Appalachian Trail State Overview: Georgia

In this video I will discuss the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail. I'll go over my experience traveling to GA. where I stayed once I got down there, my thoughts on the Approach Trail, places I stayed on the trail, the towns we stopped in and anything else I could think about while I was out in the GA section of the trail! Grab a cup of coffee, watch it on the treadmill at the gym, throw it on the TV for the whole family to enjoy. This is going to be a long one!
These videos were also pretty highly requested but also took a VERY long time to prep for and make sure I could find footage and got my information correct. While I would like to make one of these for every Appalachian Trail state its going to depend how well this video and maybe the follow up North Carolina video do. We will see! Hope you enjoy this one!

Get a ride to top of the falls. A lot of those who quit at Neels Gap did the stairs. Why travel and plan, just to end your hike after 31 official trail miles. The section from Springer to Neels Gap is eminently doable

Hey Chris....greetings from Hadley, MA! I really enjoy --and appreciate--your videos. I attempted a “flip flop” thru hike in 2018; I, too, came down with the “noro-crud”. It took 3 days to recuperate in Waynesboro PA. I did get back on the trail.....and did fairly well for a 65 year old.....until an old Navy back injury took its toll on me and off the trail once more. After PT, preparing for a return to the trail, my aging parents took over my life for the the next 18 months. Now I accept that I am a section hiker.....hoping to tackle Georgia late September. I will, watch your NC video as well....to find the best place to be picked up. Again, Bravo-Zulu.....nice job providing invaluable information!

Terrific info; thanks so much! I'm starting NOBO in early April and am so stoked for the trip! (Even though I'll very likely only be able to complete about a quarter of the AT this year.) I didn't notice discussion of bear hangs versus canisters and gather that this wasn't an issue. Will check your NC video as well. I'm leaning strongly towards bear hang in order to save about a pound of weight, but I do like the sheer convenience of a canister.

Hey Chris, thanks for your videos. Last summer my wife and I re-hiked the section from Springer to Neels Gap. Even though we did this in late May, Hawk Mt. Shelter was overflowing with people -- some delusional (I thought) about actually thru-hiking with a late May start. All the way to Neels the Trail had a lot of people. Lance Creek area was overflowing, too.

Yet another great video... and glad to hear you experienced some nice Georgia hospitality... we Georgians like to hear it! Also agree with you about the approach trail. IMO Amicalola is an easier departure point, the falls are great, and the trail is exactly like most of the trail in Georgia - so as you say, you learn quickly what you're getting into. Not sure why it gets a bad rap. Keep the videos coming please.

Enjoyed your description of my home state's probably of the trail. Aspiring hikers may like to know someone options on the start of the approach trail - re: those infamous steps. If you go through the arch and proceed straight instead of turning left for the "official"approach trail, you'll climb to the top of the falls by the East ridge trail, which is part of the original approach before the stairs were built. No stairs this way, but about 1/2 is a fairly rocky service road. It spreads out that rise, but you miss the view of the falls (of course you can see them the night before 😉). Or, as someone said, you can get dropped at the top of the falls. Misses the view of the falls and the arch, but ... The park lodge and park camp sites (not the at shelter) are there above the falls as an option for the night before. All of this is options for the very start of the approach, a mile or so if it, after that all converted into the main approach trail, which is typical trail to the top of Springer. I'll also mention the Len Foote inn, which is off the approach trail, that folks might consider for night zero.

If I recommend sending any resupply boxes one of the only I would recommend would be to Neel Gap. You pass right through. They have some resupply options I saw there but it would probably be costly and they definitely dont have IMO all that you may need. It was more like some snacks available and some frozen dinner stuff that I saw. You may have to take a trip down to the town we stayed at which had a grocery store.

We did ours at the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center). Its an outfitter that the trail legit walks right by. I dont think they even charged for it. They have a computer / printer kiosk setup there specifically for Smokies permits. Big Mama and I both got ours there. I am pretty sure there were hostels that also allowed you to print them in the town before this. The people at the NOC were very cool though. Get it there I say and if they arent open at the time the breakfast spot next door was great. So it all works out haha

I’m sooooo glad I came across your videos!!!! My son from Austin invited his 63 yo mom to join him got a couple weeks starting at Springer. I’m from SC and hike day trails and camp. I AM in pretty good shape.....Any hot tips? Not really into shelters and a bunch of people.

Just take it slow in the start and I think you'll be good to go. A lot of people get really excited at the starts and try to pound out miles and it's just not a good idea. Other than that not much. If you avoid shelters you shouldn't have much of a problem avoiding people!

We started on April 2nd on the approach trail. I think Georgia took us something like 8 days with being sick and everything. I remember specifically being SUPER excited to FINALLY cross the NC border. Felt like eternity.

Did you ever have a time when you were ready to call it quits for the day and absolutely couldn't find a suitable tree to hang your food bag? My biggest anxiety would be to find a great stealth spot, but no place to hang my bag. What do ya do? Keep moving on?

Hey Chris, me and a friend are wanting to hike a section of the AT and we have about 5 days which includes travel there and back to the airport. Considering our limited time, what section do you recommend? I see the first section is 8 days but the second section through Nantahala Mountains, North Carolina is only a 29-mile hike and only three days. Should we do that section instead? Trying to get the best of the trail and thought you could help? thanks in advance.

With travel time you could start at the approach trail in Georgia and go until the Mountain Crossings outfitter. I believe its about 30ish miles and their are shuttle drivers galore in that area if you need a hand getting back to the airport. If you dont particularly care what state though I would recommend you check out NH or Maine personally. I also loved Virginia!

not really sure. We got pretty sick and spent like 3 days in town. But I believe it was about 5 days not taking into account the illness. I could also be completely remembering wrong haha

I was really fond of the zpacks bear bag system. It's about 50 for the bag line rock sack and carabiner. Super light and works great. I actually did a review of it on my channel!
