I got sick of rewatching the video so I made a text version: queue 4 villagers, build two houses. have 6 villagers on sheep. build lumber camp with 7th villagers, have 4 total on lumber. 11th villager builds a house, then lures a boar. Harvest boar. 12th builds a mill, harvest with the next 2. 15th builds a house, then gathers berries. 16th lures the second boar. 17th, 18th, and 19th build farms. 20th goes to lumber. 21st builds a house, then a farm. 22nd on wood, 23rd builds new lumber camp. 24th also to wood. Reassign a shepherd to build a farm. 25th builds a gold mine, 26th goes to mine gold. Reassign a shepherd to gold.

i don't get ist. the 11th one build a house, lures the boar and according to your summary harvests the boar. in the video however- even though at 6:35 it seems as if you're right, 4 men and 3 woman are around the boar - aber he cuts to his scout and back to the town center, there's only 6 people harvesting the boar - 4 men and 2 woman. where's the third woman gone (the one that hided in the town center)? At 6:40 there's 4 on wood, 6 on the boar, 1 building a mill, 1 harvesting berries; the population reads 14/20, which is true according to the number of build villagers - but one is missing.

Why is this game from 1999 so fun? I'm not sure, but I am sure that I still suck at it.

After weeks of research and editing, I have completely remastered my Aoe2 tutorial on a Fast Castle Age into a Knight Rush! This time with a greater emphasis on the build order which was taken from a wide variety of expert games. :D With your help we can make this the go-to tutorial for new players and anyone looking to learn a competitive build. Each to their own, it's a relatively minor difference that can be avoided by doing the build order correctly as he said - a good timing means minimal loss to sheep decay, preferably none at all. You can make a lot more back from microing villagers from old sheep to new sheep, but this tutorial isn't for the most efficient dark age possible, that could be a seperate video if he wants to do that. There's *way* more small things you can do to improve efficiency.

Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart are also 100% situational (as Viper said when he was asked by ZeroEmpires a while back) for when you should get them, there is no perfect time. Every game is different.

I would rather have someone know what they were talking about with experience and actual game knowledge to back it up. Scenario tests are incredibly useless and the numbers they give you have no meaning, but you can enjoy the editing if you wish.

This is an excellent, well crafted tutorial. It goes through the build in depth, offers useful information in case deviation is necessary, and is simply all round thoughtful and well produced. I honestly can't think of a way to improve this tutorial short of an actual demonstrative multiplayer game with a well-executed knight rush in it tacked on at the end.

Thank you for making this video, it was really helpful. Personally though, I like to see everything happening in one game like your previous tutorial on booming. When there are so many cuts, I feel confused and have trouble figuring out what is going on onscreen every few seconds, taking away my focus on what you are saying. It's why I really enjoy hearing you explain things on stream, as I don't have to worry about not knowing what led up to your discussion. Great tutorial, the remastered version is a big improvement as it gives suggestions on where you can adapt throughout the build. As a new player I have watched this four times now to try perfect my build.

Definitely one of the best tutorials around.

This is by far the strategy that I most use, I have won more than I have lost whit this strategy, the only thing I do different from this tip is when the villagers finishes the berries, I send them to build farms, making at least 8 farmers in a total.. it is very efficient too, as I build 1 barrack plus 2 stables... great video, nice content!!!

Just wanted to say good job! I've been playing this game since I was about 7 years old and before that the original AoE but I never understood the concepts and depth of the economical system in the game and the moderate setting AI just felt unsurmountable. By watching your videos I've come to understand how to boom and while I've not fully mastered the knight rush strategy I can now utilize it well enough to actually beat the moderate AI 1v1. (Hooray for me, right?) I would request that you make some videos on how to defend against early game aggression as I feel that can really put a wrench in one's plans. Thanks for the great advice and keep making these informative videos!

Great tutorial :) I was looking for one as the flank/in an Arabia 1v1. I usually use a Drush first, but I don't know exactly when to put the villager on gold and create the Barracks. I just don't know the build order for a Drush Fast Castle, so it often doesn't work very well for me. Probably sometimes because I forget to scout my opponent and then I have no idea where to go. ;-; 1: I thought that the main reason we don't cut all of our straggler trees early on was so that we could have emergency trees to retask your vills to if your wood line gets raided? 2: Putting your Mill one tile away from forage bushes is not the best idea when the forage bushes are more clumped up, but when they are spread out it is more effective (as showcased by Spirit of the Law). 3: A tip for me here to other players: When you lure your second boar and the first one hasn't run out yet, FINISH THE FIRST ONE. Don't assign any vills to the second boar until the first boar has been depleted. This is because once you finish the first boar, there are less decaying animals, so you lose less food. 4: Deer luring is quite hard, but it's not THAT difficult. I have done it successfully a few times, albeit getting frustrated with stupid unit pathing a lot, and I'm not even a good player. Usually the Deer will run in a straight line away from your scout, only sometimes will it fuck up. No, the main reason why you shouldn't always deer lure is because your scout should always be scouting! You wanna find your opponent, and find all of your sheep. 5: Scale Barding Armor is better than Bloodlines against TCs and Archers, but Bloodlines and Forging help more against Spearmen.

What a fantastic tutorial!

Hi there, just a little information to this very, very good knight rush. If you have the boar lured and killed and there is still a sheep in the tc, put all vills on the remaining decaying sheep and 1 of them on the boar. It was surprising for me too but a video showcased every possible way to arrange them and 5-6 on sheep and 1 on boat was the superior one. If I'm not wrong it was one of spirit of the law's videos. It is so counterintuitive that almost everybody thinks focusing the boar is bettet (so did I before I saw the vid). Nice video anyways!

Blue Flash For a fast castle Spirit of the Law is correct that finishing the sheep is better. But for a fast feudal you do not want to do that, because while you might lose less food to decay, you’re gathering food slower when getting the sheep, meaning you might not have enough food to advantage to feudal age when you need to.

I think the idea is to minimise idle time as you transition from one food source to the other. If you had 10 sheep gatherers/hunters it would be difficult to efficiently re-task them when the food runs out

From the pocket team game position, yes it should almost always be Knights. If it is the Spanish, they could build a castle and go for Conquistadors, and that requires you to go up with another villager and have some stone miners, so you can afford a castle.

Can u replace 4 farmers by building a mill and hunt 3-4 deer with 4 villagers? Or is it suboptimal? So I mean, instead of luring the deer to your tc with your scout, build a mill nearby.

will this tutorial work for AOE2 def edition as well?

I would never see this as slow apm if I hadn't been watching TheViper lately.

At 6:55, you forgot to mention that the villager luring the second boar is the same that builds one of the two farms later on. Got me really confused since the numbers don't add up otherwise.

back in my day, you couldn't queue up extra farms!

How do you pump out knights upon hitting castle age whilst constantly producing a villager

The hurdle I face not just in AoE2 but all RTS's, be it Starcraft, C&C, or WC3 is tunnel vision. When I'm managing my base, that's where my mind stays. The same goes for army micro. When I try to switch from micro to economy (if I don't completely forget), then the gears in my mind start to jam, and it becomes hard to do anything at all. This phenomenon feels like mental blankness comparable to completely losing one's train of thought, and it's plagued me for years - to the point that I wonder if it's even possible for me to improve. In the case of this build, I think I will take notes and post them around my desk then drill myself on bots until I can jump from one building to another, queuing villagers while hunting, building, scouting, and adjusting my economy to where it feels comfortable as opposed to stretching my mental capacity to its limit and blanking out. I am not sure how much practice it will take, but I hope to develop some observable changes in muscle memory.

Does anyone know how to reduce the multiplayer lag? I am getting major delays in actions even when hosting and I have over 50Mbps and less than 24ms ping...

21:00 Markets dont generate exponentially more the further they are away from each other. The function describing yield is not exponential but a second order polynomial, 0.001x^2 + 0.1353x where x is the tile distance to be precise. For those who dont know: an exponential increase is defined as a function having the variable within an exponent, like 2^x. It does not change the conclusion, "Build markets far away from each other".
