APM Bixler Auto Takeoff Auto Landing McMillian Park - Uncut

Ғылым және технология

GoPro Hero 2 footage taken from my Bixler UAV flying over McMillian Park in Huntsville, AL. For those who are wondering why the nose of the camera seems to move independently of the camera: The camera is not on a gimble. KZread detected that my original footage was shaky so they asked if I wanted to stabilize it. The end result of the stabilization was that the terrain and sky are smooth but the nose of the plane appears to move independently of the camera.

That's pretty impressive! I'm to scared to let my skywalker fly itself... what method did you use to tune the nav controller enough to convince you that APM could handle the work?

hagfelsh I went with the default params at first, then followed the official procedure for tuning roll and pitch. admittedly, it was uneasy the first few times I switched to full auto and watched the plane sail away under the control of the apm! after dozens of flights you build confidence in the platform and in your plane.

very good mission! I'm building my bix3 with apm2.8. Could you say me which Esc (brand and model) you used? I've had a lot of problem with a quad using Emax... Thank you!

Andrea De Magistris I think the ESC on this Bixler was a 40 amp HobbyKing ESC. Nothing special, but it worked very well for dozens of flights

Did you use any sensors for this landing? Does it have to sound and airspeed? I put last point height 0 and place as land?

there were no auxiliary sensors for this landing - just the GPS on board the APM. To help make a smooth approach, I lined up several waypoints for the approach path, being careful to maintain a gentle rate of descent. its' been awhile since I've flown with this model, but If I'm not mistaken, you can set your last waypoint to a LANDING mode. All altitudes are set and executed relative to the "home" location, which is usually where you first power on the plane and acquire GPS lock. So if you want to land in the same area where you take off, you can use 0 for the landing altitude.

Do you have a gimbal on the Bixler? The camera seems to be stabilising itself in the video.

Kevin Kanzelmeyer No more expensive brushless gimbals, KZread - the best fpv gimbal, haha )))

Hi Kevin, I would love to try auto landing, but still not sure how APM would behave. My airfield is quite narrow, just the size of the soccer field. There is trees on three sides (about 7 meter height) and a road with electric poles on behind. Can I put the landing point on the middle of soccer field, and the last way point is 100m away from soccer field with 100m altitude?

Hi Paulus - I think the width of the soccer field is no problem. If I were you I would add a waypoint at end of the soccer field above the trees at 15 meters to safely avoid the trees. That would give you about 60 meters to glide in gently for a landing maintaining a -15 degree pitch. [ 15 m/sin(15 deg) ] Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Do you have some saved mission from mission planner that I can study? I will maiden it with APM this week.
