Apprentice, Wiring Methods, Black, Red, White, Wire Conductors,

When wiring a panel or installing breakers, Identify wire color to Insure that when you are sharing the neutral the black is on phase 1 and red wire on phase 2. If not Color all phase 2 wires with red electrical tape.

    I want to thank you for taking the time to do these videos, I was +20 years a broadcast video tech and lately have been doing electrical work. My basic understanding of electricity is more than solid but there are many things I've had to learn for power distribution and often watch multiple (truth comes from a compilation of sources as opposed to one, sometimes not even then) and that's why how I came across your video of ground rod testing. Immediately I felt respect for your lifes work and the generosity your offering here. Thank you.

    Hi John. I have a question. I'm trying to splice together a plug (called Rosenberger Plug) to a charger (Bosch) the charger is 36 volts and 4 amps and 110v to 230v. But, when I cut the wires on each, the plug to connect to my bicycle to charge the batteries has six wires (black, green, blue, orange, brown and red). While the charger has only white, black and green. I'm wondering how I can splice the plug and charger together if the plug has 3 less wires and different colors ? P.S. Both the plugs and charger are from Germany. The charger does work with our American 110v as well as the European 230v. I appreciate your help in advance. Frank.

    Sir, thank you for pointing out the problems we need to avoid! Would you please clarify for me the phases? Circuit Breaker is phase one, wall switches phase two, and light fixtures phase three? We are reinstalling the existing ceiling light (after painting a room) and there isn't a black/hot wire showing in the Ceiling Junction Box, but there is a red wire. The wall switch for that light has both a black and a red wire. Should the Red Wire in the Ceiling Junction (which I now believe is the neutral wire) be considered as black/hot? I will be installing a fan on that light circuit in the near future. Again, I so appreciate you help and 30 years of experience!

    I want to change a ceiling light fixture that is currently working off of a drawstring. However, when I pulled the fixture down, I noticed 3 sets of black and white wires, not the usual 1 set. In each case, two blacks are connected to post, and one black to the other....as well as two whites to one post and one white to the other post. My new fixture simply has a black and white wire. How do I connect? Thanks!!

    The point of this is if you are dealing with circuits that share neutral wires, you have to ensure that you're not sending too much voltage over it. You can get away with sharing it, if you've either got them on different phases or you've used a wire that's capable of handling both voltages at the same time. As an amateur that's been driven nuts lately trying to figure out how to patch in GFCI outlets into an existing MWBC set up without having them immediately trip, being able to look at the cable and know what it's doing and which phase it's on would have been really helpful. I did eventually figure out, that I could just run line inputs to line inputs and that should be fine as it's equivalent to how it was previously wired, but that took a bit of effort just to figure out what I had going on. IMHO, the one issue that comes from color coding based upon the phase, is that if you've got more than one circuit in the same box, for example and outlet and the switch for the garbage disposal, as is common in kitchens, it can be hard to identify which circuit is which when they're deenergized.

    My house was built in 2017, I went to install a light, the Romex in the outlet had 4 wires, the copper wire, the white the red and the black wire. The light had 3 wires, the copper the white and the black. I connected the white to the white the black to the black and the copper to the copper and put a cap on the red because the light did not have any red wire. When i put the breaker back on the light came on but the switch cannot turn it off. I opened the switch and saw the red and black wires connected to the switch, the white wire is capped with a screw cap. Can I change the wiring at the light from the white on the fixture to the red in the Romex?

  • @SmallSpoonBrigade

    @SmallSpoonBrigade

    5 жыл бұрын

    @tooklongenough I'm not an electrician, but take a look at what wires are going and coming from the switch. I'd check the wires with and without the switch thrown to see which wire changes from deenergized to energized and that should be the hot that you use to activate the light. The one which is hot constantly wouldn't be used here. I have no idea what it's supposed to be used for, but it's definitely not the light unless it's activated by the switch. Also, make sure that there's only one switch that's controlling the light. It might also be the case that there's a different circuit running through the box for some reason. I had that happen in my kitchen where the electrician used the outlet box as a junction box on top of the outlet and switch. This is also why it's a good idea to record what's attached to what before you make any changes. For the most part, if it's been working, it should still work if you put it back the way it was. The way it was, should be how it was designed to be. And swapping compatible components should lead to something that still works.

    Liked your video, seems you really know what you're talking about. I have an interesting situation... perhaps you could help me, perhaps not. I'd like to move and replace an old 2 prong light in my garage about 2 ft over from where it currently is to provide me room to put a garage door opener. This will require me to extend about 4 or 5 12/2 wires. The current fixture has EIGHT 12/2 wires running into it (I think this might be too many 12/2s going into one junction box?). All 8 white wires are twisted together and covered with electrical tape. Then from the eight black wires , 7 of them are all twisted together, with one of those 7 being longer and reaching further down to attach to one of the light bulbs. Then it has 1 black wire not combined with the other black wires that attaches to the fixture as well. I'll also add the light is a very old 2 prong light... which I suppose is why it requires two black wires running to it? My questions are... how do I go about extending the 4 12/2 wires that need extending.... can I splice 4blacks -->1 (and 4 whites to 1 white) and then take that 12/2 and combine it with the other 4 12/2s or does it need to be 4 12/2s-->4 12/2s and take all 4 to the other 4. Then... how do I determine which wires to splice to the black and white coming off the new light?
