JamieJamez very true but consider how difficult it is to fit 8 different chargers, 16 batteries, 4 cameras, two cellphones, tripod, stabilizer, flash cards, laptop, drone and all your clothing into one medium size carry-on bag. I do it but it's not easy and it wears you out carrying it around as a backpack. So.... you can't bring everything.

Best summer festival in Japan? I'd beg to differ. I much preferred the Tachineputa festival in Goshogawara with their 7 story tall floats - you should check out that one next time. :3 Bit of background for everyone else (i was an exchange student in Hirosaki for a year and got to participate in Hirosaki's Neputa): The neputa festivals were originally a form of *legal protest (since it wasn't illegal to throw a festival) against the oppression of their feudal lords, taking inspiration from the Chinese texts Water Margin and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The big warriors are inspired from the 108 heros from those tales etc who stood up against government oppression in China. They were originally all the same festival, but after WWII, the Japanese government required each town to register their 'unique' cultural properties. Since there could be no one 'Neputa' they took advantage of regional accents to name them all slightly differently, and took on specific icons/styles. In Aomori, the Nebuta festival is very commercial - companies pay to sponsor floats, which take on the 3D design. In Hirosaki, the Neputa festival is done by local community groups. Every school, many clubs, etc etc where ever there is a collection of people there's probably a group who will make a float together. The locals practice for the entire month leading up to it too. While I enjoyed the event, I very much regret living next to an elementary school while they practiced flutes and Taiko drums all July. Still, it was an awesome atmosphere to have the whole city involved. It was like when people start Christmas in November. As for style, they typically make flat, shell-shaped floats with paintings on their 2D surfaces. On the front is typically a fearsome warrior who goes away to fight, while on the back, there is typically a lonesome and sad looking lady who was left behind. Their chant is "Yaaa ya douuu". In Goshogawara, the Tachineputa is done by the local government. They officially hire craftsmen to make 7-story high floats over the 10 months prior to the festival. They also keep a few of the previous year's floats in a museum that you can visit all year round rather than burning them on the last night like in the other festivals. Their chant is "Yattemare yattemare yattemare yattemare" with a few "sore"'s mixed in. All parade down the streets for about a week, with slightly staggered start dates, so you can go see a different one each night. Though they trains are very crowded even though they have more carriages and and trains than usual.

Those floats and the drum music 🎶 awesome floats. Joined in the live stream a little before the Frenchman in the procession, I could see the energy was gathering momentum and then 1:25 my fave float ! 👍👍 will you be going to the festival every year ?

It's just fantastic. Japanese know how to relax. I do not understand how it is possible so long banging drums ... =)). Feeling how you participate in it. Thank you, great video. Это просто фантастика. Умеют в Японии расслабляться. Не пойму как можно так долго стучать в барабаны ... =)). Чувство как сам в этом участвуешь. Спасибо , отличное видео.

I've always wondered if they would ever embed speakers around the front of the drums to magnify the drums louder. Even at 1:36:16 the cat on that person shoulder. BTW there were some good looking chicks you got on your camera, you should have interviewed some of them when they were over your shoulder waving at the camera.

The comment feed on the show is fast - I have to focus on my environment and not the screen - there is a lot of trolling anyway but someone who super chats me wouldn't waste money with insults and I should stop and read anything from someone who has supported the show so I always try to answer. It's a nice feature to help my do this job full time. By next year, I'll be doing this full time thanks to super chat / Patreon and fan support.
