Something about this scene is that Willard is consistently right. He’s been in the war too long to know better. He told them to let them go, and the boat crew guns down 3-4 innocent people, but acts like it’s a horrible crime when Willard mercy kills 1 of them. They play around with the smoke and get clean killed. Willard is in a completely different league and that’s why he survives.

@@followingtheroe1952 In principle I agree with you, but in the context of the scene, Willard kind of has a point. Basically all of the rest of the crew acts in a completely irresponsible way. Chief's zeal is ridiculous, Clean overreacts, they're killing without even thinking about it because they're big dumb idiots who should never handle guns and immediately regret it. So Willard kills the girl deliberately. We in the audience can say "this man's action is evil, this man is evil", but we more or less know that from the start : Willard's a professional assassin from the US special forces. What can the rest of the crew tell him ? "It's wrong to kill this woman whom we have mortally wounded for no reason and whose family we have just murdered for no reason" ? The better option was given at the start : not stop the boat. Not get involved. And this is probably applicable to the entire Vietnam situation. The best thing the US could have done was not to get involved.

Willards statement that they shouldn't have stopped was based on his statement of this isn't part of the mission and the crew chiefs insistence to do so. Willard shot her because he simply wasn't going to get delayed. the crew chief was operating under different orders, part of the confusion of wat.it also a parallel that speaks to the larger narrative of kurtz not playing by the rules and the hypocrisy of the mission. Willards shooting of her clearly was punishable by court martial, yet he's on a mission to kill kurtz who had done the same act

I thought this scene was 100% ab libed-at least Martin Sheen's part. I remember Sheen in an interview said that the script read "Patrol Boat encounters local boat on river."(maybe even just "SCENE: RIVER") And that was all. When Sheen asked what do I say? What do I do?", to Coppola. Copolla said "Marty, YOU'RE Captain Willard." And motioned to just proceed as Sheen thought Willard would. In fact, I think that's on the documentary of Apocolypse Now; called Hearts of Darkness. "Hearts" might even be even better than "Apocolypse". Hearts was directed by Coppola's wife.

I prefer TR's "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Fear is pathological in war, so is lack of command authority. Both can lead to terror and random violence. If Willard had felt a need to interdict that boat, he would have either killed all the occupants without giving them a chance, or he would have killed none of them. Either they're the enemy and they die, or they're not and you don't shoot them. The problem becomes when draftee soldiers can't deal with the grey areas. Willard knows them well, and advises the Chief not to stress his crew that way. The ridiculous panic-driven massacre that is the Chief's making is exemplary of many similar incidents throughout the war, I'm sure. It happens in EVERY war when foreign soldiers interact with locals with insufficient intelligence data and too little leadership.

We cut ‘em in half with a machine gun and give ‘em a band-aid. It was a lie. And the more I saw them, the more I hated lies.” This happened during the village raid too. Killgore and his crew bombed the shit out of that village, but when the mother and her baby came to Killgore for help, Killgore put the both of them on a helicopter to bring them to a hospital. What’s the point of killing all of them when you still save two of them? Kurtz hated this. He believed that to win war, you will have to let go of moral values and judgment and be able to kill without those. He all said it in his monologue. Apocalypse Now is a story that will last for centuries. There’s a lot of depth about the human mind and what it is able to do. It freaks me out.

Coppola and everyone in 'the GODFATHER' worshipped him .but he is brilliant when he lectures Willard ,someone he knows has seen ''the horrors'',and says so. he knows they wouldn't send anyone but a true killer to take him out. when he finds out the Capt. is from Ohio, he asks, "are you far from the river"? Willard: "the Ohio river sir?" gotta love it. people complained that he was a has been raking in more cash, but his scenes can't be done by anyone else. this is where you have to give it up to Coppola. he knows the good will far outweigh the bad, in hiring Brando. he gives an intense effort worthy of anything he ever did in his career.

@BossHossGT500 that it may be, but the events in the movie literally never happened in real life nor where they close.. The closest thing to the events in this movie is when roughly 500 unarmed people were killed by the U.S. Army soldiers from C Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry. Reginemt, where ordered by their lieutenant to kill everyone in the My Lai Village in Vietnam because the Americans kept encountering enemy forces who would ambush them and then flee into the My Lai village and hide their weapons as if they where civilians.. When in fact it WAS the civilian population which decided they would form a resistance and harass the Americans as much as possible.. The army eventually grew tired of having to lose men on every single mission _(because they where constantly misled and setup by those villagers)_ because the villagers gave them false info which constantly lead them into ambushes set by those same villagers. However, The only person to be criminally charged with killing those people was the lieutenant who ordered the killing.

A man from Virginia who worked on them while in Viet Nam (he said he'd always see "the kids" off on patrol; he was 29 at the time so they called him "Pop") said cleaning blood off the decks of returning patrol boats was an almost daily occurrence. Dave Roever, who was on one of these and had a phosphorus grenade explode in his hand while on that duty, runs a Christian camp helping returning severely injured servicemen. I think this scene is to depict man's hypocrisy when it comes to the ethics of killing during wartime. It starts when Clean, along with some other crew members (it is slightly unclear who participates and who doesn't), waste the people in the boat. It looks like an accident. They are even surprised by it themselves. They wasted three people for no reason at all. Similarly, an audience will feel bewilderment watching this scene. How will an audience judge the crew? Will they think they are monsters? The whole thing looks more like an accident and somehow that softens the way we judge the crew. Then Willard comes along and pulls the trigger on someone who was probably as good as dead, and he does it because he needs to fulfill his mission. The feeling we get from his act is a lot more visceral. We view it as a cold-hearted act. He shows no hesitation, no remorse. Willard would be judged as a monster by many. But what is really happening here? The killing of the three by the crew was completely unnecessary and seemingly unintentional. The killing of the wounded woman was necessary to continue the mission, it was intentional and it could easily be justified as a mercy kill. The first act of killing was a war crime. The second act of killing (arguably) was not. But it's Willards act of INTENTIONAL killing that we (intuitively) condemn the most. It's irrational. People's judgement of war and violence is completely irrational. Yet, with that same irrationality we let people judge wars and judge veterans. With the same irrationality people will support wars or protest against them. To use Kurtz's words: It's judgement that defeats us.

I saw the complete opposite. The accident as you call was setup. The inhumanity to man was setup by the wars reckless disregard for the people of Vietnam. This in turn put American soldiers in fear of everyone. The Captain made a big mistake forcing the chef on that boat when we clearly didn't want to go. Mr. Shades was way too trigger happy and afraid as well. Calling it an accident is a huge stretch of reality. I judge them the same as the trigger happy cops in America right now, yes I said that without apology. panzerabwerkanone good observation. In early 80's I was a gunner using the m60. I cant recall going thru a full belt without a jam up. Maintained the weapon but always jammed.

That would’ve been a good detail. Not so much for the accuracy (I don’t get the impression this film was interested in that sort of detail) but for the fact that it would have given them a chance to reconsider, or stop, but if instead Fishburne just cleared the jam and carried on it would have been even more chilling how they were so dead set that they’d just carry on...

Just before this scene, Willard examines a photo of Kurtz, seated and backlit to the extent that he’s almost unrecognizable. After Willard shoots the Vietnamese woman he sinks into a crouch, and as the screen fades to black, he becomes a dark figure we cannot know or fathom, just like Kurtz.

This scene was the pivot point of the plot. Up until then, the allusion of the possibility of going back was there, after this, the point of no return was reached. Willard calcified that with his cold hearted act.

There was something always a bit off about how Chef handled the puppy once he picked it up. I think a more natural reaction (especially after people were unjustly killed) was to pick it up with more force while showing rage and animosity. The puppy will be fine. It's a paid actor.

I am only theorizing here. But I feel the dog was a huge symbolic image in the film. A puppy to me is the ideal image of innocence. I remember when I first saw the film when I was younger and being so bumped out about the dog dying/gone missing. Watching this film again makes me look at the image of the dog more differently, when the dog dies/goes missing I see it as the death of safety of innocence in the film especially since its close to the death of the youngest character. Now I'm not saying my theory is certain but it's definitely something to think about. Let me know what y'all think.

That's an interesting observation, but I've always thought it was Lance who embodied innocence best in the movie (which is why he demands the puppy.) We see him having fun, taking drugs, goofing around and otherwise being a big kid. He's the only character other than Willard that survives and I always felt like that innocence is what saw him through the horrors of the film while the other crew members succumb to the insanity.

@@Hereticked Lance was almost casualty of the Heart of Darkness. Notice his transformation. The camouflage paint is the kicker. Lance wear the same paint. The only other people to wear that paint is Kurtz, when he cuts off Chef's head, and Willard when he kills Kurtz. Lance was going native very quickly. Once Kurtz dies the Heart of Darkness transfers over to Willard. Willard can handle it though. He's conscious of the madness of War. He takes Lance with him and they go home. That's the difference between Kurtz and Willard and in a sense Colby. ( you'd have to watch the 5 and 1/2 hr Rough Cut with the edited scenes with Colby to see that part.)
