    I have a question about mixing low end. I feel that this issue is divided into two camps. I often come across those who say you should cut 20-25hz on all tracks to remove the lowest frequencies for a better mix. While many say that you are keep all low frequencies and "only" remove the low ones if you have recorded disturbing frequencies from vocals and accustic instrument. So is there an absolute answer to this question, cutting off low frequencies or not? Personally, I keep the low frequencies and just clean out the low ones that don't add anything to the mix. I have tried to remove everything from 20-25hz and found the mix to be both thinner and flatter. Thank you for your great videos and yt-channel 👍😁

    Regarding limiters generally, I don’t think I’ve seen one where the main control is the output LUFS, which is a bit weird given that’s the main concern with limiting, and you can only play with it indirectly via input gain etc. Surely automatically setting the input gain for a desired output LUFS is something plugin manufacturers could do, and it’d make life a bit easier just putting in “-12dB” or whatever.

    Adrian Nakić I cant help but feel like this is a step too far. Most plugins provide metering and Input/output gain controls.... that HELPS, literally built into the plugin. Implementing something which allows you to practically abandon the practice, but clean up after you sounds like more of a hinderance in the long run. No-one learns if you do it for them!

    Tried it for the luls and I didn't find it very useful, it may be ok for more relaxed stuff that doesn't need to be very loud. The way the comp and limiter are both tied to the loudness knob made the compressor kick in far too much for the material I would use it for, it needs a seperate compressor threshold imo and the comp mix didn'y really help address this. To my ears it mangled the sound too much when trying to push higher volumes and was nowhere near what I could achieve with say Fabfilter Pro Q, Blackbox HG-2, Alpha Compressor & Invisible Limiter.

    Well the first thing for a good master would be a "mastering room" anyway. A quick master for the label? Ok. why not. A master for a client to approve a mix? I tell them to turn their volume up while listening to the mix. A limiter or any compression or any mastering tool.. you name it.. they will all alter the mix. So I guess it depends on the reason you reach for a mastering tool. And that tool would not be this one here :)) I agree with all you said in this video brother.

    I've been mixing my own songs for close to 10 years now and I kinda know what this was intended for....this is probably more for people who are just starting out and don't really have a clue about mastering to begin with. Like I personally would rather pay some services like Dolby / SoundCloud for their mastering services then to try a do it myself so to have these types of plugins to do it for you.....you the well it would know better than I would because it was built to do this so I can argue with it and these types of plugins are usually reasonably priced....id image to have some one like you who is a “ pro mastering engineer” to master a full LP would cost 600 to 1500 dollars ( money that most artist don't have) so I'm just saying that's why it's easy to get artist to buy these “shitty plugins”. It almost predatory in a way because with some of these types of plugins they know it is snake oil or they got the right idea but didn't do enough research on it... That's why I sorta am moving to modeled plugin because they are based on hardware that you know what to expect from them and you have something to reference

    Complaining about harmonics and you are getting 0 lufs.... It is hard to know with this thing when pushing it hard, but if you are aiming for -14lufs you just need a decent limiter unless your mix is screwed. Plenty of great limiters also sound terrible when limiting hard, no limiting amount meter here is annoying (unless that is what comp is but with a mix control I doubt it). Learning to use something like Ozone Elements is probably better, if you know how to mix you should be able to learn an equalizer and a limiter.

    Well i think its pretty clear what the plugin does, i think its a valid point of him to say that you should be able to intuitively use a Plugins main features without lookin it up in the manual beforehand. Thats the only reason why there are GUIs to begin with. Or was this comment not directed to this Plugin but more like generally to the channel? Because he has shown Plugins before where he looked stuff up in the manual, for this one its not necessary. If you have an "Analog" Button and a THD Poti on a mastering plugin, thats actually self explanatory. In this case, it just didnt work...

  • @Breakbeat90s

    @Breakbeat90s

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Stormbozz yes it was more directed generally to this channel, look at plugins like u-he presswerk most engineers probably need the manual to grasp all the functions and thats not a bad thing since they can always switch the GUI if they want to you also have the case of a plugin like ploytec aroma where they use "sweet sour" etc. as parameters because its more handy than just labeling them "33rpm tape emulation with a pultec like low bump at 30 hertz" or some bullshit, and just labeling them "saturation" would make no sense because the entire plugin and all the parameters saturate lol

  • @Stormbozz

    @Stormbozz

    4 жыл бұрын

    I havent heard of anyone being able to switch the GUI on Presswerk... Enlighten me if im wrong tho ;) and i dont think you would need a Manual for it either, the knobs also explain themselves. Keep in mind im talking about the main uses, not really diving into 100% of the functions. The ploytec one is not really a good example either, since you cant control anything on it... its just adding flavor (thats what saturation does i know) but not as precise as lets say Saturn from Fabfilter for example... No need for the manual here either, the approach Wytse has in his Snake Oil Vids would be the best, just turn it up and listen to what it does. No Manual can really explain the character and Sound of a Plugin, or even Hardware... otherwise there wouldnt be so many different variants of the same compressors out there.

    @@Stormbozz 1. regarding presswerks GUI: kzread.info/dash/bejne/daaisqmAgJu0YKg.html video is in german but you get the point just skip trough it "Keep in mind im talking about the main uses, not really diving into 100% of the functions." stop weasling out lmao 2. how does the RMS window knob exactly? what about the non lin knob next to the knee parameter? beginners and even self taught professionals probably won't know what feedback and feed forward is and thats okay, THATS WHY WE HAVE THE MANUAL HINT HINT :D 3. you cant compare aroma (wide band) with saturn (multiband), also my argument was not about a manual but wytses argumentation in regards to non-technical labels like a "sweet, sour, spicy" etc. parameter

    @@Breakbeat90s Oh lol, i havent seen you responded... Concerning 1: That is not the GUI that is changing, its different Modules inside of the GUI... I think you misunderstood what i meant... for Example Kontakt has the same GUI no matter what Library you load in. I wasnt weaseling out, i was just saying that if you load up eg. a Compressor, you should be able to Compress with it even if you didnt read the manual. Sidechaining options or other functions aside that, inside of the plugins, are more advanced features and sometimes require the manual. 2: FeedForward, FeedBack and INT are common modes you could have already seen on some analog Gear (or even in the workspace of an Electrician), but still those are Features i wouldnt necessarily call the "main function" of the Plugin. You can still compress without using it. 3: Saturn works as a wide Band Saturator aswell (Mastering Engineers use Saturn on Master Tracks for example, without defining Bands... so thats that) but you can still tweak more parameters than the ploytec one. My Point is still valid though, no Manual could explain either of those Saturations in audio terms. You just have to listen and decide if you like it.

    Don't you think there's kinds of music that this mastering is "enough" for?

    The more i try and hear remastering i realize its totally crap, its killing dynamics, reverb. Some EQ and some limiting is the most you can do without distroying the original. Learn to mix !!!! thats more important

    i'll just continue doing my demos/previews on Ozone. This has really not enough options nor does it "make your music automagically nice"...

    yea I just have used this to send a rough mix to my master engineer so he can get an idea of the track. Honestly would not use it to upload a song

    It's not made for a professional. It's meant for amateurs who don't want to read an instruction manual. I have IK's T-RackS 5 and only use the excellent metering plugin. Initial Audio - Mastersuite looks like it has just about every feature of T-RackS 5 One mastering plugin, but with out the learning curve. I think Initial Audio's mastering plugin should be $29.99 and not $49.99.
