APC Back-UPS 450 battery backup supply teardown

Ғылым және технология

Due to power interruptions, I decided it was time to get an uninterruptable power supply for my PC. As typical with me, I did in the cheapest fashion. Let's tear it down to see what we might find on the inside.

I don't have one of those, but it might be a good idea just in case, but then again, luckily for me, the AC power here is pretty reliable.

I have one like that that I keep the TV & PS4 plugged in it cuz whenever we have storms we get some power outages for seconds sometimes. It’s been beeping continuously and when I press it for 2sec it turned off not an alarm mute! Does that mean I have to replace the battery? Thanks.

This unit uses a 12V @4.5A battery, so max power is 56Watts, unit advertise for 255Watts max, so this is 4 to 5 times what this tiny battery can supply. I replaced the battery with an external 12V @40A Lifepo4 battery with the wires going out of the unit. It can now supply a 255W load for 1.88 hours, almost 2 hours. Great video bro.

No issues with the internal BMS charging the 40A? How long does it take to charge? And what's the model battery of the 40a?

We have one of these, and it woke me up with a loud constant tone the other night. I'm assuming the battery is shot. Just bought a replacement on Amazon. Hope it does the trick. I believe the manual says that the battery check happens every two weeks.

I have one of these powering a number of audio visual, cable modem, and wireless router functions for much the same reason you purchased yours. Last month the thing just went dead, and I was all irritated about how I had just bought this thing and then it just up and quit, until I looked at the receipt, still taped to the case, which showed a date over 5 years ago....so yeah...think I got my $40 worth....

Interesting video John, thank you. I'll join the rest of the comments and say, please consider Linux. I did 10 years ago and never looked back. I use a popular Linux Mint Mate 19.1 it's very look and feel Windows-like. It's probably best to keep away from their latest cutting edge versions - if you want an easy life :) Try a none commital Live Disc/Stick image, and if you like - dual boot to feel your way in. And, please folks don't forget a small Linux donation to keep their oil lamps burning :) All the best, Beamer.

You can extend the backup time by adding another similar battery in parallel. Or you can use a car battery or a deep cycle agm battery or a Lithium battery. Lots of videos are available in KZread.

Woah! DO NOT DO THIS if you expect to use the inverter at higher powers. The circuit is NOT heatsinked sufficiently to deliver high power for a long time. It will overheat and die. The standard battery within will only last a few minutes at high output powers, which is enough to raise the temperature, but before it gets too hot, the internal standard battery will be done.

I had to rummage around in my screwdriver collection until I found one long enough, and thin enough to get in there and remove the screw. I had one from a Craftsman screwdriver collection I bought years ago. Might have been the first time I ever used it.

I didn't see anything in your desktop icons that you couldn't be doing in Linux. When the power fails in Linux journal recovery happens pretty quickly. You don't have to connect to anything fancy to run Linux either. There's some software you definitely need Windows for. But if you're not using it then I don't see any reason why anyone would. Power fails here all the time. A bad shut down adds like 2 seconds to my boot. It's not a big deal.

One reason to my switch to Linux was its hyper speedy shutdown in less than 10 seconds (4 seconds from ideal). While Windows 7 took about 20 to 30. Which is lots of time running on old UPS.

This model, after the electricity goes off, it stays on for only 2 hrs and 20 minutes, EVEN WITHOUT ANY LOADS. This unit comes with a 12V 4.5AH battery, so I added in parallel a 12V 35AH battery to it, that makes it a 12V 39.5AH unit. It's supposed to last 5 hours without electricity for what I'm using it for(about 90 Watts), but it doesn't. At first I thought it was overheating with the load I was putting it through, so I tried very light loads, like 10 Watts, and it would still shut off at 2 hrs and 20 minutes, so I tried it without any loads whatsoever... same thing. Does anybody knows how to override this?

Apc really cutting cost these days. They could have easily used a 7.2ah battery . those are like 15 & 20$ in here new from reputed manufacturer. , Although i like the high frequency inverter design those are much more efficient than the 20yr old one i have with a heavy ass transformer .. those things consume a lot of reactive current on idle and drain the battery quickly. The output could be made pure sine wave with a slightly more complicated controller and filters . They already had the H bridge. My old ups had removable battery newer ones at similar price makes u take apart the entire thing.

@@SupremeRuleroftheWorld car battery is a bad idea. Car battery will die within 10 to 20 discharge cycles. They are not ment for deep discharge their plates are spongey and have high surface area to give that high surge current required for cranking an engine. If u discharge your car battery few times it will not take charge . Better use a battery that's made for the purpose or lithium iron phosphate if power outage is a regular thing.

@@KuntalGhosh whut? car batteries will last for years. the load is extremely low and you will never see full cycles with a setup like this. but i agree that lifepo4 is the superior choice. but the voltages ACP uses are a bit "off" for that. you need 24 or 48V UPsses to get the right voltage to float a lifepo4.

@@SupremeRuleroftheWorld nope. They don't have much capacity. & They are not made to be cycled. Like if u discharge them to the levels of what a normal ups battery is subjected to it will die within months of regular use. I have done this personally when the backup ups of my server room died and i had to use the battery of my car which was like a year old and it died within few weeks of regular discharge cycles. Which is about 1hr on battery power and then the backup genarator takes over this puts down the battery to 40% charge level. I currently have 1 * 180ah battery cus power is so reliable my batteries die without even being cycled like 50times. Last time i replaced my ups battery it had like 5 or 7 power cuts on it on a span of 4yrs. 10yrs ago power backup was super important cus we had regular power cuts of Atleast 2hrs.

@@KuntalGhosh you do know that APC overcharges batteries on purpose right? you need to put a diode on the battery charger output to lower the voltage by 0.5V. that will stop the battery from cooking itself to death.

Switch to Linux and Microsoft will never bother you again with its nonsense, and it's way faster than MS Winblows. It shuts down faster and doesn't go to "recovery mode" when the power goes out. When I use Windows it's like it has got a mind of its own and impedes everything I wanna do. With Linux it just does whatever I tell it to.
