My daddy used to say. "You can tell how much a man was liked by his funeral, and when your gone, your reputation you left still lives on". Thank you so much for digging up all these memories for me. 😊

Great video. Loved it. Love that he signed his funeral program for attendees. I think it was a great idea for Felix to plan his own send off albeit a few years early. I’m married to a modern day Felix. Born 100 years to late, he’d never leave these hills if he didn’t have to go to work. he’s a logger so he stays in the woods all day anyways and will rarely leave our homestead any other time. Hates town, avoids people but loves his animals. Fears God and loves old folk and children. I got me a modern day mountain man. Loved this story. Wonderful to hear these people being remembered. ❤

I was told by my grandmother I was born 200 years to late. Lol, I guess she was right, I don't go alot from my farm now that I retired. And I wouldn't want to be you if you hurt one of my critters. My granddaughter and son live just down the road and one of them pop by every evening to see if I'm still upright lol. I have one thing I look forward to every year and that's gathering with a group of friends in the mountains and camping out for 10 days. That my big trip, rest of the year I look for that granddaughter and my son dropping by. Other then that people have to stop by and look for my out around the barn and animals lot, pastures. Had the husband for 36 years, cancer took him. So I just go about my day doing or not doing whatever I want. Had one of the best and not looking for another. And I don't understand why men think a female can't live by themselves and be happy. You make your life what you want happy or sad. I choose to be happy and enjoy the critters and woodland around me. And I always to busy for any requests for dating requests 😅 😂 be surprised have many will tell you they always wanted to date since high school. Yep, not biting that cookie. This man was right a good friend sure can be spoiled by getting married, l prefer the friendship.
My bride tells family and friends my favorite saying, a man can never have a full life until he has learned to be alone and have a quite mind. That was wonderful, thanks for sharing.

I have heard that we all preach our own funeral by the way we live. I think uncle Bush did that. He didn’t need a preacher to say good or bad about him he knew where he stood with his maker and was satisfied with that. A great story thanks for sharing.

I know someone who had a funeral 6 weeks before she died. She was one who kept a lot of stuff going. Keeping people mad at each other. It didn't work though, after her death, they found out no mad at anyone. All the ill feelings came from one source. Everybody is happy, happy, happy.

Very interesting & moving story about that old timer. FYI, the family name 'Breazeale ' is derived from the old Irish name 'O'Breasail' which comes originally from the Celtic 'Bres', a name which meant 'prince-mighty'. Seems like 'Uncle Bush' lived up to that name.

My grandfather was the type setter for the Joplin Globe when this happened. My mother made me promise, no funeral and no obituary when she died. Momma was 6 and she remember her daddy bringing home the issue of this live man having his funeral. When grandpa died he had no preacher only family and friends got to get up and speak, he didn't like preachers either. Listening to your stories brings back memories of my mothers stories. She grew up in a time where word of mouth was a way to tell history to family. 🙂

Fantastic Story. It is ironic for me as we just took down several old Black Walnut trees recently. They have gone to the sawmill to be cut into boards, for a friend of ours that does wood working. He makes really nice pieces of furniture using Black Walnut lumber. There is nothing prettier than polished Black Walnut. Thanks for the story to start our Saturday off.

Many years ago,I was working at my grandmothers funeral home in Newport,we had an old mountain man come in to make his arrangements for his funeral,he told of his plans, brought in for us to keep,a casket he made himself,he told us where the grave was that he had already dug,and every so often,he would bring in some artificial flowers in,wrapped in plastic.I don’t know if I ever knew what happened to him,but I always thought it was an interesting story.

This story intrigues me. I've gotta watch it again. As far as being buried before your dead I think it's a hell a hoot. Everyone is happy in the end, the ole man is happy he heard the preachers words with no disparaging words, the preacher was happy he had a large crowd to speak to, and the people... well then as now we're amazed and left thinking that's not at all a bad idea. I'm just left wondering what happened to ole mule? You out done yourself JD. 👍🏻👍🏻💯

It's too late for me to have a funeral like Uncle bushes. I'm 63 and most of my friends and family have already gone to the other side. And those who attend would never make a crowd of such numbers. I was moved when at the woman he loves funeral. This is not goodbye I'll just see you on the other side of the river. Well there won't be much hoopla here after I'm gone. I do expect to see those I love the most and the to my heart and soul. Including even my pets and fine horse that have gone ahead of me. We'll all be there to welcome me. At the forefront of my crowd will be my father's father grandad Blacksher who I believe has watched over and protected me as a guardian angel since I was 15 years old. Today a lot of us make our own funeral plans. But have parted from this plane . So many have gone before me. When the memory come upon me I always speak their name out loud so they know that they are loved and never forgotten. And all still live within me. Thanks again for a really great story good teacher j.d.❤

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I knew an old woman like that she came to the West side of Washington State from the Dakota's, sometime in the '40's when she was a young girl. I used to board my horses at her place. She was half blind and used an old hoe as her walking stick. A spoon could stand straight up in her coffee. She wasn't too fond of her family, as they were always trying to get her in assisted living. She was my dear friend. I think of her fondly and often. Oh, my lord! The stories that girl could tell.🪶
