I was hoping for a little more demonstration on how to text and make phone calls with Apple Car Play. You assume I know how to talk to Siri and push a certain button; I don't. I use CarPlay but have had inconsistent results with phone calls and have only read text messages. Can you be more detailed about how these features work? And, yes, I would appreciate a video on how to enhance my use of Car Play. Oh! I find when the phone rings only me, the rider, can hear to call. My passenger cannot. Is there a way to fix that so we can both talk on the phone? Or, can I hook it up so she gets the calls and I don't? -Doug

Just curious how the Apple Maps navigation works when you don’t have cell service? What other choices do you have? On my Can Am Spyder, I can connect headset plug in phone in any order and it works. I don’t have to have the BRP Connect working to make/receive calls. Texting and Siri are not available. Thx.

I've never had a CarPlay issue on my 2021 Tour. I turn on my Sena 20s first, Gold Wing on second, when dash shows connected, I plug in my phone. Also, when using my iPhone on the GW, I turn off the phone's bluetooth so that my Sena is connecting to the bike ONLY. Also make sure you don't have any accessory wiring running near the Bluetooth antenna. It doesn't take much metal around that antenna to distort the signal.

Hi Chris, Another great Moto Vlog. I'm not a big fan of Bluetooth motorcycle headsets myself, but know a lot of riders who love them, but all the issues I hear and read some riders say made me decide to have all my communications done through the wired connections of what the stock Gold Wing has. Don't get me wrong I use bluetooth through my Garmin 595 GPS and it's connected through my Galaxy S8 phone to send and receive phone calls, but thats only because in my line of work we are expected to go on call after hours to help our customers with problems. So being able to answer calls and talk to our customers while riding made life much easier and more enjoyable. Let's face it being on call and it's sunny, I don't want to not go riding just cause I'm on call. My set up was first done on my 1998 GL1500 and later transferred to my 2013 GL1800 Level IV. Thank goodness for Kennedy Cellset and their help in making my connection work via the stock Gold Wing communications and music system. Anyways nice talking to you and ride safe.

Hi Chris, I have the Sena 10c evo and most of the time it connects with the bike, however I’ve never been able to answer or make calls. If I have the iPhone connected to the bike via Bluetooth the sena really hates to connect to the bike. I’ve just about given up on getting calls while I’m riding.... maybe that’s not a bad thing while just out for a pleasure ride, but if I’m expecting a call it would be nice for business.

I recently connected my cardo and I phone to my 2019 goldwing. Every time my wife or I use the direct connect from cardo to cardo to communicate, I lose sound ( music or directions) from my I phone through the apple car play. I have to cycle power on the cardo to get my sound back. Display shows I’m connected, I can see my lcd display is playing my songs from my I phone, but no sound is coming out of my cardo speakers.

When I connect my 5S and select CarPlay…the screen is so garbled you can’t make anything out on the screen. Have you ever seen this? I tried 3 cables and even bought new to make sure it wasn’t the cable. Just got my Goldwing. I love it but this CarPlay is eeeesh and don’t want to take a brand new bike in to the shop. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Any tips or easy fixes? (Fingers crossed this is something simple).

Hello Chris, thanks for the info. I am a new owner of a brand new 2019 Goldwing. I have the Sena 20 Evo and it was defiantly a learning curve to get everything to work but I finally think I have it down. I turn off the Bluetooth on my phone. plug the phone in, I turn on the Sena and then start the bike. This usually works 99% of the time for me and I'm always able to make and receive calls as well as hear and send messages. As far as the Trunk, I would not pay to upgrade the trunk. I actually prefer the smaller profile of the trunk and as far as room goes I really don't see it being a disadvantage for me and my purpose at this time. I have a full-face Modular Bell SRT in a size large and my trunk will close with no issues. If I ride with a partner the trunk probably wouldn't be used for helmet purposes anyway.

I have Android Auto and it hooks up every time if I plug the phone in before I start the bike and turn my Sena SMH-10 Headsets on before I start the bike. Android Auto works pretty well. I'm able to use all the appropriate apps and "talk" to the bike when I need to. I know my SMH-10 headsets are not the highest quality and the microphone seems to have trouble picking up my voice sometimes. Could be wind noise too. But, for the most part, it works as advertised. In answer to the trunk question, I would NOT change the trunk on my 2019 Tour with the larger trunk. I would like to be able to get my helmet in the trunk but it's not worth spending that kind of money nor would I trade for a 2021. I'm just now getting my 2019 accessorized like I like it. I do not want to start over.

Hi Chris , after watching your video on CarPlay connection, i really have to comment on this . I have a Honda Goldwing 2021 DCT Bagger , SRL2 Sena headset and Carlink 5 /2 Air and this will not connect, I have followed your video to the letter and , even though the bike said it’s connected there is no sound through my headset , I have switched it on /off , disconnected re -paired everything and still nothing , coming from BMW where I’ve been driving a K1600 and had 2 x GSA 1250 and had no problem with these , I am slightly disappointed with this system

I have had that problem but I found the solution. When you originally paired your phone to your Sena you use the phone pairing procedure. When pairing your Goldwing to the Sena you MUST pair it in the second phone pairing position only. Look up "2nd Phone pairing" and follow instructions. Before you turn on your Goldwing turn off Bluetooth on your phone. This is the MOST important step and the reason why you are having problems with connection. If you are using Apple CarPlay all audio will be coming from the phone (plugged in) to the Goldwing and then from the Goldwing via Bluetooth to the Sena. If you do not turn off the phone bluetooth (which is not needed) your Sena is trying to pair with the bike and the phone at the same time. That doesn't work out because they fight with each other. Step One - Turn Bluetooth off on your phone. Step Two - turn the bike on acc or start it. >Audio Source >FM. Then turn on your Sena. It will take a few seconds then the Headset with the 1 will be displayed Step Three - When you hear the FM on your Sena THEN plug in your phone. If you follow that order it works every time.

I have the Sena Impulse helmet with the bluetooth integrated. I believe you have the same helmet. Mine is doing the same thing. Sometimes I have to connect it, turn it off, and then back on for a successful connection. So when you first turn on the Sena you hear 2 beeps, receive the notification "connected" and see the headset connection notification in the dash. However, there is not audio. I've found if you wait after hearing the first 2 beeps, you will hear another beep and then the audio starts. Give that a try.

Not interested in larger trunk. Initiating Apple Car Play is frustrating. I learned just yesterday that the bike's audio system can be turned OFF, a feature that was evidently enable with last update of firmware. Press and hold the "audio" button to toggle on/off. Typically, I do not wish to phone or text while riding, riding is an "escape" for me.

I wish you didn’t have to wait to hear sound before plugging the phone in to the bike though. When I get gas I just shut off the engine and leave the bike on so I don’t have to go through the procedure again. A bigger trunk would be nice, but I would settle for a decent helmet holder.

Yes I would pay for the larger, unpainted trunk, provided the price wasn’t totally outrageous. It would beat the cost of trading up. I finally received my 2021 Tour DCT. As I said in an comment in a previous video, my only choice in Canada was the all black model and I wasn’t sure I’d like the color. Now that I have it in the flesh, I’m very happy with the color. I’m kinda glad I wasn’t able to get the ardent red. As beautiful as that one is, my new bike is striking in its differentness. It’s not like most of the new GoldWings out there. I was only able to put about 60 miles on it before the weather turned sour here. It may be several days before I can ride again. But in that short ride, I found that this bike is hands down, smoother riding than my two previous Wings. This is what a GoldWing should be. It soaked up those harsh bumps with ease and the softer bumps, like an expensive luxury car. I think I’m going to have a long, loving relationship with this one.

You can actually turn the bike off at gas/food stops, and as long as you do not turn off the headset, CarPlay starts again after 10-30 seconds. Right where it left off...in navi or playing music. You can even disconnect the phone and have lunch and reconnect the phone to come right back to CarPlay. Just connect the phone BEFORE starting the bike. That has worked for me 99% of the time.

Sounds like it may be due to using a non Apple made lightning cord. I had the same problem for my 2018, and after switching to a genuine Apple lightning cord, Apple car play connects every time I plug the phone in. You are correct in the order of set up.. headset, then phone. Siri works like a champ, and using talk to text while riding is seamless. Saying this, as I saw in your original Car Play video, you had some sort of off brand red cable in the storage pocket.

A couple of comments about Apple car play on my new 2021 Goldwing: What a stupid idea to have put the USB 1 connector (the one to connect your iPhone to get Apple car play to work) in the REAR TRUNCK because of the airbag taking the place of the front glove box.!! Knowing that you have frequently to reset the connection with your iphone, I had to reroute the USB 1 connector into the right small glove box where the gas tank opening button is.... Then, the play list selection is weird and I can’t figure out how to display the play list choice once you have selected one from the SIRI voice command. SIRI ask you the give the exact name of the play list you want to listen, and you might not remember all of them. So an extensive review of all the Apple car play features details would be very welcome. Aside to this I have question for the owners of the new 2021 DCT Goldwing: the gearbox is fairly noisy with a clinging noise when riding at low RPM or when the gearbox shifts down. Do you experiment this as well? However this bike is probably the best I ever owned after numerous other Hondas and Harleys. I have mounted the Remus exhaust, and when using the Sport mode, it feels like a Porsche 911...!!

Sorry Chris. I didn't want to write a book but you asked a lot of questions. OK. Several observations: Sena 50S, ‘18 Tour. Garmin Zumo XT on the left side. I use CarPlay ALL the time. 99% of the time it connects flawlessly. Turn on, or start bike. Turn on Sena. Wait for the beeps/headset icon. Plug in iPhone 11. CarPlay comes alive. I always turn off Bluetooth on my phone prior to startup. I have the Zumo connected to the Sena as 2nd phone/gps via Bluetooth. Headset is connected to bike as Phone. This is the way I ride on every ride. I sometimes have minor issues when Apple updates my phone, but nothing serious. I have had several CarPlay drop issues, maybe once in 10 rides. If I just unplug the phone and plug it in again, CarPlay comes alive. I’ve found it possible to unplug the large part of the usb and plug it back in on the fly. Not ideal, but it works. It appears to happen only when I forget, and have Bluetooth on, on the phone, or on the Zumo. Zumo does a lot of interrupts that make my intercom blank for a few seconds, which I find annoying, so I just watch the Zumo, unless I’m riding alone. Then I use both GMaps and Zumo. I’m thinking there are some Bluetooth conflicts occurring occasionally. I use the Siri button to call xyz restaurant name, or text abc...whatever. It works flawlessly for me. I dislike the graphics of Apple Maps, and find Google Maps to be easier on my eyes to see roads, etc. So, if I want to activate navi by voice, I move the icon to the mike on the Google Maps screen, press enter, and say, navigate to xyz. Select the preferred route and hit enter. Just my preference. So, Siri for calls/text/info. Google Maps for voice navi. I’ve tried to make a call in Google Maps and it doesn’t work for me. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong, but I’m sticking to what works for me. Bluetooth only connection for CarPlay? Absolutely not. Bluetooth has many limitations. Only 3 Intercom Friends, only 2 phone/gps connections. So, if you connect to the bike as phone 1, and the Garmin/radar/whatever in phone 2, you are out of connections. And if you also connect another rider as Universal (Bluetooth) intercom, you have even more limitations. Don’t muck it up by insisting on Bluetooth for CarPlay too. If you think they can add more to basic Bluetooth architecture, check the FCC Bluetooth protocols. There are limitations. It might work fine in your car, but there you are only making 1 Bluetooth connection. We commonly have many more. And finally, the unpainted trunk. For $2500 to expand my capacity, and paint it to match, I’ll just buy a new bike with fewer miles, and be done with it. I’m not rich, but that just seems a better option.

Try turning on the Headset first and let it go through it’s routine, then turn on the Gold Wing second and let it go through it’s start up routine and then third plug the iPhone into the USB.

Sorry but the Harley infotainment system is far superior to the Honda system. My bike (2019 RGS) automatically connects to my phone via bluetooth and if a text comes in it a) alerts me and offers to read it out to me if I am moving b) sends a text automatically to the sender telling them I am out riding and will respond at a later time. I do NOT use CarPlay or Android Auto although my bike has both, also I do not use a headset

I just bought a 2023 Honda Goldwing and this system with connectivity and such is real stupid and difficult to use. I can't get the bike to locate my current uclear headset. Also can't even get my Android auto system to pop up when I plug in my phone which is a pretty new phone. To answer your question on the trunk I would not pay that kind of money for a bigger trunk. If I had an older Goldwing I would probably add the cost of a trunk, plus another couple Grand ish in depreciation and just trade my bike off for a newer one with the bigger trunk. I also prefer that Honda sells trunks already painted so we don't have that additional cost and hassle.

If you connect your phone to your bike via Bluetooth, you can make and receive calls without CarPlay, and play music from the phone. You definitely do not want to connect your phone to your headset if you plan on using the Honda audio system. I am, however, going to try removing the phone from the bike's BT and see how that affects CarPlay.

If you're going to use CarPlay, don't change the Source audio. I found that if I change the Source of my audio (the Source button on the left handlebar) and THEN go to CarPlay, no audio is heard through my headset. If I leave Source alone, then all audio on the bike works perfectly. That's my experience. Can anyone try this and see if that is what happens to you? Please know that on the new Goldwing, to properly use CarPlay, you pair the headset to the bike and the iPhone to the bike. Never pair the phone also directly to the headset. Let the Goldwing manage that for you.

@@cruisemansgarage: FWIW, Mazda offered a Car Play/Android Auto upgrade a couple of years ago. It was not merely a software update - there were parts in the kit to upgrade the USB ports 2 amp service, in order to keep the device fully charged while in use. With that in mind, I'd have to ask how long your phone's battery would last while using wireless CP? It would kinda suck to arrive at your destination just in time to see your phone go dead because you were running apps thru CP...

Hello Chris! I‘m using Apple Car Play since the beginning (2019) and I always have the problem with the connection you have. Meanwhile I know now what the problem is. This issue has been adressed to Honda Europe several times but it seems that they are not listening. So here is the cause: Because Apple Car Play demands an external microphone when connecting ( which in our case is the BT headset in the helmet) the system often can`t find this external mic. When your Iphone is connected via the BT cable (in my case in the trunk because I have the AirBag version) the iPhone is ALWAYS connected to the system. So let’s assume, after a break at the fueling station, you switch on the ignition, the iPhone is already connected to the system. Now you switch on your BT headset and with a time delay of a few seconds your Headset is connected and you can see that on your dashboard. But then it’s already too late for the system, because it couldn’t find the external mic (because, as mentioned, the iPhone was already connected to the system via the cable). The only solution to solve the problem is opening the trunk and reconnecting the iPhone. The main bug in the system is that it requires an external mic to function properly. Your BT connection is always slower than the signal of the iPhone thru the cable which runs with the speed of light. Only when your connection with the BT Headset has been established in the first place and the connection of your iPhone comes second, it works. However in some rare occasions it works the other way around ( but nobody knows why) but in 99% you have to establish the Headset first ( and you must see the symbol on the dashboard) before connecting the iPhone. The problem could be solved if Honda ( or should I say Apple) removes the internal necessity to search for an external mic.

Now that is a very informative comment! I’ve always found the Bluetooth connectivity challenging regardless of the bike. I tend to try and minimize the complexity by using an iPhone and Sena products. Understanding how the various components, bike, headset, phone interact is key to solving “issues” that invariably arise. Thanks for your insights regarding the hookup process and the need for following a set procedure. Truly does help.

Possibly $2000 so the trunk can fit 2 helmets (and nothing else) is a bit much. I have never understood why the complaint. A cable lock is much, much cheaper. I considered a trunk for travel storage; not as a place to put helmets.

Not digging the Cardo/Goldwing thing - too much frustration. I can pair the Cardo Black to the bike and Car Play will work every time. The problem is the next time I try it, they will not connect even though I see the Cardo and Bluetooth address in the list of devices. I have to have the bike ‘forget this device’, then re-pair to get it to connect to the Cardo. Huge PITA. The Cardo will also pair to the phone by itself, but will not pair to the bike at the same time. Ideally (for me), I could pair to the bike for the radio and GPS audio, and to the phone for my own music and phone use, without having to use Car Play. Doesn’t seem possible. I really won’t use Car Play for 2 reasons - I don’t have unlimited data for map use via the phone, and I’m not a fan of always keeping a device on a charger - not good for the battery. If I didn’t have to plug the phone in to use Car Play, I’d use it without using the map. Looks like this Cardo Black will be used only for phone connection and intercom use, which is a shame because the radio from the bike sounds really good with the JBL speakers.

Just plug the dongle into the same place you normally plug your phone into.CarlinKit is my favorite..The entire trunk is bigger , taller and wider, than the pre 2021. not just a bigger lid.
