Apple's Tim Cook: Indonesia Is a Great Place to Invest

"The investment ability in Indonesia in endless," Apple CEO Tim Cook told reporters during his visit to the country. The iPhone maker is weighing production in the Southeast Asian nation, as the company explores manufacturing bases outside of its longtime stronghold of China to minimize geopolitical risks.

Tim’s answers are too diplomatic. It really looks like they just came here to lobby the government so that Apple products can continue to enter Indonesia even though they don't “techinically” fulfill the TKDN requirements. Building the Apple Developer Academy is good and all, but cannot really be considered as a serious investment on Apple’s part. They wouldn’t have bothered if they weren’t forced to in the first place to make the government happy. On the other hand, opening a factory/Apple Store can open up lots of job opportunities and show their commitment to the Indonesian market. Very disappointing to see Apple’s impression of Indonesia after so many years remain largely the same.

US government cannot push their private companies or make them invest in other countries, what actually happened is private interest usually supported by US government, private companies need to have mutual benefits with the US government, they are not state companies like china where the government is the decision maker. For example us-china trade wars, US gov wants private companies in china to move their factory from china to to other country, but instead tesla invested 2nd factory in china in 2023 because pivate company knew that china has those capability to make their products cheaper

Freeport-McMoran also did not build a smelter and all the concentrate mined was shipped directly to the US. Indonesian people are very proud and happy to live in Indonesia, and do not want to leave Indonesia. On the other hand, many Americans want to leave America because the cost of living there is very expensive, while security guarantees are very low. Who would be interested in living in a country where you could occasionally become a victim of a mass shooting?
