Today i get my Ultra 2. The last 30 Years i always had a Casio. A new Era is beginning now for me. Thanks for your video helping my to decide to take it. I am complete trapped now in the apple universe. It started with an Ipad, then an Iphone, then an Iphone for my wife, then 2 for the Kids, after that an apple watch SE for my wife, to round it up apple one for the family and on top now the Ultra 2 for me. The one BIG reason to upgrade (for me anyways as I’m older) is the size of the screen. As you get older and your start to need reading glasses the size of the fonts become a big factor. No point getting a series 9 Apple Watch if you can’t read it . But a great reason for the Ultra 2 😊

Great video and commentary! I recently returned from a trip to the ocean where I took my AW Series 6 swimming and it fell off while I was jumping into the ocean from the boat. It fell 22' to the floor of the ocean where we were snorkeling and stayed there for more than 30m before being retrieved by one of the boat crew. It's amazing what they can withstand. Experiencing that took away one of the reasons I was looking at the AWU2, but this video really hit home why it was a good model to look at again.

Oh and backpacking, I predownloaded the map area I would be in, and used workoutdoors app, and it stopped tracking me not long after losing cell service, in some old growth forest. Content great as always but that cinematography is just off the charts. How did you freaking break up the digital watch face of the AWU and dive into it in the beginning?! And the macro shots? Forget about it. This is really a great video because it highlights some of the nuances of the version two over the original, plus really does highlight the durability factor, which is a big plus as a simple solution for anyone wanting an Apple Watch. Awesome work.

Don’t feel like charging? Epix. Lazy and don’t want to carry my phone? Ultra. Peloton ride? Either or. Outdoor run? Both…one for metrics, one for streaming music/audio books. When you are doing something important example jogging, lifting weights or on marathon you get the important call, text, Amazon package delivery etc the quick instant reply The certain s you can do on the watch can be lifesaver. Hi Matt, Firstly, happy 2024, and thanks for your videos. I am also a triathlete and I have the Apple Watch ultra 1. (also the Forerunner 955) and I have tried to give the AWU a try a lot of times, but I always end up going back to the Garmin. For training, I can't find a way for AWU to help me. My coach posts my workouts on TP and with Garmin I don't have to do anything, it automatically syncs what I have to do in the native app, and I'm ready to train! With AWU, there is no way. I have to juggle with 3rd party apps (follow a planned swimming workout, it's a nightmare). When Apple announced the integration with TP, I was very happy, but when it comes down to it, it's the most absurd integration I've ever seen. Honestly… Do you use the AWU for real training? Thank you,

100% honesty here in all my videos. I am almost always training with two watches on. It's frequently a Garmin of some sort that I'm testing and an AWU. I typically start both when swimming, biking or running. Then I'll compare data. I'm surprised the workouts aren't coming across to your AWU from Training Peaks. That stuff is brand new but I didn't have any issues doing workouts when I tested it. Still, I think it's really good for people to read other people's opinions on all of these watches. Bluetooth only is a no go for now since it only allows the power meter to pair with the tablet or the Watch but not both at the same time. 2nd is the buttons. I need to be able to navigate the entire Watch with the buttons on occasion. 3. Is battery life. Garmin, Suunto , coros and polar prioritize battery life over much of everything else. This problem is particularly concerning given the watch's marketing as a durable device for intensive outdoor activities. • @mlegrand

The AWU 2 is designed for more extreme environments and has a water resistance rating of up to 100 meters. This makes it suitable for recreational scuba diving to depths of up to 40 meters and other high-velocity water sports like waterskiing and surfing. Additionally, the Ultra 2 is certified to the EN13319 standard, which is a diving accessory standard used by professional divers. The AWS9 has a water resistance rating of up to 50 meters under the ISO standard 22810:2010. This means it is appropriate for shallow-water activities such as swimming in a pool or ocean. However, it is not recommended for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water or deeper submersion.

Garmin is the only GPS watch worth having nowadays. I got an Apple Watch Ultra 2 three months ago, after having all Garmin Fenix since the 5. After trying my best to like the AWU2, I sold it yesterday and got an Epix Pro 2 Sapphire. Once you have a flagship Garmin, it's impossible to forget it. Apple did a great job with smart features, mainly on the cellular connection. But they are decades behind Garmin regarding what to do with all the data collected. People used to say AWU2 is a smartwatch and Garmin is a sports watch, but I totally disagree. The way Apple deals with data is not smart AT ALL. So, if I don't have a Garmin, I prefer to use an analog watch than wear any other 'smartwatch' on the market.

I have experienced a very similar conclusion. After purchasing an AW Ultra 1 in 2022, upgrading to AW Ultra 2 in 2023, I just purchased a Garmin Epix Gen. 2 Pro 47mm, and love it! As a swimmer, I was frustrated with lack of ability to create custom workout displays to track swim laps, interval times, and other metrics while in the pool. The text size on the AW Ultra is too small for swimmers. In contrast, Garmin offers many custom workout views for swim and other workouts that Apple does not offer. Furthermore, I carry an iPhone everywhere, and find the AW Ultra apps duplicate almost all of my iPhone apps. The other issue with Apple is poor health metrics. Data is not analyzed by Apple, and dependent of app software developers. I have purchased hundreds of dollars in AW Ultra apps, and discovered that I still need to dig deep and interpret the data that I need. Garmin, on the other hand, provides very clear analysis of data and useful metrics, all baked into the Garmin Connect app.

Yes, times are changing... but I've given up on "smart" watches. I've tried apple watches (SE, SE 2), tried Amazfit (for work) and Garmin Instinct Solar. They're all ok, they all have their pluses and minuses... but in the end, ALL these "smart" watches are made to become obsolete. They're great for 2-3 years, and then time to upgrade. Just like smart phones. Instead I returned my last smart watch and got myself a Casio ProTrek to replace my daily work watch. It has a compass, barometer, altimeter, temperature, sunrise/sunset function, not to mention multiband 6 for auto syncing (or you can turn that off if you want) and most important Tough Solar. No need for chargers, no need for anything, and with 200m water resistance, this is a completely worry free watch. And what makes it hilarious with these smart watches is the price that they charge for them for something that needs to be charged daily, or every 2 days in case the Ultra model. So no more smart watches for me. Never again.

I'd love to review some Casio watches here on this channel. It'd be great to learn more about what they have to offer. Smart watches are cool but these things are pretty whimpy when it comes to battery life. I also have a Garmin Enduro 2 that last about 2 months which is fantastic. @@Mike-hu8yz Why? Because I'm a techie guy. I follow many youtubers who review tech, but I also follow many youtubers who review regular mechanical/solar power watches that are not smart watches. It's interesting to see what people say about them and I like to give my opinion as I've used many smart watches and always have my smart phone on me. And like I said, this is what I chose to do, it doesnt' mean that's what you would do. So, that's why.

Never again? lol, you will get another, eventually. Do you have a smartphone? I thought so, but 30 years ago when the phone can pretty much only do calls, is it really necessary to have one? Who knew back then that a mobile phone can do as many stuff as it can today? So, there will be a time when the smartwatch will come with functions that you will say to yourself “I just gotta have one.”

Hey great review, I want to say in my experience the apple watch ultra 1 or 2 is not that durable, I don't think they use a high grade titanium, I barely touched it against my wooden door frame and it left a scratch 😂, it banged against my wedding ring ever so lightly and it left a dent. I really don't know what to make of the apple watch ultra when it comes durability, luckily my OCD isn't in this field 😂

i wish you could listen to music without the ear buds as its built in speaker is good enough for dog walks , my last apple watch was the watch 5 , watches are never yearly , with apple watches not as they look the same as gen 1 only faster and the bezzel is smaller now , for most normal people every 6 or so years upgrading , but if it still works and is scratch free there is no real plus in buying every year its a waist of money and stupid

Apple is struggling with sales because apple products last that well and are supported so well and the quality of the products is so good that people don’t feel the need to upgrade, there is no new big thing to drive that temptation anymore, unless it’s Apple artificial intelligence that’s due this year but I feel there are late to the game and other companies have the upper hand now and the control.

My frustrations with the Apple watch 2 which costs almost twice, if not triple, as much as a Samsung watch: can't change the volume in Airpods on the watch, can't hear workout feedback while listening to music on Airpods, can't have the sleep function turned on without Sleep focus, no blood pressure option, oxygen sensor is in dispute, in the Health app where the watch sends data you have tons of useful information only on first read but can't hide once you've read it, two Health and Fitness apps where Samsung only has one. On my old 2021 Samsung 4 watch, I had more useful functions than Apple ultra 2, well... thanks Apple 😂
