Apocalypse Tapestry (Part 1) - Angers - France

The Tapestry of the Apocalypse
The famous tapestry of the Apocalypse is kept in Château d'Angers, former residence of the Dukes of Anjou. In 1373, Louis I of Anjou commissions a sumptuous tapestry illustrating the Book of Revelation according to Saint John. Jean Bondol known as Hennequin de Bruges was a famous official painter at the court, worked on the tapestry and created "portraitures et patrons", that is to say, cartoons and mock-ups. The creation of the masterpiece was entrusted to the workshop of the Paris weaver, Robert Poisson. The whole work was completed in 1382.
Originally, the tapestry was composed of six sets. With time almost third of the tapestry was lost, scenes have disappeared forever. Some descriptions helped in imagining the lost scenes.
There's a mistake at 3:00 , please read "Revelation 1, 10-11"

Thank you! This link was posted to my SCA-like House Capuchin page on FaceBook. We love medieval history! A few years ago, I returned to my Catholic roots. I hadn't visited Revelations in a long time, and your great videos have touched two of my greatest interests~ medieval history and the Catholic Church. Bless you for your devotion to the project!

I ventured to Angers today to visit the Chateaux and the town and didn't even know about this masterpiece. I was absolutely awestruck. It is the most powerful piece of Christian art I've ever seen. I spent 2 hours looking at each scene and reading the relevant passage from Revelation. Why this isn't known the world over as one of the greatest masterpieces of Western art?

Frankly speaking dear Scott, I don't know why no one knows about it, even most of French people aren't aware of it. I spent years visiting Château d'Angers and especially the tapestry. I decided, finally, to photograph it and upload it to KZread. You've seen part 1,there is also part 2 and 3. Right now, i'm working on the fourth set. I don't get much comments, thank you very much for yours, i'm delighted to know that you've visited this masterpiece.

Hi, thank you so much for uploading this beautiful content on such a unique object! I am a university student studying and writing a thesis on this amazing tapestry so all your videos on this so far have been so so helpful and inspiring for me. Would you grant me permission to use your images for my research with full credit and reference? The high resolution and in depth focus on details of your photographs are the best I have come across on the internet so I would be honored to credit your name in my acknowledgments and against each image in my study, if this is agreeable to you. Sending all the best!

Dear Elisabetta, thank you for your comment. I never thought that someone in this world would prepare a thesis on this tapestry. Amazing job you're doing. I think, by now, you've watched the 4 parts, there are still 2 (which makes a total of 6 parts representing the 6 sets of the tapestry). I'm working on the 5th part right now and it would take a while to finish as a lot of scenes have been destroyed. I hope to finish these 2 last parts during this year. Each video takes around 2 to 3 months of photo processing, design and work. Please not that I'm not analyzing (although little) John's revelation (it's out of scope), I'm just introducing a small analysis based on Hennequin de Bruges' art. You may use whatever image or images you like, especially the close-ups which are taken on purpose to show the weavers work. Don't forget to credit me :) and I would be delighted to read your thesis when you finish it. Kind regards. P.S.: May I know your nationality?

Hi, thanks for your comment. Concerning a website, not to my knowledge. I've shot these close-ups on purpose just to show the viewers the amazing work of the weavers. I haven't used all my close-ups as this will make the duration of the videos very very long. Thanks again.

AMAZING!!!! but I always picture the sword coming straight out of the mouth of Jesus -- not like he is holding it sideways in his mouth. His spoken word IS the double edged sword.
