It’s a good essay-though he cites his primary sources badly; half of the sources cited are Wikipedia articles-and the video production is tasteful, but I’m concerned with how poor attribution of other people’s work and footage is. None of the B-roll appears to be his, none of photographs used for illustration, extraneous footage, et cetera, and while it does seem to be fair-use more often than not (I don’t think all of it is), it seems disrespectful to the original artists to not credit them anywhere. The photographs of Vitsoe’s headquarters are beautiful. I don’t think he took them; which is okay, they were fairly used. But I’ll have to reverse image search screenshots of them to find the originals and their artist now, when Hu could’ve done better, respected a fellow artist, and included an attribution under those frames. If he did take them, say “self-work”. I don’t mind one book about Jony Ive and a few Wikipedia articles regurgitated back to me in a pretty video, but I especially take issue with the lack of attribution to other people’s work. Doesn’t set good precedent coming from another creator.

I’ve always missed skeuomorphic icons and design because I only got the chances to see it when I was younger. Seeing Mac OS Big Sur change the mac icons again gave me a sense of nostalgia with the little shade and the little details on a small icon that were like on previous version of iOS and Mac OS X.

This was an informative two-parter. Now I actually understand what skeuomorphism, the “flat” look, and neumorphism are. Personally I am a fan of interactive objects being at least somewhat 3D, as it kinda signals to the brain “hey, you can touch me” whereas if everything is flat the whole screen just runs together like a work by Picasso. However, I also agree that the smaller an object becomes and/or the greater number of objects are on screen, the less detailed they should be. It’s like a rock band vs a classical orchestra. With fewer instruments, you allow and arguably even rely on each one to add a very unique set of sounds to the end music. However, in a full-on orchestra, you need less individual uniqueness so the whole comes together as a strong unified acoustic force.

This mini series is amazingly well made! I'm very happy this was pushed to me by the algorithm. Keep making more like this and I'm sure you will gain a much bigger following. Also, even though Apple has been the trend setter it would be really interesting if you would expand the view and explain more broad global visual design trends. The ending with shaded icons and AR feels like such a tease for Part 3: Looking into the crystal ball.

I really enjoyed this 2 part series! Apple design history is something I’ve always been interested in. I used to spend hours drawing icons for fun in Mac OS7. The canvas was 32 pixels square and your colors were limited to 256. It teaches one a lot about doing more with less. It’s hard to explain the excitement of Mac OS X arriving with drop shadows and eye candy. We were drunk on skeuomorphism for a while. I feel that the best place is somewhere in between. Thanks again.

Catching some deep feelings on this video... dude. I watch Objectified multiple times per year. It's my absolute favourite documentary. Ives at is peak definitely warranted reverence from Dieter Rams... But he DESTROYED the usability of iOS for me... stripping it of rich affordance and meaning. Before iOS 7, you could hand an iPad to anyone, of almost any age, and they could intuit how to use it. Now, 6+ years after iOS7, I'm still baffled by the abject lack of clarity and obfuscation of the UI in iOS. Great video!

Not to sound like a dick, but hearing about Ive, i'm honestly glad to see him gone. Feels like he has been holding the company back design wise, which has been holding the entire industry back as a whole

@Fifty Dinar Nailed it. Skeuomorphism is absolutely beautiful. I loved the glossy look of the icons in iOS 6 and the transparent glass in Windows 7 was top notch. If there was a button I could press to revert all graphic design to skeuomorphism, I would press it in a heartbeat. Isomorphism is the result of bad leadership at apple and a bunch of lazy graphic designers.
