In this lecture, I summarize the most important classes of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine including the beta-lactams (penicillins, cephalosporins, beta-lactamase inhibitors, carbapenems and monobactams), tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, aminoglycosides, macrolides, phenicols, sulfonamides and nitroimidazoles . We discuss the mechanisms of action and spectrum of activity of each class, highlighting key drugs.
