Aperture Desk Job Made Me Miss The Old Valve

Ойындар

In today's video, I discuss Valve's latest game in the form of Aperture Desk Job which functions both as a tech demo for the Steam Deck and a spin off from the Portal universe but most importantly how it acts as a reminder of how Valve's unique form of game development has seemingly slipped into obscurity.

Piggybacking on Erik's remark, most of old guard Valve are already gone, and those who remained had concentrated power onto themselves as to create an invisible chain of command. Hopefully these people would realize they'd be, like Erik said, too old to make games, soon, and get together to make that "one last Half-Life game" before that time comes. In some ways it's already too late; some of the voice actors are already dead.

Well, it's Valve. Through the history they always deliver us something new and technologically advances. They never want to dissapointed US (thats why HL source largely forgotten and Artifact was just miscalculation from their part, but still a deicent card game with interesting mechanic). Even if they rarely make games they still care about their fanbase. And i'm not about modmakers (but it's still impressive that they let sell mods as games, even if they are garbage like Hunt dow the Freeman). Gabe himself let Chalkateers (song "Count to 3") work with Glados herself - Ellen McLain (she is precious and you all should look behind the scenes of the song, i think even if she didnt restrict by her contract, she gladly play Glados again for free in projects like that song). So, for me it means more that Valve still appreciate US, even if sometimes they do questianble things.

However it's still sad to see that, because of this, games like Team Fortress 2 get left in the dust, a game loved by it's community, more specifically, a community that feels neglected and ignored by Valve. It doesn't help that Valve never seems to properly communicate with any game's community.

Good video. You should read "The Final Hours of Half-Life Alyx", in it Robin Walker talks about how their projects get lost in "the wilderness", and how Alyx was only really possible because he forced everyone to drop their other work and come together on a full length singleplayer game. So I think whether we see Valve games in the future will depend on people like Walker and whether they can wrangle enough staff to drag Half-Life 3 or Portal 3 out of the wilderness.

  • @limespots

I agree with the sentiment that so many people here have expressed before saying that them not churning out content and taking time with other projects is ultimately better for them in the long run. Even in their work ethic (seems more chilled if anything, which is its own detriment), you can obviously tell from their games that they care about the quality over it than the quantity. Seeming that nearly every game I can count from Valve thus far has been extremely well received by the general public and has even managed to wiggle itself into pop culture, I honestly don't mind that they don't do the same as before. Even if it takes a long, long while for Valve to get their shit together to make another game, original, spin-off, sequel or not, they still have the passion for their games, and oddly enough their worth ethic allows for that passion to flow between projects as well. I'd rather Valve be that one game company with long moments of inactivity only to release fantastic masterpieces every now and then, rather than them practically be like Nintendo where you can tell they just try and churn out stuff to have money going for them.

i definitely think that part of why they haven’t done Portal 3 is because, at it’s core, Portal is a series about GLaDOS and Chell, whose story came to a perfect end in Portal 2. but ffs man id be totally fine with a less story driven game in this universe. make it a prequel or something, or maybe in this (presumably) alternate version of Aperture we see in Desk Job. personally i would love to go through a whole game with Grady filling the companion role kinda like Wheatley did

While valve games are always incredible when they do eventually put them out, being a valve game fan lately feels a lot like poking a dead rat with a cattle prod. Sometimes it twitches, and it's rad because "ooh, the dead thing moved!!" But the rest of the time you just feel like you're only there out of morbid curiosity, wondering when you'll get tired of changing the batteries while people tell you that you really should stop

Part of the magic of Valve games, and at the same time a big part of the problem with them, is that Valve tends to only release games they're proud of. That's not to say that they've never made a bad game, of course. But Valve doesn't churn out yearly releases or endless sequels long after the magic is gone. They don't release broken games early because they really need a game out for the holidays. Because of how Valve is structured, you know that they release something there were at least a FEW people working there that were really passionate about it. But in the end, Valve's standards are perhaps a bit too high. Of course no one wants blatant cash-grabs, but I'm sure quite a few of us would be more than happy to see some sequels to our favorite Valve games, even if they're a little derivative and don't add that much. If we got a Portal 3 that was little more than just a Portal 2 map pack, I'm sure tons of people would still love it.

They wouldn’t even have to add any crazy new mechanics, I just don’t understand it made sense why they were hesitant around a decade ago when hype for their sequels was at an all time high. But now nobody’s hyped, we’re just sad and disappointed that one of the greatest developers of all time stopped making games.

I played this demo expecting a simple tutorial on how to use my Deck and in 30 minutes I was sucked so deep into the story and experience of everything I was looking at it, more so than most AAA games could ever hope to achieve. I experienced moments of gasping, laughter, suspense... **FFS! This was just a 30 minute tech demo to show off how the controls of the deck work!** Valve can achieve all of that with a FUCKING TECH DEMO. And their games? The last narrative game we got from Valve was Portal 2 and the ending was so good I weep, tears of joy. Valve basically reached the point of being 'so good at making games they got bored of it' and decided to try something harder, literally, in the sense that they switched to hardware. It's kinda insane to think Valve is possibly the greatest game developer on the planet - and they don't make games.

I think the best idea is to have a mix of the two as it's still possible to make a great game because you have to, but making the dev cycle really stressful for devs makes the end result not fun.

I think the chances of seeing Portal 3 or the title "Half Life Ep3" are zero and impossible sadly at this point. Portal 1/2 released a long time ago in terms of game dev/writing and I'd like to see that same story/vibe come back but in reality it would come back with others inspirations and visions. It would be a slightly morphed reflection of the older titles doing its best to makes its own name while not over reaching into the past. Alyx did this well by basically ditching the old timeline and Gordon. If we want more Portal I fear it will also come in an alternative form but not directly the same universe. The Half-life universe is alive and strong but the original soul of them is gone. I wouldn't even be that obverse to seeing a Half life 2 rewrite from Valve. I know that sounds insane to some but Alyx kind of did this with good praise and with a new baseline for what "half life" can be as a game we could get more.

honestly I dont think it did enough to show off the Decks controls. Yes it has you touch everything once, but looking at your footage in this video I can tell you did stick only aiming - no gyro or even track pad. The fact it can be played even with a xbox controller means it inherently isnt doing much to really highlight everything the Deck can do. There comes a point when backwards compatibility has a massive... not quite chilling but probably more accurate to say "non warming" effect on innovation. Would have loved to see a wave survival mode where there is a difficulty spike past level 10 and every time you die before said spike without using gyro Grady suggests giving gyro a go. Add an online leader board and watch as gyro players rise to the top while non gyro players struggle. Or, more extremely... once Grady says "gyro" every non gyro method of controlling the game camera gets turned off (even desktop mouse). Yes that would cause controversy... but controversy happened when Half Life 2's physics were so demanding it forced people who otherwise gamed without one to get a gpu. You are right; I miss the Valve that actually pushed the industry forward instead of carefully tip-toeing around (the Steam Controller is legit the best pc gaming peripheral in controller form and no one can change my mind on that).

The funniest thing about Valve is that they bought a studio and then put that studios game on hold, ostensibly to make Half-Life: Alyx, but even now its on hiatus. They literally saw a good, engaging, narratively driven single-player game and liked it enough to buy the entire studio... and then had those developers work on Dota and STEAM. It's like Valve actually hates first-person single-player games and goes out of their way to stop people from making them.
