Apple Intelligence NOT Coming to the iPhone 15! Is Apple FAILING to Support Current iPhones?

TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy Apple fans on Threads are CORRECT! Apple not bringing LLM features to current iPhones and iPads is NOT an indication that Apple is failing to support their products! So why did we think this was a problem when Google did something similar with Gemini?

Actually it wasn't even a bait. It is simply true that 8 month old devices are not supported as far as this most important feature set is concerned. This is a fact, no matter what the reason for it is ... they are simply not supported. I love the 24 GB RAM example of OnePlus.❤ Another aspect: Apple and the sheeps repeat that Apple has been working on AI features for years, and that they are not following others such as Samsung. But this leaves us with two options only: either Apple is lying (which is the actual option), or Apple did equip the devices with less memory intentionally to milk their buyers even more (which would be even the worse option).

It's like folks need to believe that Apple just came up with this AI idea in the last six months, and they aren't working a timeline 2-3 years out. But also, the DOJ case against Apple DIRECTLY references Apple executive messages about how they're deliberately trying to slow improvements on their products. Gotta force those trade in deals somehow...

Server based LLM could be done all all phones, I am running self signed server based LLM on my own server with 13 pro max, Siri opens it via a shortcut, I called it smart Siri, she is obnoxious smart and rude, Apple just doesnt want to pay server fees, this is another cost saving move.

Man, I missed that. I don't know why I got into Threads this week. I would've been laughing a lot. I can't thank you enough for giving me a big reason why I'm not as crazy about getting the 24GB version of the OnePlus 12. Every friend asks me "Why do need that much RAM in a phone?" when the phone does the cool things it does without needing a server. And if it had a desktop mode? Bye, laptop.

Definitely agree that there is massive double standards in the tech press. And ironically Google is rolling out Gemini to everyone at the same time that Apple is limiting it to select devices. Is it a RAM issue or genuinely the fact that the current chips don’t have the necessary LLM cores required? Or both. Either way they could give everyone OpenAI at least. But I think they’ll take it slow instead because it’s a privacy minefield.

  • @SomeGadgetGuy

As far as I can tell, unpacking a model like Gemini on ONLY 8GB of RAM can cause issues supporting the OS and UI. Someone more knowledgeable than I will have to confirm that, but I don't believe there are significant NPU differences between the 8 and 8 Pro.

When you are concerned about privacy, you shouldn't use OpenAI in the cloud, period. Apple is just talking BS about protecting your privacy. Did you know that those "suggestions" in the App Store, are probably mostly personalised adds? And a company pretending to protect your privacy, should never analyse your pictures or sell personalised adds.

@@LivingLinuxthank you for sharing this. I've been thinking, if they have an LLM, either they bought it from Facebook or OpenAI or whatever, or they trained it on their own dataset. I've said it to you before, and I'll likely say it again. Apple users are not "tech users". If anything, they represent the antithesis of tech in many ways. When talking about them the word "tech" shouldn't even be used in the same discussion.

Not a great argument. I will hand it to you that when most of my family have problems with their iPhones, they come to me even though I primarily use android, but they reason why they came to be is because I am the tech guy in the family and they have a tech problem. What you are saying is akin to saying people who eat McDonald's and love McDonald's are not "food" people, they are definitely eating food, aren't they? I'm so tired of gate keepers making it a us versus them thing. Who cares if I use a galaxy s24 ultra and my mom uses a older iPhone 12 pro max. It's all tech that's helping us with our daily tasks. It's like you think these devices are fundamentally different. They are now just mediums for us connecting to the applications we use. So sick and tired of this mentality.

You don't need an NPU for AI, but you do need it to run AI tasks fast, within a limited power budget. I mean, you can generate images with Stable Diffusion XL (without being limited to certain styles) on something as limited as a Raspberry Pi Zero 2. You just need to wait several hours. When memory is limited, use smaller LLMs. The answers will also be shorter, but I have seen them run on 4GB devices.

Honestly, from using Androids with NPUs since the early Huawei experiments, there's a LOT of cool stuff we can do with that compute power. For the heavier models though, the issue is always going to be RAM. I think the 15Pro will be "good", but if we get a RAM bump in the 16Pro, we'll know Apple is turning the screws on planned obsolescence. If the 16Pro has the same amount of RAM, then I think we can believe they really are crafting an experience with longer expectations of support. We did NOT get that kind of longer term consideration from Google on the Pixel 8, or Samsung.

Google did create tensor chips claiming better support and features to bepassed down. But ive seen over time that even simplest features like pro mode when they introduced it, were not given to older and non pro models which makes no sense. Ofc they took a lot of time to introduce such a simple feature available in almost any other android phone camera. But when they had it out they had to limit it like that ? Made no sense. Its not just about this. Google has been software locking features a lot more these days. Other companies do that too. Ram is certainty an important hardware aspect that should be noted when speaking about, and this part is key, "on device llms." Many operations Google currently offers are not completely "on device". This is why in order to operate features such as Magic Editor, you have to have an internet connection. Hell, you can't even use Gemini without an internet connection. So if Apple is being honest with Apple Intelligence and most of their operations will function directly on device without needing cloud service, then yes, ram is a more important aspect. Just throwing this out there, leaks have suggested that Google is touting 16gb of ram in their next Pixel devices. So hopefully as Google Gemini continues to mature we'll see a Gemini Nano being more on device capable and not just relying on cloud based architecture.

Well, a bit more structural differences going from Tensor 2 to 3, but it's still kind of annoying that Google sold us on the idea of their own chip "doing AI" (they literally called it a TENSOR), but they fell behind MediaTek and Qualcomm NPU performance pretty fast...

That's the BIG win for competition. MediaTek in two generations pretty much caught Qualcomm's premium tier. That's incredible.

It will be interesting to see what gets offered to what and if it will be just locked to brands etc. Hopefully not. Edge 30 Ultra over a year old (Snap 8+ Gen 1 , 12GB)but benchmarks are similar to mates Pixel 8 Pro

Same with my Xiaomi 12S ultra. It performs similarly AND has better camera hardware than the Pixel 8Pro. If the rumors on the 9Pro are true, then Google will still be struggling to out pace an almost three year old Xiaomi.

Apple enthusiasts exhibit bias when evaluating AI performance. They strongly resist criticism of Apple's AI implementation, especially when contrasted with Google's. This results in a chorus of Apple loyalists, including tech reviewers on KZread, defending their chosen brand. Your review, which questioned Apple's AI prowess, seems to have sparked a change in their thinking. When Apple's AI is compared to Google's, they suddenly become enamored about Google's capabilities, praising it as the superior solution.

This is much like Microsoft lurking on your AI computer, doing stuff on machine and if need be using OpenAI. But when Apple does it's less creepy because they've already manipulated and restricted the life out of you it's "innovation" 🤣🤦‍♂️

Iphones need more ram? I screamed that when I purchased the iPhone 4s with a mere 512k back in 2011; imagine that, 512k. However, I now use an *Old s21 Ultra /w 12gb of ram....and, its not getting the *Special AI features. Ah well. If it was important to me, and if I wanted to just toss some cash into the ether, I'd go find a good inexpensive refurb s23 ultra on ebay.
