Antique Pruning Saw Restoration - How To Make New Saw Teeth
This saw restoration was very challenging because I tried to keep as much of it as possible. The saw belongs to my father-in-law, and he says he has memories of this saw from the 60's .
As you can see, the saw is in a very bad condition. The blade is very rusty and has deep holes and the handle is simply destroyed. In this restoration I will show you how to restore the blade , no matter how destroyed it is and also how to make a new handle.
So I started the restoration. I disassembled the handle from the blade, I cleaned the dirt before blasting it, after which I sandblasted the blade. For a deep cleaning I did an electrolysis of the blade. In this restoration process, the blade needed some repairs. I had to restore his teeth, I had to remove his sharp and irregular edges, I had to repair the holes through which the new rivets will enter. The blade had deep pits, for this reason I could not sand it and bring it to a smooth and glossy shape. And so that the blade would not be exposed to rust quickly, I decided to apply a bluing solution. I know that a restoration means bringing the product back to the factory condition but that was the only solution to keep the blade in a decent shape.
After these stages the restoration of the saw continued by producing a new handle. I chose to use oak wood. I had a good piece of wood in the workshop, well dried, for more than 10 years. I tried to keep the shape of the old handle, in the smallest detail.
After which, the restoration continued by making new rivets. I chose to make the so-called "Chicago rivets". I saw those rivets made by My Mechanics and I can't wait to produce them too. It was challenging because it was the first time I did something like that, but I say they turned out well.
Towards the end of the restoration, I reassembled everything, sharpened the blade and finished the wood with oil. I also applied a layer of oil on the blade. My grandfather applied oil to all the tools, so they didn't rust anymore.
I have tried my best as I always do, to make the restoration easy for you to understand, but if you have questions about the restoration or anything else regarding the process or materials used in the restoration, just ask me and I will answer you all.

Gorgeous restoration. I think I commented to you before about this but gotta say it again, I love it how you let the pitting on the blade to show it's age. Too many guys would've tried to grind that off and destroyed a finish that took half a century to develope.

Hey! I love all your work, its so satisfying lol. Its inspired me to give this stuff a go. Ive found an old antique sewing machine in a cabinet on craigslist and was wondering if you had any advice or tips on restoring some of its parts? Or even advice on if it’s worth the trouble lol. Im not good at figuring out what’s valuable or not
@CoolAgainRestoration
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Madeline. If the product is not very rusty,it’s more valuable if you let it like that,just cleaning. A sewing machine is very hard to restore like new. Because has many components that are chromed ..
Great job, looks better then when it was new.

Holy cow, your ingenuity amazes me. I would have never thought you could actually restore the teeth and yet you did. I would've assumed you'd get a bladesmith/blacksmith to forge you a base and the cut from there.
@CoolAgainRestoration
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Ricky. Yeah,was enough blade to make another line with new teeth . The sad thing was the fact that the blade was to thin and I can’t sand to a smooth surface. But I think looks good with the black blade and the oak handle.
@Frostgnaw
2 жыл бұрын
@@CoolAgainRestoration oh it looks great regardless. My brother has been watching Forged in Fire and I've gained a very small knowledge base on how to forge metal. It's a really interesting show, but yeah, thin steel is generally bad overall.
0:59 What is the reason for cleaning before using a sandblaster? Why not just use a sandblaster from the start?
@CoolAgainRestoration
2 жыл бұрын
Because the big particles can stop the sand to circulate on the installation 👍🏻
...была у меня точно такая-же садовая ножовка, ещё от отца осталась, когда я её реставрировал, в рукоятку сделал крепление для сменных полотен, под любой распил древесины,- удачи мастер-плюртник!!!
Surprised to see that you made the rivets so long that you had to file off so much excess on all four heads. However the overall quality of craftsmanship is as always super. Thanks for sharing.
@CoolAgainRestoration
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul. Yeah,sometimes I need to do the work differently when I filming because if I made that rivets short or exactly like the thickness of the handle,then the filing footages was inutile . It’s hard to mix the art of filming with the restoration work.

Awesome restoration of something most would have tossed out. I "restored" one in about the same shape, but instead of restoring, i repurposed. I ground all of the teeth off, then beveled and sharped the old spine making a filet knife out of it. I fitted a hidden tang epoxy bamboo handle. Definitely not a restoration, but kept it out of the junkard! Cheers from theos_resto!
