A magnificent piece. I wish I could tell him in person. Pity he was so swayed by his critics.

I first discovered Bruckner when I was 19 years old in 1980 while I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison music school. I was the auxiliary double bassist for the Symphonic Band. Yes, Band!! Wind Ensembles and Bands have double bass parts written in. It was the first movement of Bruckner's 4th and obviously it was a transcription for Band. After the first rehearsal, I promptly went to the record store and bought a Bruckner complete symphonies set by Chicago/Barenboim. I immediately became a Brucknerite. I've always come back to Sym. 0 and have always loved it. It was composed between his first and second symphony, yet he threw it away as a failed attempt. Over the past 37 years since I first heard it, I have found it to be quite unfortunate that it has had that moniker.

I was 20 years old in 1958 when I discovered his 9 th symphonie, and how older I became how more I loved all his symphonies, his masses and the marvelous string quintet.

Tout le "grand" Bruckner est déjà ici en gestation. Partition étonnante... Sans doute d'une originalité déconcertante pour l'époque où elle a surgi... Une premiere (seconde) des onze merveilles.

I've been watching all of your videos with the autograph scores. here's what I've noticed: Bruckner is a very economical orchestrator. Even in the much higher number symphonies, the same economy is evident. It's beautiful to study these originals because a modern score is printed with all parts, but the originals show the thought process. The missing doubled parts, the repeat signs (%), the cross-outs... it's all there. One can also learn orchestration and progress with Bruckner from symphonies 0 to 9. He's an orchestration course unto himself!

Comunque stupenda questa sinfonia ,nel suo complesso. C'e' il lirismo,la passione giovanile. Fantastico l'Andante, mentre lo Scherzo e' chiaramente delineato verso le successive sinfonie. Affascinanti i tempi estremi.

Harry Andruschak I'd pretty much dismissed #0. But you're right. This is the fourth time I've listened to it, I think. First time I've listened to it ! So beautiful. And all those building blocks are there. Bruckner can blow you away. And I love that. But now what I love most are those introspective, or deeply contemplative, and/or prayerful passages. Vastly overlooked.

This should be included in the set. Bruckner actually completed 10 symphonies with an unfinished 11th, if you look at it chronologically. Therefore glibly avoided the dreaded “9th symphony curse”

If you experience this, so called "Zero" Symphony, you may notice that while the first 2 movements may have religious underpinnings, the last 2 are a veritable orgasm! Behold the way that the scherzo jumps around. And the finale, with its orgiastic outbursts and snappy, sudden D major ending! This bespeaks a truly excited kid! You can have the somber seriousness and attempt to answer impossible existence questions as expressed in his last 3, but, at the age of 77, I'll take the youthful thrill of this one!

  • @robcat2075

They had no trouble in renumbering Dvorak's symphonies. Bruckner composed 11. Just number the F minor # 1, this one # 2 and add 2 to the 9 numbered ones. It's that simple and only fair. Just because Bruckner, a fanatically religious peasant and a frustrated bachelor, wished to repudiate the sexually suggestive aura of his early symphonies doesn't negate 2 of his most thrilling expressions and deny them a number.

Who needs a theme? The music just seems to flow and the listener is swept along with it. Pity the young Anton listened to that moronic conductor . Im sure with the right encouragement he would have revised it and it would have become a standard repertoire piece. It's a wonderful work.

I really like this piece as I do with all of Bruckner’s symphonies, but there is something slightly unfinished sounding about it compared to his others. A basic simplicity of texture, almost minimalist. In a way it has very modern resonances in that regard.

Give it a few more listens and you will find out what a great symphony this is. Bruckner tells his own story, just like in his other symphonies. To me that's all that matters.

Some of his later "official" symphonies are not without problems - No.3 (many revisions), No.4 (more revisions than any of them). Just sit back and enjoy the shear beauty of the music. By the way, there is a particular fine passage in the middle of the first movement of No.0 - full of nature... This Symphony is more than just an attempt - the F minor (Study), perhaps, but not this one.

This sounds like "Generic Symphony No. X by Long Dead Guy". :/ It's very milquetoast. Nothing wrong with it structurally. Extended sonata form. ABA. Kinda fast opening. Slow pretty 2nd movement, etc. But....eh.
