'Appalling' condition of Detroit house's front yard leaves neighbors livid

Some Detroit residents in one neighborhood are tired of feeling like they live next to a junkyard on Faust Avenue.

They issued over 11K in tickets. He just ignores them. Apparently, they haven't caught on that the tickets are useless! He should be charged with operating a junkyard illegally, creating a public eyesore and health hazard. Arrest him, bring him to court, force him to get rid of the junk AND pay back tickets or go to jail for a year.

they really just have to keep ticketing him and put a lean on his house, then you can force them to sell it to pay for the leans and clean up fees. Some cities just show up with a dump truck and the sheriff and take it everything away and send you a bill, which then becomes a lean.

I lived next door to a person who has a yard like that. That's not my fight to knock on someone's door. That's how people get killed. The city came and removed all of that junk and because they were leasing the home, the home owner evicted them.

One of my church members lives next door to that house. He has called the city several times and nothing has changed as far as that junk being removed. I deliver a food box to him once a month and sometimes can barely get to his driveway due to all the stuff and cars belonging to those people. The last time I went I took pictures of the house and a lady sitting in that black car you see in the video said she would “break that phone; just try me”. I hope the city does remove that stuff and I applaud those neighbors for their courage.

No, the city never said this neighbor has more rights. I sure didn’t hear that in this report and this is just a two and a half news report. Look it up, there’s other people who work for the city of Detroit and they have tried several times to tell the neighbor to clean up. I was curious about this neighbor and there’s a lot more information about this house. They are saying he’s ignoring all his tickets that are up to $11,000, probably more now. That neighbor is just being stubborn and lazy. The city has tried several ways to warn the neighbor to clean up or else they’ll go and clean it up their selves and that person can be arrested and still have to pay fines for the city to clean it up. Apparently that person or family, just doesn’t care.

That's amazing! I had a neighbor who complained about me after I cleaned my garage on a Sunday afternoon, and left a pile of items on the driveway to go to the dump. I secured a green tarp over these items The next morning, at seven thirty, I caught this neighbor taking photos of the tarp. When I asked him what he was doing he ran back to his house. The items were picked up on Tuesday morning and taken to the dump. Wednesday a city worker showed up at my front door to post a notice about junk on my driveway on my door. After asking him if he could see junk on my driveway and him answering that he couldn't, he took his notice back and left. The fact that this homeowner has not been approached by the city to clean his mess up just doesn't make sense.

I feel so sorry for the neighbors. My mother is the oldest resident on her street and has a beautifully maintain yard with flowers everywhere for over 55 years. One by one neighbors moved away and the new residents became more and more dirty with trash everywhere. It looks so horrible. It makes me so mad that my mother can't enjoy her little paradise like garden, like she should be able to because her neighbors (all but one) have turned the street into a dump. And I don't dare call the township on them because they have already threaten my mother and I fear for her safety. She's 81 and has never hurt anyone, she tries to be neighborly but can't even enjoy her own yard in her final years.

I had untreated depression for the longest time, and my family was battling health issues, and the trash just got worse and worse and worse, and the worst the trash was, the worse my depression was. It's a vicious cycle, and thank god I got help when I did, cause I don't know where I'd be without it. I'm now helping my family get organized and back to having a cleaner house. It's not been easy, but the result of the effort when it's all done will all be worth it. I’m wondering if adult protective services could be called in. Hoarding is a mental illness that cannot be fixed by threats. Tickets fines whatever won’t work. This person obviously can’t take care of themselves. Here in Alabama a deputy seeing this could call protective services instantly. I feel for this neighborhood. I also feel for the hoarder. But that’s not just an eyesore. Between the odors I know must be in that house and the pests being allowed to breed freely, I just can’t imagine living next door to that. The inside is worse. Guaranteed. Sad.

How can the city not do something about this??? Seriously. That's such a nice, beautiful neighborhood except for the dump on that property. Screw those tickets, remove it all and do something to prevent it. The neighborhood doesn't deserve to suffer because of one wingnut

We had a guy down the street from us who's house looked something like a junk yard. Not only that. The house was falling apart. No grass, just huge concrete rocks, broken down vehicles with green stickers. City said he gets tickets all the time. All he does is pay the fine or go to jail for a few days. Homeowners association wont force him to clean it up. Just report it.

Good to see the rest of the neighborhood wanting to get rid of this eyesore to maintain the beauty and safety of their neighborhood and protect their property values. Too many good people would rather give up and move away, leaving only the bad neighbors behind, which is how neighborhoods eventually become crime ridden. And boo to the city of Detroit for taking this long to actually enforce their own ordinances, and finally decide to send somebody else out to haul away all the junk. In the suburbs if you even dare to let your grass grow too long, they will send a hired professional out to mow it for you and then give you the bill. A situation like this front yard wouldn't have lasted more than a week in Canton or Royal Oak or Saint Clair Shores

The tickets are just paper to the offender. The city should haul away the trash and scrap metal, sell the metal to recoup funds lost on the tickets, and expel the offender from the home or keep it tidy. The residents have fewer rights than the junk man! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!

I wonder if any of the neighbors have asked the messy yard people if they need help. Sometimes a person gets overwhelmed with the task at hand and ignores the task rather than tackle it. A man near me had a similar looking yard. He just wasn't able to take care of it on his own and did not know where to start. A neighbor started helping him get rid of things. It took months, but I can see his house and entire yard now. It looks good.
