Lest be honest though the newest phones do far beyond what anyone needs. Unless your playing resident evil and capturing in their upgraded 4k, you can literally buy an iPhone 13 and get the exact same thing, if you want to do film buy a camera you can get more settings for less if you want to play high end games get an xbox or pc. As a phone every day product their is no need for there newer phones so all the complaints are meaningless to the average person. Oh i can customise my app icons, who cares.

To be fair, I think lens lock being off for default is more useful for most people. Having the option to get the better quality zooms and wide angle at all mid filming is worth the small conk or lack of stabilisation on ultra wide, as most people aren't changing their zoom between as often as a cinematographer. This is especially true since the colours and light performance between the cameras has narrowed to the point where the transition is otherwise visually seamless.

The opening actually touches on a realisation i had recently: there are almost no mid-tier products left If you want a camera its either some crap for ten bucks that barely functions, or its an incredibly complex machine that you need to learn and master. Same with media players, its either knock of nuggets, or some high end stuff you really invest in. Like, i dont mind spending some money on something i love, but i have many hobbies, and nowadays everything just seems to call out "you gotta pick one and stick to it, if youre not willing to drop 300 dollars on this, you dont like the hobby enough, and you should buy landfill that will break in less than a year like the rest of the plebs" Like no my guy, i jus want _decent_ stuff. It doesnt have to be hand crafted by tibettan monks doing a handstand, i just want a propper, decent start to a hobby to try it out

I fully agree! As someone who uses android (currently on the s23 ultra for that gorgeous camera), and who has always had a hatred of Apple (as a company), I can't help but admire when I find people who aren't fanboys of Apple, and who use it because of all of its wonderful features... not just because it's Apple. Apple has so many fantastic products, that most other companies struggle to match or replicate. It's just that they keep everything so locked down and unusable beyond basic things, and the whole status symbol its made for itself, makes it such an off putting thing for me.

@@thomasschaufler987I’d much rather use a product that works 98% of the time than a product that works only 60% of the time which is why I stick with Apple. Apple isn’t about “being the first” anymore as they have been for a long time, but rather making something that works. Yes this video pointed out things that “didn’t work” but it’s 1% of the phone amongst other things. These are software fixes and Apple even focuses on supporting even the oldest of their devices which android doesn’t do. My note 5 is literally useless because of software and iPhones in that time frame are still supported. Yes SOME things are still “locked down” but for the good reason of letting things work on the phone and updates come to everyone at the same time letting everyone enjoy new software/hardware features at the same time. It’s about quality now. Not being first.

9:12 The auto-stabilization is accomplished by digitally cropping in on the shot so you don’t see the edges moving. That obviously doesn’t work when you’re zoomed all the way out to 0.5. The actual camera sensor moves enough to compensate for a bit of wobbling, but if it starts shaking a lot the software starts cropping, hence the need to zoom back in. Hope that makes sense.

  • @TheDiner50

it is not just done in software. The main camera on modern phones got stabilization in the camera also. It is that AND the cropping to stay stable that makes a thing in your hand able to be that stable. At least that is what I understand of the modern camera tech.

IIRC in video mode the footage is always cropped a slight bit to account for Electronic Image Stabilization, on my SE switching to the video mode crops into the footage quite a bit. They're using EIS in combination with OIS for extra stabilization, the difference is that the 0.5x lens on the iPhone has no OIS, so you see all the motion blur from your shaky hands being smoothened out by EIS when zoomed out far. When you zoom into the 1x lens that does have OIS, the sensor physically moves, cancelling out the motion blur from hand movement and you get clean footage (unless you move the camera quicker than the OIS can compensate, like for panning or very violent shaking).

10:30 I’m pretty sure it uses the mic on the back the phone (near the LiDAR Scanner, there’s a little hole, that’s a mic) for video

I noticed the kick over on the 14 Pro Max too! I thought my phone was just faulty or something, but I’m glad it’s not just mine.

No, it's because your phone has 3 cameras on the back.

For me the stereo sound record works best in concert settings where it perfectly captures the artist.

If I had to guess .5x isnt stabilised because otherwise you’d start getting occasional vignette from seeing the edge of the lens, I know when I use a fisheye on my camcorder I have to turn off OSS for that reason. Not that a wide needs much stabilisation tbh

I got a 13 Pro, not Max, specifically for the camera. The wide-angle lens nearly blew my mind and has fully replaced my old standalone camera with a proper wide-angle. I'm going to be using that sucker for as long as possible, because the changes between phones are too incremental to go year-to-year.

I love how dankpods makes his reviews because he does and show stuff that is genuinely practical or something we would actually do in our day to say life's n stuff. All in a funny aussie package.
