The additional fact that there was the issue with the SSD's that are being presented, it made me go the direction of the Pro. @madan pal the 256k and 4K random reads and writes are about the same if not faster in the m2 air so for most users they will never notice the performance difference or have a better experience even on the 256gb air. Also, hardly any users spring for a TB3 nvme pcie SSD external drive. They are either using an HDD or at best a USB3.1 Gen 2 SSD that maxes out around 1GBps. So they will never have an occasion to utilize this speeds pretty much. File copies to the same drive are instantaneous now with the APFS filesystem.

$1500 is without sales tax, which you always need to add for US prices unless you live kn a state without them like Delaware. So the Apple “tax“ in Europe is not as bad as you think it is, especially since e.g. in Germany there are also more bullshit taxes like GEMA which actually charge you for any sold phone, tablet and computer to accompany for “private copies of music“. The US cost would be $1,594 (with avg US sales tax of 6.35%) vs $2,201( Germany with 1€=$1). Difference of $607 (32% more expensive). Or is the 1850€ on the website already including sales tax? i mean what do you expect, its apple. the vast majority of their fanbase are idiots who are completely fine with their nuclear toaster thermal throating at 30% performance for that cool apple look. and then spend a few more hundred dollars on stupid accessories. i mean everyone does that, but apple fandies are worse because, well their shit is marked up even more so than the competition.

Little correction the new M2 MB Air and Pro do have Thunderbolt 3 / USB 4 Ports NOT Thunderbolt 4. These come only with the 14"/16" MB Pro

I ended up just getting 14in MB pro. I got it for 1850 with apple education pricing as well as a 150 dollar gift card. It just makes more sense, the air needs to be upgraded in order for it to be worth it, but at that point you’re only a few hundred dollars away from getting a much better screen, more ports, dual external monitors, and more. Love the new color on the air though.

Also better speakers! 14” M1 Pro is slightly slower on single core, but slightly quicker on multi-core - so that aspect balances out.

I honestly do not like anything Apple does, but I'm half considering getting an M2 Air and running ASAHI Linux on it (avoids the *awful* non-standard keyboard layout and their walled garden)

The pro exists for sustained workloads and also if you only have that laptop available for any PC gaiming (however limited that may be). So, yeah. There IS a market for it. But atm, the other M1 pro options are better, I believe.
