Please note: This video was not created for the meme. I really wanted to restore this saw when I first saw it. It's obvious that the handle is gone and I was hoping to save the blade. I tried for two days to weld up material, but it didn't work and turned out to be mess. So instead of trashing the whole project I kept going and this is the result. Edit: 1) The teeth of this saw had no set, as seen on the original blade after the sandblasting. Instead the blade is tapered. 2) I know this can't be called a restoration, that's why I title this video not as restoration.

Wouldn't welding up material on the blade have weakened it considerably? Or are you confident you could fix that through tempering? ... I have no idea what kind of carbon content welding feed has. Do you have different grades on hand for different kinds of fixes?

@@Steamrick I was so fixed on the idea of saving the blade that I didn't really thought about that. But you're right, the heat treatment was gone due to the welding and it wouldn't be possible to harden the welded parts again.

You said you couldn't save much of the original. You saved its memory. No one knows what that tool meant to the person who lost it, or what it built, but 20,000 people watched it go from piece of trash to mantle piece. I don't feel cheated that every piece couldn't be restored. Beautiful video, beautiful tool.

That smoked oak and brass combo is so absolutely gorgeous.

When you pressed that brass sleeve in at 10:04 I was like "Ohhhhhh, yeah." Nice touch! Also, is there anyone else who for some reason loves the sounds of pieces being slid across his work table or when the pieces "click" perfectly into place?

Honestly, even if you couldn't recover even the tiniest thing from the original Product, seeing you Recreate the devices so accurately, taking direct inspiration from the original designs, is just as good. It's like a Modern, WORKING Replica of said antique. And since you still use all of the same methods that you do when restoring, it's just as satisfying either way. That said, Awesome video, friend! Edit: Yes, I know He recovered the Brass pieces in this particular Project. What I meant was, regardless of how much he could or couldn't recover, and even if he really couldn't recover *anything* at all, I'd still enjoy watching him work either way, and admire the finish product all the same, because of the sheer quality of his work overall.

Even just re-using those brass pieces is pretty cool though - like when a building is destroyed but a small number of bricks or beams are salvaged and incorporated into the new one when it's built.

He skipped a step though. He didn't set the teeth on the blade. Probably should have filed them at alternate left right angles as well to increase cutting performance.

Whenever a tool from a previous restoration shows up, be it a press or an oil can, it always feels like seeing an old friend.

beautiful work. I've worked in a museum, and I can tell you that there was more restoration in your rebuild than you'll find in a lot of 'historical' artifacts behind the glass. One important step you forgot though: setting the saw teeth. You need to bend the alternate teeth out slightly in different directions so that the cut you make in the wood is always slightly wider than the saw blade itself. This prevents (or at least lessens) jamming. There is a tool you can get which does this, it looks similar to a hand rivet tool but shorter. Maybe you can find one to restore or make one for yourself. Alternatively, since you're great with machines, you might machine a saw tooth setting thing which you could use to do all the teeth at once in a bench vice. Anyway, great job.

not only did the teeth have no set in the original but i believe those types of saws are meant to lose the least amount of material as possible since their for "keyholes" or other small holes

Please don't bother yourself with comments like "it's not a restoration" or "it's a waste of material" You're doing much more than repairing tools. I watch your videos because of their form, your attention to details, my interest in the procces of making something, interest in what we're capable of with modern technology. Man I can't even cut paper along the line that well. I'm now realizing that this isn't JUST effort and taking your time, but an incredible amount of skill as well. No way just anyone could do this as well as he does. This guy's a straight up master at his craft. I really appreciate your pinned comment as well. Your care for this art is really commendable, most people would probably just slap the same title on or do something like this solely for the meme, but it really shows how much integrity you have and how this is always the last resort.

I watch these videos to help me sleep. I find them really relaxing.

Somebody said that you'll get something so bad that you'll make a new one from scratch. They were right. Good job.

Whenever, I am feeling blue, I come back to this channel and watch the old videos. I can watch them hundreds of times and they'll never bore me. The guy is simply a perfectionist.

You know, if you still have this one what I would like to see (and I'm sure a lot of folks agree) would be to take the original blade and handle, nickel plate the original blade, leave it pitted and tattered, the take the handle and put them in clear resin, this will preserve it and showcase it's original form. I think a new blade and new handle and only the bolster being original means that you've made a new blade entirely. Still ABSOLUTELY love the work though don't get me wrong!

Even if you didnt save much of the old saw, it was still fascinating to watch you make a new one, but still incorporate the old brass into it. a lovely way to upcycle :)

WOW!! Something my mechanics can't restore

The final result is awesome even if you saved only two small metal pieces. Your attention to detail and precision is incredible and I've never seen ANY other restoration channel come even close. Please never change! PS.: If in the future you find objects too broken to restore, maybe you could make a breakdown of the reasons, like a short diagnose-style video. It would still be entertaining and would save you the hassle of pretty much making an entirely new object from scratch.

Where once there was just decay, there is now a tool. The few parts that remain were made in a different time, and now help bind the new together. If not for the old original, there would be no new, if not for being found by your follower, it might have remained where it was until nothing was left. We may not be able to save everything, but we can always create to make sure the idea lives on. I like to think you did it justice when it otherwise would have been considered junk and completely destroyed.

You might not have saved the original but you saved the spirit and the concept. Very well done. I particularly enjoyed the use of the dovetail cutter and the milling machine head set at an angle to make the teeth. Great job.

Well, no, it isn't. Technically, everything is made on the same machines and with the same tools as he uses. Usually, on more primitive versions of these machines, so it is actually easier today. So obviously, he is capable to recreate any part of any mechanical device. And since he doesn't need to be concerned with price and manhours put into a single piece, he can take the time removing castmarks and things like that, so yeah, better than new condition it is. The spirit of the old saw lives on in the beautifully restored original brass pieces that hold it together!

I'm always amazed by the skill of this person refurbishing products!

I've said it once and I'll say it again. These videos of yours are so cathartic. Been in a lot of back spasm pain today and these are just so good to watch.

I love thinking of that old saw rotting in the Alps for decades, even a century, ready to disappear from the world forever. But no! MyMechanics is here to bring you a new life little one! It's a shame that only those two parts could be saved, but you did a great job to give this saw its former glory back (and maybe in an even better condition than when it was made). You saved what you could, and now it's ready to work again, instead of being lost in the mountains!

I appreciate your mill work. Rarely seen it applied to wood. Again, the attention to detail stands out. Well done Sir.

The whole part with the tempering in steel foil was a hundred times better than anything the best ASMR youtuber has ever done

its good practice to keep your hands clean when working with precise machinery like a mill. even the smallest metal chip under the part could ruin the next cut. not to mention that metal splinters are the worst.

He explained this on a live stream, when filming he excessively washes and scrubs his hands to keep them perfectly clean for the camera. This isn't what he looks like when normally working on parts xD

Just barely avoided the dreaded ship of Theseus! Man, that handle is a thing of beauty. Outstanding work.

There are a few Channels on KZread that do good restorations, but this guy does perfect ones. Im a real perfectionist and i could never see any flaws in his work. These videos give me chills, much respect man.
