Bought my i3 Mega in 2018, printed a bit but then stored it to take it out of the attic only a month ago, no upgrades, no nothing. I loaded it with filament (reasonably dry stored) I still had from back in 2018 and the machine runs without problem. It is slow, but it works. The i3 Mega re-ignited my interest in 3D printing and it is a great relatively inexpensive piece of kit. By the way great video!!

I've owned the i3 Mega for almost a year now and your videos have recently driven me to do some upgrades. Your videos are very well made and you seem to hit the right level of information to make these upgrades easy. It can be difficult to find the necessary information sifting through endless Thingiverse group comments. I just wanted to drop a comment to say thank you. I'll be tuning in for any new videos in the future. Keep up the great work!

This is year 3 with this printer. I haven’t had to make any updates / upgrades. It has been 100% reliable. Just bought a Vyper and a Kobra Neo.

Great review Charlie. I have had my i3 mega for over three years now, and apart from the really annoying issue of bed-levelling (come on Anycubic - get with it) it has been a gem. Done lots of printing in that time, but now - loke me - it is getting a bit aged and weary, so I am about to buy a new Anycubic Mega Pro - with the tmc2208 drivers. When I have that running, I am going to 'gut' my old i3 and do all the mods you have done. many thanks for your great, easy to understand, clear videos on this subject. Really short, sharp, and to the point - as it should be. On a slightly less positive note - I have to completely agree with you regards Anycubic Support. I can't say it is abysmal, appalling, or even atrocious - it is simply ABSENT. Like you I have tried on many occasions to get a response from Support, but they are always 'out to lunch'. really lets down an excellent company and excellent products. However, as you noted - plenty of people on the web who have had issues and gotten over them - like yourself - and who are willing to share their knowledge. Cheers Charlie.

Great to see how people solve problems and your solutions are top notch. I’ve been running one of these in the garage for four years and it’s my go to printer for small functional prints, for me it’s the little engine that could. I’m running mine stock but I should really replace the extruder as I broke the lever on mine being heavy handed. I don’t even level the print bed anymore, I’ll occasionally smear it with a glue stick and off I go. Honestly I can’t remember the last time I had a failed print (unlike their Chiron model!), it’s been a great little printer for the money. I use predominantly Ziro CF PLA so the I do occasionally have to change the print nozzle because of wear.

Great 1-year review! Have the i3 Mega and would agree with all of your pros and cons! You mention in your video of upgrading to Marlin 2.0, but I haven't been able to find a link for the Marlin 2.0 vs 1.1.9 for i3 Mega. Is there really an advantage to 2.0 vs 1.1.9? Thanks again!!

Just got my mega S a few months to pass my Covid time and it has been a lot of fun... trial and error but catching on... your videos are helpful for sure! I will be looking at how to upgrade mine as well as the noise in my tiny office is deafening. What is the case you have around yours? Is it for sound? Temperature control? Do you have a video that explains that?

GREAT VIDEO! Could you mention, which parts had the most wear, or eventually broke down/ off? I am trying to prevent that by trying to find spare parts to print, (like extruder gears), but UNFORTUNATELLY I am not being able to find any stl files or informations about that.

Where I live I have the chance to buy the Mega X for just around 280 USD. But it seems a bit old, doesnt it? Would the Vyper be a better option you think, even though it has smaller base plate and are more expensive? It's mainly as a birthday gift for my girlfriend who's into miniatures and been into 3D printing for a couple of years but right now her old first gen flashforge printer is broken.

  • @ModernHobbyist

Hey Guilherme, thanks for the comment! Honestly, the only tip I would tell you right off the bat, is to slow the initial print speed way down to ~15mm/s and 30mm/s travel speed. Sometimes, the nozzle can get a little over eager to get to the next location and it will rip the freshly laid filament right off the bed. Other than that, you should have no problems so long as you level the bed well! Thanks again for the comment, hope that helps!

If it’s in pretty good shape, I would think that’s a decent deal. These machines are good starters and they are easy to upgrade if you want!

In my opinion the heat bed wire connects are poorly designed. Stress on the wires during printing can impair the connections and lead to the printer failing to function. Replacing the bed with a generic one with better soddered connections was necessary. Likewise I found getting rid of the leveling screws and replacing them with silicone tubes greatly reduces the need for leveling over time.
