Prototype Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Assembly with Solder Paste, Solder Stencil, and Toaster Oven

Just a little home-brew printed circuit board (PCB) production. Admittedly it's a small circuit that could be done with through hole components, but I wanted to try making my own PCBs! This process is well suited for prototyping and small scale production.
The printed circuited boards PCBs came from OSH Park.
The solder stencil came from OSH Stencils. I've used OSH Park and OSH Stencil for several projects and I've been 100% pleased with each of their results.
The solder paste is Kester EP256. The toaster oven used for the re-flow was a normal toaster over. It was purchased from Kohls. I followed the re-flow temperature profile listed in the Kester EP256 datasheet.
If you've never tried to make your own boards for fear of the unknown, let me assure you - if I can do it, so can you. OSH Stencils provides an affordable kit to get started with solder stenciling, and they include a solder paste spreader with every order.

Everything on very TOP professional level, very neat job, but you miss the basics of soldering! My heart was torn in pieces while seeing you using that "poker"!!!

+duncho his solder is just fine, he forgot to use lotfett, and yeah controlable solder temperature is necessary for sensitive ic, must read the datasheet first. btw nice job, i want to buy mini oven and dilemmatic about choosing single heater like kevin used or double heater on very side oven to prevent direct heat, and your video can be my inspiration

duncho it is clear you have not watch assembly lines in China where they use plumbers soldering irons to do the finest soldering on small smd chips.

What happened to the sound, no description what exactly were some of the products and where you get them. Need a least audio description or a caption describing what some of these procedures are. Did You Tube delete the audio because there were some background music?

Hello Kevin, one question.. I would like to know how do you do the small holes in the paper or foil in order to apply the solder paste on it? What kind of paper or foil do you use? Thank you

That Soldering job was sexy, I'm not that bad myself but i mostly just solder wires, that damn near consistent solder was mesmerizing to watch.

Good video. Cool stuff. Nice way to to it at home. The title was a but misleading for me. I thought you were producing the PCB's themselves. Not doing an at home wave solder.

Adding a little flux will prevent those kinds of pointy solder. Even though the solder is flux cored, sometimes it will not be enough

For that many components, wouldn't it have been easier to do thru hole? Or just heatgun the crap out of it?

  • @KevinKanzelmeyer

    @KevinKanzelmeyer

Chuck Norris through hole could have worked but I wanted to try surface mounted! the solder paste has a specific heat sequence to ensure proper bonding. the heat gun may have worked but it would have been harder to control the temperature over time.

This kind of simplistic circuits do not need to be manufactured professionally if used for own purposes of course if it is cheap than ya.

Thanx for the video Kevin. I think your solder paste is too thick. For small series stencils are OK, while you may want to use solder paste dispenser, for PCB prototyping. Check this USB powered solder paste dispenser project on Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/2129383335/i-extruder-smart-air-free-solder-paste-and-fluids Regards

They use stencil when they have to paste many pads. In this case using a toothpick would be less time, and zero plus cost. You have 4 smd components and 3 of them are resistors, they are pretty big, could be hand soldered too easily.
