Weve had issues with the management card being brain dead. While APC repalces them fairly readily (We suspect they know there is a bad batch in the world) its is a source of frustration because it means we have to keep an inventory of 10 extra card in case they down't work on initial setup or to replace one that are no longer able to be contacted. We now do a daily test to confirm their operation and a 24 hour burn-in test for initial setup..

Great Video ! Have the APC Smart-UPS 1500 mini tower with the LEDs... The lights flicker and my web connection stays up and running ! Only two batteries in the mini tower and the 1500 rack has four batteries and a house plug. Think the UPS is mounted on a "L" Shelf... Also have an APC PDU that is plugged into two UPSs. (Just a little bit of OverKill). Have been window shopping for a 1500 Rack UPS... And yours looks great ! Also like the Keystone Patch Panel that is at the top of your rack. tjl

Possibly! I'm going to moving in late June so I'm currently waiting to get things perfectly setup. I will probably be starting fresh around then with some new gear so keep your eyes out for it.

@11:30 when you did disconnect the power I didn't hear any beeping sound from the ups ! it stays silent it doesn't warn you that you are on the battery power? or its a setting you can have it on or off? also @10:23 you turn it on , the first fan noise was the ups , the 2nd fan huge noise was other equipment? why I ask all these because I have my rack in my bedroom so I want to try to make it quiet and I will hear beep when power goes down I have time to get of bed to switch the servers off etc..

I've had a couple of non rack mount APC UPS systems and have always found the batteries never lasted, we don't have a lot of power outages either. Anybody else?

home UPS systems are designed to protect not last . so you probably only get 15 minutes of run time off of the battery i'm betting where as this RM style is 90lbs and lasts an hour with 20 percent load.

Gracias

Hey, that's cool, just wondering about noise, when this UPS is in standby (waiting for power failure) can you hear any fan noise? I expect the fans come on when there's a powercut.

There is an ever so slight hum but I can't really hear it specifically over my R210II or my 3750E. Now if this was going to sit in a room that was silent I'm sure there is some noise. I will take a closer listen later and get back to you. Thanks for the comment!

Quick question about your r210 ii, it's a small server so does it need rails for it to be mounted? I'm thinking about creating a homelab and putting my pc's into rackmount chassis.

An R210 II needs rails to be installed into a 2-post or 4-post rack.

Yeah what lildigiman said. The best place to get them is through dell, they are refurbished though. You can't just secure it using the front ears if that's what you're getting at.

AFK Tech Ok that's good to know. Also I'm thinking of moving all my servers into the Norco RPC 231 and was wondering if I can install a standard atx power supply with the fan on the top, I know it supports it but my concern is that the fan is blocked by the top of the chassis, is this ok?

Eh, it's not the best situation. If there is some clearance and you can get a fan to draw air in from the front of the case to push into the gap then I wouldn't be too worried about it. If it's REALLY tight and you can't get air forced to the PSU fan gap then I would look into a different style PSU that has a straight through airflow design.

So I got the UPS w/o batteries for $120 shipped off of eBay. It also happened to come with a management card which is about $60 separate. I then had to purchase batteries and a tray which was $170. If you get one that has a tray and wiring harness though you can put new batteries in for ~$100. So all in all if you wanted to replicate this right now without waiting for a good deal it would probably be around $300-400. Thanks for the comment, if you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask.

My technical experience is simply trial and error as I am not a professional. I mostly get by with a common sense approach and the process of elimination. Here is my issue and I hope someone can help. A friend gave me a APC 1500 SMART UPS. It is a SMX1500RM2U. It powers up but the display is showing "Warning State: Connect Battery". The batteries are connected and fully charged. There are 6 12 volt batteries holding a total of around 51 volts. Also checked the internal battery connector for any corrosion or loose connections. All is good there. The thing that is strange is that as soon as you pull the plug from it, the UPS stays running as it switches to the batteries indicating that the batteries are working fine. Again, when it's plugged in to 110 volts the display give that warning to connect the batteries. Anybody got any ideas on what might be going on with this unit and how to fix it? Many thanks. Jeff T.
