Antique Stationery Haul for Back to School (boarding school trunk!!)
Hello, and welcome to my channel. This is a space for study enthusiasts and tea drinkers, and those who spend hours ambling around libraries and book shops. I hope that my videos can provide motivation and encourage you to be productive, but without feeding into Hustle Culture. I think that productivity is all about enjoying what we do, and finding time for things that bring us happiness or will bring us happiness in the future -- and I hope to celebrate this kind of living on my channel.

The trunk is really cool, but looks like there’s quite a bit of mold inside in the lining. You may want to do something about that, exposure to mold can lead to health problems. Oh and if you want a fun, simple sewing project, you can make a pen wiper for your dip pen! Just cut scraps of cotton fabric in the same size and shape, stack them and sew them together in the middle (with a button, if you have a nice one). More sustainable than paper, and can be made entirely out of recycled materials!

I agree with most of what your saying, but mold in different countries act differently. Especially countries that are extremely easily prone to mold tend to have mold that isn't directly affecting to someone's health. However I don't know if that's the case for Ruby

In the UK mold isn’t a big deal because we don’t have drastic heat. I personally don’t think she has anything to worry about. We’ve have a bit of mold in our House ,as it is old, and we have had no health issues or anything wrong with us and our family has been living here for about 40 years. As the other comment mentions its acts differently in different climates. But everything else you said i 100% agree with.
As a non native , i learn alot from Ruby's short historical facts and names of these vintage items , i wish you would share more unique short facts in the future as you always do , such as : the tea party ,victorian letters and the dash ,and these blotting papers and so on ..

Writing letters with ink called 'Writer's Blood' has got to be the most dark academia thing ever 😂

i love hearing about the sustainability of the victorian period! it's hard knowing now whether modern brands are actually committed to sustainability or just greenwashing. i may also have to look on e-bay for some victorian school supplies (or at least buy new ink cartridges for my fountain pens)
Finding used antique nibs that are still intact is a bit of a surprise really. Older inks were corrosive, which meant nibs rusted and had to be replaced fairly often. They were commonly priced and sold by the dozen in advertisements for that reason. The ink was acidic and contained dissolved iron ions. With exposure to air, the iron oxidized and prciptated onto and withn the paper's surface, forming a permanent bond with a lightfast pigment. Creating the pigment after the ink is applied, prevents clogging of the pen which can happen with inks made from suspended pigments. Over time the acid corrodes the paper creating a filigree effect in old documents. So to protect your antique nibs, don't use acidic inks without washing the nibs afterwards. They are referred to as iron gall inks if I remember correctly.

It's pretty common to find new-old stock of nibs, especially from the more common manufacturers. But sometimes, if the previous owner took good care of their nibs, you can find great quality nibs from the 1900s. I've inherited some of my grandpas old nibs and nib-holders, and they are far superior to what is made today.

I like to use unused ones, as they end up molding to your handwriting. Especially useful if you are like me and have some motor control issues. Ooly's Splendid Pen is also great for that.

@@matildas3177 No such luck inheriting pens for me I'm afraind. The first pen holder I had, I pulled out of the snow while walking on campus. It was plastic with a cork grip stained with ink. Dropped by an art student I suppose. I was curious, so bought some nibs and ink at the bookstore, and gave it a try while journaling. I found it a great help for overcoming writer's block. Focusing on penmanship, diffuses the anxiety of writing. It makes it play not work. Just write words and ideas until the ideas connect into a pattern. Then you can find a thesis and start building paragraphs. Don't feel you have to start at the beginning. In fact it works best if you write the introduction last so you know what you are introducing. Write paragraphs, then arrange them in logical order. Don't feel bad if a paragraph does not fit into the essay you are writing. Save it for later. Eventually you will find an essay where it does fit.

*this entire was so aesthetically pleasing 😂*
I'm so interested to know what Ruby does once she graduates university. She is so individual and special!
Ruby is an older soul in a younger body and I love that about her. So unique 🥰! Never change Ruby.
When you haul out the trunk & my brain goes “ I need to re-read all of Malory Towers, Trebizon & Chalet School NOW” 😂 Loved the bit about fountain-pen history at the end but the whole video was a treat! Thank you & all the best for the new term/year. 👩🏼🏫👩🏼💻🧳📚🖋
hey, i'm pretty sure that paper like protectors break down the nibs of apple pencils quicker. just something to bear in mind

I’ve been using a paperlike screen protector for about three years now and so far I haven’t noticed any changes on my Apple Pencil. I do think you’re right and the paperlike slowly breaks down the nib but I guess it would only be noticeable after a very long time of constant use
Hi Ruby! I also wanted the PaperLike screen protector but because of the price point, I went ahead and bought a matt screen protector instead because it does have 'grit' on it similar to the PaperLike but it doesn't reduce the quality of the iPad screen. If you ever do want to try another alternative, give it a try! Great video, by the way, have a wonderful week
Hello Ruby! I just wanted to congratulate you on your character and uniqueness. There are not many people out there, especially on the internet, that still value the antiques besides the collectors, obviously, and you seem to be a great role model for young people to have! I have Ben watching your videos for a while now and I am really glad that you publish content that encourages people to read a lot more! Keep on with the good work and I wish you the best and most productive school year! All the love
Very interesting about the history of fountain pens! I love writing with fountain pens and dip pens! Lovely video
Antique stationary is so romantic and sentimental♡ I adore it!
I've just refilled my pen with Monboddo's Hat and will use Writer's Blood when the leaves start to change and I can wear a jumper. Diamine Eau de Nil is another lovely colour as is Sherwood Green. XXX I really love choosing ink xxx
Hi Ruby! I really love your vintage aesthetic and vibe! As a college student, I am motivated to be productive with the beautiful stationery as you are!
Wow this is so interesting and taught me a lot about old stationery!
i learn so much from your videos! you never fail to motivate me, and I absolutely love your aesthetic
This is the kind of video I've been waiting for! I'm a fountain pen enthusiast and use my pens for a lot of penpalling. I'm so pleased you are using cartridge convertors now- I recommend using a bulb syringe to help clean out your pens between ink colours. Aurora Borealis is one of my favourite Diamine inks and Monboddos Hat was actually designed by this amazing Facebook group that I am part of called Fountain Pen UK. It's such a wonderful supportive group- so I highly recommend joining if you enjoy using fountain pens!
Your videos help me SO MUCH with my anxiety. Thank you so much for always being here for me and making me feel safe.
I had the same feeling with the ipad with a paper like screen protector. For note taking I’ve bought the “ remarkable 2.0” after a long time of thinking about it. Honestly, I love it so much. I use it for personal things and professional. I highly recommend it.
So exited for more autumn and back to school content!! 🍂💛
Girl ..I just found you yesterday ..and you ARE MYYYY TYPE Exactly thinking as I do ..I adore vintage style ❤❤❤❤❤I am 16
Wow! All your supplies are so lovely! You must have lots of fun using them!
Thank you for the video I love all the effort you put into each one 💖🌿
I love your enthusiasm for learning - very inspiring.
Lovely video, I love the intricacy in the details of Victorian everyday objects.
taking a break from some history class work that I'm taking as an elective this semester, and it's so calming
I love how enthusiastic you are at the end of the video, you are clearly so passionate about what you are talking about.
the trunk is moldy Ruby
Wow that trunk looks so cool. I found the add-on at the end about fountain pens interesting too. Didn't realise they had existed for as long as that!
i love you so much ruby !
I have those two refillable ink cartridges. One I keep in my vintage 50+ year old Parker fountain pen that was my grandfathers.
Loved the trunk ❤️ Wonderful vlog. Thanks for the insight on ipad too .
That trunk is absolutely beautiful !
Wow Ruby, this was such a great video! I've just filmed a back to school supplies video but now you've made me want to buy even more haha (with an antique aesthetic of course!) xx
I love to use my Caran d'Ache pen to write. You only need to change the mines when they're empty. So much more sustainable than others.
I really enjoy watching your videos Ruby! My older sister even started to study because of watching your study with mes. ;)
Omgggggg this is all so dreamy. Absolute stationary goals. So lovely to see such a well curated collection, where did you find a lot of it 💗

This video was SOOOOO good!! Somehow managed to make me look forward to the upcoming semester! Now I have another goal added to encourage me to work harder ❤️✨ thank you so much Ruby ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, Ruby. What a video!
This school trunk is so cool! I love it
Writers Blood is a fan favorite. I think all fountain pen enthusiasts have this one. It’s really terrific.
I did find that interesting at the end. Always calming to watch your videos
I highly recommend Diamine's Ancient Copper if you're ever interested in a brown with that same colour-changing aspect as Aurora Borealis! My LAMY is inked up with it currently and I can't get enough of it.
So aesthetically pleasing and inspirational... 🥰🥰
Thanks for the advices about the paperlike screen protector. I'm thinking about getting an Ipad and with that, the paperlike. But you conviced me to have a "normal" one just for reading lecture on pdf are watching lectures. You are awsome and so unique! Lots of love from Annecy in France

@@truceserum6238 Thank you so much for your advice! It's really useful for me, so thank you again! I might take the paperlike and the clear one if I'm comfortable or not with it, I will try!
You have motivated me so much I get so sad when I finish your videos and I have to wait for another one but you always make me smile thank you so much
Watching you first thing in the morningg is the niceest thingg everrr!💕
What a wonderful surprise to wake up to :) Thanks for making this.
Ruby, the quality of your videos is getting better. It is so pleasant to watch ❤️
Oh My Gosh, Ruby! All of the stuff you got is so incredulously cool! To be fair I am a little jealous about the trunk and scissors but i am really hoping you are enjoying them. I too have a habit of collecting old and vintage things such as a British bullet canister, a very old leatherbound versions of The Grimms Fairy Tales and The Merchant Of Venice Textbook that was kindy sprawled with notes by my Great-Grandfather. But I loved the video. Cheers!
I have a ‘paper like’ screen protector for my iPad, however it’s just a cheap alternative from Amazon and I didn’t really notice and reduce in quality at all!
The princess of academia just posted!!! 💛💛I love your content, been bingeing it since 3 days since I found you🥰

Hi Ruby I know this is random but this video has really helped me visualise Jane Eyre writing her formal advertisements for a new job, its my favourite novel of all time so this video brought me a lot of joy and a weird sense of nostalgia! Much love
So enjoyed this video! Thanks Ruby🙂
The only haul I could enjoy
EARLYEARLY EEEKK!! IM EXCITED TO WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO!!

I really enjoyed watching it . the sounds of writing , the old theme of video just took me to 18 century Of England . you are sunch an actor who can take the hands of the audience to another world of wonder 🌹🌷🌻thanks for sharing them with us . From Iran 🌸
i loved the little history lesson at the end there :)
Thank you so much, Ruby!💝
I love watching your video it feels so good .💕
Just here to agree with your assessment of Rhodia paper- really good quality. I particularly love their more ivory, 90gsm paper (I’d reccomend the Rhodia R coloR head stapled notepad- not even a hint of ghosting with dip pens, and the sheen is to die for). Cool to see you ordered from cult pens too:) as soon as I saw the love hearts I knew hahaha. Edit: spelling
i love your videos so much!!
the wonder sticker in your laptop is soooo cool
I have recently discovered your channel and you give me a lot of motivation to learn
Easily my favorite channel.
i love your videos so much! i’m going to school in 2 days- sept 1. love from a small youtuber!
I love the stationary! I think the Trunk is awesome and the Zebra Sarasa is my favourite to, I already finished more than ten of them :O I hope they will make refills someday
Ruby is literally glowing throughout this video
I love all you hauls hope you do some more in the future
Love your content ruby!
idk why but the trunk creeps me out a bit :o
I do not need any more inks! I do not need any more inks! I do not need any more inks! If I say it often enough I might believe it. That Aurora Borealis and Mondoddos Hat look interesting.
I hope you know how much your videos help us!
For other ppl that want a paper feel screen protector: you can get a matte one for like £7 that doesn’t reduce quality at all
I like Sarasa pens a lot & have bought them here in the States at stores that sell them along with standards such as Papermate. I surely hope I won't ever have to pay s&h to order by mail. I'm a lefty & they're one of the few pens that don't smear as my fingers travel across the page plus they come in great colors. That's the bugaboo as far as writing with traditional fountain pens as the ink smears as I write. My trunk is hardly an antique, a gift from my mother to pack my things in when I went to college in the '70s. But it's held up well & now sits at the foot of my bed to store sheets & blankets. I have a fairly old typewriter I have saved, but can't find anyone that repairs them anymore.
Soooo STUNNING
I love how excited and happy you are here haha
I learned alot from Ruby's short historical facts and names of these vintage items , i wish you would share more unique short facts in the future as you always do , such as : the tea party ,victorian letters and the dash ,and these blotting papers and so on ..
Oh. My. Gosh. THAT TRUNK!!
The history of the fountain pen bit was interesting!
I can just tell its going to be a good video
