This song brings back so much mixed emotions for me. Great song, rock at its best. But I served in US Army 1966-1968 and was very active in anti-war movement; the insanity then captured in this song hurt so deep…. And so much anger. I am 77 years old now, same emotions. I am glad Stones captured the mood and raw emotions.

To be fair, this movie wasn't supposed to encapsulate the Vietnam experience, just like the Godfather isn't really about the mafia. Edit: And full disclosure, I'm not American. I'm British and the Vietnam 'experience' seems to be much like my own grandfather endured in Burma fighting the Japanese in WW2. There are plenty of movies that portray the hell of war, and thank God I'll never have to engage in jungle warfare, but this movie definitely isn't about that.

@@nickcs4488 The 79 award winning release did the rounds, til the “directors cut” craze of the 90’s. It was only an extra 1/2 hour or so of footage. The extra hour (or more), with the bunnies in fridges, swapping fuel for sex, (can see why that was cut, with the continuity problems, it creates?), and original heart of darkness plot line, of Belgians in the jungle, only appeared 20 years or more later. You prolly don’t know what I’m talking about, We are talking vhs tapes, from target in the 90’s. (It used to be the predominant version on tv?). The one I’m thinking of, came out about the same time (or on the coattails of), the Hearts of darkness doco. The book was 1st year English lit, back in the day. (This song ain’t in it anyway?, how did we end up here?).

The epitome of a rock and roll song. Perhaps the greatest ever written. It captures the essence of whatever it’s being applied to, whether it be film, photo, or whatever your mind is conjuring up the moment it begins to play. It’s as if the song has a spell on it and knows what you need it to be every time you hear it. How fitting that it would be the Stones at the root of it.

Both our boyfriends were in Vietnam, her's in the army, mine in the marines. My cousin's boyfriend had just gotten home from Nam. Our friend's husband had just been killed there. The start of Gimme Shelter conjures up an emotion that's burned in my brain forever... the charmed exuberance of our carefree youth overshadowed by the constant specter of death. That war was about keeping your buddies alive. Nobody really cared about ideology once they were in country.

Was never a war song, but the relationship between Keith's girlfriend Anita Pallenburg & Mick Jagger as they made the film Performance. This song was written by Keith about his inner turmoil about them filming together. Anita liked to push boundaries & Mick was priapic. The lyrics about " just a shot away " meant a camera shot, the " pain, children " lyrics was because Keith & Anita had a little boy named Marlon.

This song was NEVER about war. Keith Richard's wife was making a film with Mick Jagger, called Performance. Keith knew what Anita Pallenburg , his girlfriend was capable of & how she loved to push boundaries & he also knew priapic Mick .He suspected they were having an affair as they made the film & that explains the " shot away " lyrics, it's referring to a camera shot & the " " pain, children " in the lyrics was because Keith & Anita had a little boy called Marlon. Keith wrote the song about the inner turmoil he felt about it all. It's in Keith's autobiography Life. It has always been rumoured however, that Anita & Mick did have sex during the making of the film. So NOT & NEVER was a war song !

You and me both, bro... while I grant that the Beatles were the catalyst of the '60s music revolution they were too "clean" (so parents could accept them) and most of their early music was little more than bland, sanitized makeovers of R & B or cutesy teen romance songs. The Stones on the other hand were anything but "clean" (once they were arrested for urinating on a gas station wall...), parents hated them and THEIR early music was gutsy and raw interpretations of R & B and blues classics (the Beatles never made a special trip to the Chess Records studio; the Stones did). I agree that they reached their pinnacle with the album Let it Bleed (a deliberate poke at the Beatles acquiescent song Let it Be) and specifically the song Gimme Shelter which so perfectly captured the zeitgeist of the mid and late 1960's.

I beg to differ regarding the Stones playing catch-up to the Beatles. As I noted in the previous comment, the Beatles early music was little more than cutesy teen-love songs and R&B covers that were sanitized for white teenagers (and their parents). The change came in 1965, after they began experimenting with LSD, when they released their first musically interesting album "Rubber Soul" which to my mind was their best album. After that they abandoned cutesy teen songs and gave up ruining soul, R&B and blues songs and instead began to focus musically on the emerging hippie culture, while also becoming increasingly involved with the production and recording aspects. The pinnacle was the album "Sergeant Pepper" which was considered the first "concept album" in rock 'n roll (and quickly imitated). The album contained mosty forgettable songs but there were several interesting ones, with "A Day in the Life" being the most interesting. While the album was essentially a producer/studio engineer's wet dream it did have quite an impact on rock 'n roll. @TC787-yq7og . I definitely agree with you regarding the Stones image. In the late 60's and early 70's the counter-culture was constantly hungry for new musical icons after being let down by their idols time and again. The Stones, with their rebel stances, reputations and radical (and occasionally satanical) lyrics, seemed to fit the roll and they were certainly happy to play along. Ironically, they never considered themselves as radicals or leaders of the counter-culture; at the end of the day all that remained of their counter-culture image was lots and lots of money (for them..) @@TC8787-yq7ogpo

I was lucky not to serve. My number was just high enough to not get drafted. I protested the war. Tons of us protested the war. We protested the war, not the men and women who actually did the fighting. Those who served never got the honor and respect they had earned, especially because so many of them served (and paid the price) because they were forced to by the government. Gimme Shelter fit both those who fought the war and those who protested the war. But I'm always reminded of another Stones song, Memo from Turner, that includes the line "and the young men do the fighting while the old men all look on" (originally an Albert Einstein quote). That was true of Viet Nam and just about every other war, even justifiable wars liked WWI and WWII. I thank all of you who served. You were extraordinarily brave. I also thank those who protested. Had they not, the slaughter might have gone on much longer.
