I was supposed to inherit the old Singer treadle sewing machine that my great aunt loved and sewed on. It had been her mother's, my great grandmother's, before her, so it was precious, indeed. Alas, the wondrous machine was never given to me, as dear Auntie had promised, for I had moved far away and I suppose the antique was deemed too fragile and heavy to ship. It was just as well, though, for I had never learned to sew except by hand, thanks to my great aunt, who taught me as a child to stitch very neatly indeed!

I learned how to sew on the same kind of machine when I was 3. Momma and Grandmother sat me on a stack of books in a dinning room chair. Momma was cooking in the kitchen and Grandmother sat beside me in a chair. She wouldn’t let me use the peddle…she had me turn the wheel with my right hand and hold the material with my left. I was making my own doll clothes before long! Blessed memories❣️♥️♥️♥️

As a little sprout, I remember my momma letting me sit down in front of her beautiful Singer Treadle Sewing Machine and teaching me how to sew. It was such a relaxing way to make pieces of material into clothing creations unlike anyone else's. My momma was good at sewing. She could cut down a larger item to make something for me out of it. She used flour sacks to make dresses for me. Simpler times that so many will never understand. Thanks for helping many of us to remember wonderful times from our past to reflect on. Lizzy was too kindhearted, and felt too blessed to charge for her talent. She knew what it meant to the people of the community who would perhaps never have their own a stitching machine to have beautiful clothes made by one. A work of love and GOD given talent. Had she charged for her work the machine would have paid for itself, but she knew it was better to give than receive. Her husband also showed great love as well. Another great story, stay safe and GOD bless

This story brought a smile on my face because I recognize my mother in Lizzy . She was always wearing an apron in the house when we were small but going out she looked her best . The first sewing machine I remember was a build in Singer . It looked like a small cupboard , the opened door served as support of the roof that tilted open . The machine had to be tilted upwards and secured and at the bottom was a roster that had to be moved up and down to make the needle move . Closed it served as hiding place for candy as we weren't allowed to just take some . If my parents ever went out we pleaded to our older siblings to open the lid and try to steal some as their arms were longer . My mother is 95 y/o now .

Thanks for the memory. It takes me back in time to my sweet grandmother and watching her sew by the window. She had a Singer treadle that she mail ordered in 1915. She was about 34 then. I can almost see her sitting at that machine sewing clothes for her children, husband and then for grandchildren. I still have that machine in front of my bedroom window and it still makes a beautiful stitch. My dear brother, who works on sewing machines, keeps it in good condition. What a treasure of memories came with that old treadle when she gave it to me in 1961 when her eyes began to grow dim. I played with buttons in her button box at her knee as a child while I listened to the clickety-clack of the treadle and watched her feet and fingers weave magic before my eyes. She inspired me to learn to sew and I took sewing classes in jr hi and high school. I have more modern machines and sergers now that work a newer magic, but I always think of the one who gave me a more precious gift, love and a desire to sew for my own children and grandchildren and a lot of people in my community. I’m 81 now and do most of my sewing on bright sunny days so it’s easier on my eyes. Thanks again for the memory.

That was the best gift he could have given her. My father repaired industrial sewing machines in factories almost all his working life. My sister and I had a real, working, electric, sewing machine (that Daddy put together for us) to learn how to sew on when we were both very young(late 1950's). Both Anna and I learned how to make our own clothes; and, we helped Mom make many things for the house and our brothers. I even made some of my mother's dresses. I repaired many jeans, shirts, skirts, coats, underwear, dresses, and other cloth items on that sewing machine. I still sew on electric sewing machines. Sewing scrap fabric (left over from other projects) into new cloth (to make quilts out of) relaxes me.
