Antique Booth Mistake #2: You're selling what you like instead of what your customers want to buy

(previously recorded LIVE) In this series, I talk through 5 of the more common reasons you may not be making money in your antique booth or vendor business.
This one may be a little hard to hear! I see a lot of booth vendors using their booth as an excuse to go shop for what they like and love, and not always thinking about what their customers always want. Is your shopping customer-focused? If it's not, you're probably not seeing the sales you wanna see!

I created a boho booth because that is the hottest trends in my area. But I hated it. I hated what it looked like because it wasn't what I loved. I hated going there to fluff it each week and it really did become neglected and my sales tanked! Did horribly. Then I went and ripped out all the items I hated and sold them online. I then had a booth I loved and cared for. Customers can tell when there's passion in what you do and my sales improved.

I'm in South Alabama and farmhouse is going like crazy here. I came down from Atlanta 4 years ago and the trend was dying there. I paint and source farmhouse stuff. White painted furniture sells like crazy. Do I have it in my house? Not at all. I prefer dark cottagecore. But I like to eat, so I paint all the things white (or light neutral colors). 🤣

You know, this is good advice for someone who does crafting, too. In my area, everyone seems to be into the modern farmhouse, which I despise, and I really have no idea why they call it farmhouse, at all. I prefer the look of antiques, and I love the traditional farmhouse, where the decor is often functional. I have to keep in mind, what you're saying, in this video, when I am making things to sell. I find it sad that the modern farmhouse look prefers more mass produced cheap junk, over beautiful and real antiques. I do understand the cost is not always in their favor, but, to me, the mass produced stuff is just cheap and ugly looking. So many of my friends have this style, and some of the stuff they have, just cheapens their entire look. It is, also, so "cookie cutter," there is nothing original. If Jenny, down the block, buys it, they must have it, and it really makes for a boring atmosphere, when they're all the same and nothing is unique. However, I have to sell my products, whether, it is a project I have made or something I have found, while out thrifting, so, I have to make, what will sell.

Watch Salvage Hunters on KZread. Drew Pritchard has been in the antique business his entire life. He is now probably the best known dealer in the UK. He says to buy things that you LOVE. IF you don’t love it, neither will your customers. Just do what works.

I sell vintage and antique ephemera and 17th-20th century prints. What I have noticed is that my cat prints from Clare Turlay Newberry didn't sell like they normally do this past year and has led me to scale those back. They used to be a set of prints that always sold, but now haven't moved at my main location. They did move a little at the seasonal shop that I am in that goes April - October and that is where I will send them this year!

I've just discovered you and what a delight! I work for a lovely antique shop in Freeport, Maine and am learning so much through your channel. Do you still have online boot camp? If so, how do I join?

Ok. So I skipped watching this yesterday because I was like... selling what I like is what sells for me. LOL. Since I didn't watch during the live I will type my questions as we go. First question... when you say "buy at market and resell"... what market??? LOL Where do you find these markets? Because stuff like that sells at my antique mall. Especially greenery. But I don't know where to get that stuff. At least not at prices I think are profitable. Also, I'm still working on my branding. I am a furniture builder to start. And then started attending auctions for myself but found pieces that I wanted to fix up and flip. I found that those pieces sell quick but also I can get more of those pieces in my booth. Meaning... I can complete these flips quicker than builds. I really want to do the boot camp. I don't know how the camp flows. But I have so many questions. LOL... ha. You just answered that question in the video.. I am on the fence deciding if this is a viable business for me or if I should close my booth. I WANT to do it... but I want to make money for my family and to justify continuing to do it.

At first I thought “yikes! I don’t want to sell what I don’t like”, but I see what you’re saying. Adjusting for the market. Right now I’m making mostly monochromic bags made from vintage textiles, but I think I’ll try doing some in bright colors so there’s a variety. Thank you for your ideas.

I realize this is a difficult question. But in a quality resale vintage store about why kind of net profit would you expect to see in a month? I realize it depends on the month, but a wild guess would be helpful. Thanks I learn so much from you.

I am so glad I found your page. My mom and I are about to start a booth at our local vendor mall. She has done so before, but this will be my first time. I want to take your boot camp but I will have to wait till next signup. My one question, I would ask is, how do you inventory? How do you determine how to label your items so that you know when you bought, placed them and how to track the items you sell. You have excellent advice. I look forward to every video

Fine, but what do you do with your current merchandise? Do you eliminate them? How do you justify the loss of what you bought? I understand that one needs to change your buying and what is bought. One's current booth needs to evolve. I'm requesting suggestions.
