I love the fact that there aren't any stupid music overlays. You get to hear every aspect of the restoration which is what makes these video's exceptional.

My father was a Monroe tech. starting 1967. He could make these machines and their operators happy.

Having collected and restored many Monroe, Friden, and Sweda mechanical calculators & cash registers, I can tell you that without the service manual, it is extremely difficult or near impossible to reassemble a working device. There are so many intricacies and subtle mechanical timing steps that would never be considered without reading proper documentation. Regardless of whether this calculator worked or not, it’s still a beautiful restoration. I wish I had the means to sandblast my cases. I just clean them up as best I can.
I do love watching restorations like this. This one was quite an large project. You did a fine job. I just wish you would’ve shown how well it functioned at the end.

I suspect that it does NOT work. He didn't even lubricate the mechanism. I think he was only interested in cleaning and painting it. Now it'll end up on a shelf in some millennial's apartment.

@@stephendeluca4479 I would display that thing on my shelf, for sure - its awesome looking.
How can a person design something like this? It is magnificent.
To just know how to do this is in itself is unbelievable because sometimes there are missing pieces TINY pieces that can make all the difference when putting it back together. There are no directions except what you might find online but the patients it takes and ability to find what’s needed if not then make it???? How crazy is that. You’re AWESOME at what you do please never stop posting. Ty
Me: can we get a new calculator? My mom: we already have one at home The calculator at home:
A VERY IMPRESSIVE MACHINE
My Dad used to sell Monroe Calculators back in the 50's, 60' and 70's.
😳 a mechanical freakin calculator?? Holy shit that was a smart ass human that designed that!!

did i miss it or did you forget to lubricate all the mechanics?
It amazes how you remember where it all goes back. Xx
One thing is to disassemble the thing but reasembling it? That's a whole other game. Well done!
Now you should enlist a trained Monroe technician to make it work properly -- there might be a few old, retired guys who know how. Those gears, levers, and springs all need to be timed correctly. I'm a retired office equipment repairman -- typewriters, mostly. Saw lots of those old Monroes. All I could do was clean and oil -- the repairs I left for the Monroe guys. Good video though.
Oh those poor springs. My heart hurts for those poor little springs.
A little appreciation of how you turned the vacuum cleaner into a background noise!
Such an intricate analog device.
I have always been an admirer of the ingenuity behind these analog / mechanical mashines. The video however reminds me that cleaning my own keyboard is long overdue 😳😄
There are rectangular bars under the keyboard between each column of keys. They should have been painted red on alternate sides of the rectangle. They are visual aides to mark out columns on the keyboard. Each bar has a knob at the top to change the color, which would be visible through a rectangular window all the way down.

@@obedmurillo462 What does that even mean? First of all, this ain't reddit. Second, he's just pointing out a mechanical feature of the calculator that wasn't considered in this restoration. I wouldn't have known that, I've never operated one of these calculators. It's a fun fact and a consideration for others undertaking the project.

Watching you removing the keys reminded of: Once I was fixing a well loved and lived VCR of a client, and had to take all apart to clean the literal dirt and check if it was just it. Teeny tiny parts, delicate pieces. All cleaned, time to reassamble! That's when I discovered my camera didn't save any photos of the process, so I didn't knew *how* to put it all together. And that's how it took me days to complete a job that usually takes 2 hours.
Great job
I"m really impressed with how well this piece held up on the insides. Not as much corrosion or rust as I expected.
Asombrosa restauracion de esta calculadora antigua de 1950, excelente resultado, mis respetos desde Venezuela.👍💯👍🙏

I had to see it's working
I learn something new each time I watch. Well done.
I worked one of these things in the early 70s before calculators (the Bowmar Brain) came out. The register would move back and forth and up and down for about 30 seconds to do a calculation but every business had this, especially banks. I think we called it a comptometer.
Dang that's like one of the final bosses GG lol
Fabulous work! Each project is both interesting and educational. I learn a lot about items and their workings just watching you.
Awesome work 😮
One of the most beautiful restoration I've ever seen!!! Really amazing!!!
Impressive - I have exactly the same machine in my collection. So fun to see it disassembled!

Wow, an amazing transformation. You did a great job. I looked at the filth inside that you had to clean and wonder where the original owners kept it? Well done.
Did you notice that I wasn't joking around about myself, if I ever say I sure do miss the good old days? I notice that you tried hard to restore this old calculator! Even though digital calculators, are far more better and superior. 😌 👏 👌 😤 🙌 😔 😌

Muy buen trabajo, felicitaciones!! 🇵🇪
This would be easy to do. First, I'd take it to MrRescue, then...
i more love the way you restore car toy than other idk why.. anyone else?
I have one of these still with a carrying case. It was the most popular calculators we had in our division. That was a little over 25 years ago. I can use it for basic addition and subtraction, but there is still much I never learned on it. It’s extremely reliable for determining roadway grades.

Great job. Now the beauty has been restored. Before spreadsheet on laptop, there were abacus, calculation ruler and beauties like this. Now people can see a real one that’s still around.

Goodness me. Just watching you take that apart I kept thinking how on earth are you going to even remember which bits go where.

I used one of these at work in the 1970s. It had enough digits on it to calculate things that and electronic calculator can’t show. Try the chessboard 2^64-1 calculation.
Holy geez, the patience needed 💙💙
All we need is restoration
My calculations are correct 10/10!
Now it’s a clean still broken calculator
AWESOME!
OMG. I used to have to use this machine, or one very like it. Excellent job.

These are complicated machines which require oiling and adjusting. Looks good on the outside but can pretty much guarantee it was not functional when you finished.
it's rough when you remember using something being restored.. seams like the one l used had a brown wrinkle finish paint
Good thing he showed that it works well too..

Very nicely done.
Super cool. 😊
Had you removed the buttons & carriage and outer shell. Then sprayed the whole thing automotive brake or carb. cleaner. It would still function. You took a dirty working adding machine that needed only to have the dried grease removed & replaced, And turned it into a broken painted paperweight. There is a knob on the right side to cover where you insert a crank handle so it doesn't need any power to operate enter the number by depressing the buttons, push add or subtract. the buttons remain down. just one pull on the crank will add & subtract a list of running numbers. after the buttons pop back up pulling the crank handle twice totals the list.

@@obedmurillo462 Not just smart you must be very rich too. I wish you the best. Unless you show the adding machine working like new all you did was lie about restoration. It means working and looking like it did when it was new. I don't think you would get fewer likes & subscribes if you said you tinker and refresh things. We mostly like to see what is inside things. As many people would like to see you smash them as fix them. So why lie. I had a mechanical adding machine with a hand crank. And I used to fix it. I never would have taken it all apart. But springs broke, screws fell out but mine worked after I repaired it. It worked when I sold it. I got it from a scrapyard and fixed it to play with when I was10... got it to work when I was 12 and used it for 20 years.
