We took a look at some of the most repairable headphones in the world. These are the Fairbuds XL by fairphone and we wanted to see how it was even possible to make repairable headphones in the first place. As a repair technician I embrace and love repairable products, everybody wins when you make things repairable. In this video we not only teardown these headphones but we also do an audio test and honestly, I think you'll be shocked by the results.
Thanks fairphone for sending us these for review : Fairphone.com

It's cool and novel but idk man, I have never broken headphones like that. I chucked a pair of sony xm3 (older model of the xm4 i forgor what is called)on the concrete and all that broke was the frame. Snapped in half but the wires inside were fine and I functioned normally aside from the obvious not fitting the head. Not to say all are like that but...

This proves that companies could easily make good, consumer friendly repairable products but they choose not to
@ohnoes9608

@basicallyhuman Eh, that's not that clear cut. Fairphone can do this on this product because they intentionally went for a bulky look. If they were going for lightweight exercise gear or just slimmer looking gear having everything be easily repairable with big screws, chonky plastic and three separate PCBs wouldn't be so trivial. While these headphones are great there is still a space for more complex and "boundary pushing" stuff. IMO what sets Fairphone apart isn't the speckled plastic or big screws, but rather the amazing, consumer facing and widely advertised availability of parts and repair guides. If a company gives me the necessary parts and guides to repair my products I can tolerate the products being complex and somewhat hard to work with in the name of lightness, compactness or some other intresting design quality. The blatant obfuscation of parts availability and information is a far bigger issue, and unlike "don't design small things" it's something that's possible to regulate and do something about.

I would have thought that the cable would have been something proprietary but still modular or at the very least a micro headphone jack cable I think they're called 2.5 mm regular headphones use 3.5 mm if I remember correctly and then I think there's a quarter inch jack that you see guitarists using.

I'm more impressed with how easy it is to replace the headband. from my experience, it's one of the weakest points in a headphone. other manufacturers require you to be very careful and remove several screws, but not this one. the replaceable battery is nice as well!

@professorflaw3389 The Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro headband costs 10 Euro, too. I think 20 is managebale, especially since I had to replace mine exactly once in 10 years. I don't think you will be buying the bands and cables every couple weeks or even months.

@@idiotically-everything Okay, I gotta admit that I use mine indoor only so I have no idea how the Beyerdynamics behave in such situations, but the headband is made of imitation leather so I guess it wouldn't be a problem. Although, to be fair, if you wear them outside, you might replace your headband more often than once in 10 years even with the DT770 Pros since the fake leather still cracks and flakes off in those cracks over time - mostly due to the fact that the headband has to compress constantly if your head isn't large enough for the max. size setting.

Nah! Nigga
We can theoretically design our own custom 3D printable headbands just by having the cups removable and replaceable, that in itself is INSANE.
This is also a great way to teach kids how technology works first hand. I remember back in the day taking not so repairable electronics apart as a kid, and couldn't put it back together. With a little help you could learn how your phone works for example and hopefully figure out how it goes back together or ask someone :)
Thats actually a pretty smart idea
This is so awesome! A lot of wireless earphones end up as e-waste because the batteries which naturally degrade overtime aren’t user replaceable(or even replaceable at all). Thanks Fairbuds!
Definitely, the last few headphones that I had always broke because of the cable the connects both sides, ending with only 1 side working. So being able to replace the cable (though this one looks more durable) with all the other replace components, makes this a win for me. Hope they end up selling this in the US if they succeed with the fairphone.

I absolutely love what fairphone is doing, and while their phones are not for me, these headphones sound like excellent replacements for my soundcore q30 headphones that I currently have.
I am starting to become a fan of the Fairphone and Fairbuds. But unfortunately it's expensive on my area.
Great video! I kind of wish you would do an audio test before and after the tear down and reasembly. In my experience with tinkering with things, speakers don't alway sound the same after opening them up. I'm sure these would since they are made too, but the ones that are not made to be opened up and require prying often don't.
I am being so serious when i say this, my jaw literally DROPPED when i saw a removable battery in a pair of headphones. made my week so much better 😭
Now this is some serious competition
Love the idea, I wonder what the sound quality is like , I would want to try a pair before I bought them
The replacable batery was one major incentive for me to buy Bang & Olufsen H9i 4 years back. Still holding very well
Im going to buy them as soon as I can. I love having the option to repair stuff. Apple needs to be more like them
They do look nice but are a bit pricey compared to other premium headphones. It's great to see total reparability on a product however there are other headphones with removable batteries too. Not sure about the sound demo but if the sound quality can match the premium headphones then they are a sure win. Plus the total reparability opens up an avenue of opportunities.

@professorflaw3389 that's weird, my old headphone is 3+ years old and it's battery life is still absolutely amazing. I charged it 2 days ago and it's still at 90, with a usage of, I'd say 4-5 hours, and connected a lot more than that

@professorflaw3389 well, even i found what I said after a while harder to believe. But i charged my headphones to hundred(almost, it wasn't full), and I started to time how much I used them and how much the battery levels were At start, it showed 90%, cause it wasn't full like i said(so somewhere bw 90-100), and after 2 and a half hours on my laptop and another three on my phone they now show 70%(70-80), after I connected them this morning. So that's about 20% in 5:30 minutes. I call that amazing for three year old headphones tbh. The model is boat rockerz 510, and they're extremely cheap headphones.

For wireless headphones, sound quality, ANC, and mic quality are prioritised. These don't come close to the Sony XM5s or the Bose QC 45s, but it's nice to see them excel in repairability.
This is why I love my beyerdynamic dt900 pro x! They're wired so they dont have a removable battery, but everything else is user replacable, and beyerdynamic sells all the spare parts for reasonable prices!
Every device must be engineered as those headphones, as much as possible. Standard easy replaceable connectors, removable batteries, easy replaceable boards and components, SCREWS ONLY, NO GLUE etc....

Hey, can you please make a video of what happens when your AirPods touch water and what you are supposed to do? Thank you!
Very loving this concept, wish them success
You should use a reference headphone when trialing which would set a baseline to compare. Refreshing to see a different approach in headphones, I would be sold if they can make an external charger for the batteries
If there is a charging station for the battery and the sound is good, I know what I’m gonna buy when my head phones break.
Apple employee watching the video be like: We can but we won't 😂
This opens huge opportunity for customization, I have the same feeling for the sound quality though, it's like the in-ear of Skullcandy buds, passable, but not HiFi
I would LOVE it if my Bose QC 35 ii headphones had a battery that was that easy to replace! Got them on sale a couple years ago and still absolutely loving them, but even though they work perfectly right now I know eventually they’ll need a new battery - which I can’t replace. Hope to see this feature in more headphones soon!
The only things this is truly missing is that it doesn't have a way to use them wired and it doesn't have an easy way to charge them. On that second point I have a pair of wireless but not Bluetooth headphones that have like a base station and you just set the headphones on the base station and they start charging. The batteries are also removable and you can buy them at any retail store Just look for the ones with AAA on them.
For how easy to repair and the price it sounds really good would buy it if i had the money😅

Parrot headphones had this removable batteries years ago. Many cheap headphones also have batteries that you can easily desolder and open the earcup with screws.

Fairbuds look really cool in both senses
For audio comparison could you get a pair of hd 600, they are quite well known and make it much easier to compare, alternatively a pair of HD 58X would also do the job well

love the repairability. but replaceable battery is more of a concern for tws since they degrade faster due to smaller size and more charge cycles. perhaps a fair-tws in the future
