I’ve been too nervous to start the bottle of Lexapro that’s been sitting on my bathroom counter for the past month. I guess it’s the fear of making my brain reliant on something to function. But your comment about feeling vital again hit me so hard that I teared up. I haven’t felt vital for 17 years, and I’ve been in denial about the impact that has had on my career, my relationships, my self regard. I miss the version of me that saw life as one giant opportunity, rather than a series of tasks I have to slog through. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m ready to begin.

@@EmilyLovesBooks LOL… so… after my little soapbox speech I didn’t take them 😂 Not because I changed my mind, there just hasn’t been a great time to start. I’m expecting an adjustment period (some people have horror stories about the first few weeks) and life hasn’t calmed down enough to feel like I have the runway to be experimenting with my brain chemistry. Which probably explains why I need meds in the first place 🙃 Maybe there is no perfect time to start?

I wanted to start off my saying THANK YOU for even speaking about mental health let alone share your story with thousands of people! You Asia are one strong human and if no one’s told told you, you are a special ! I’ve been wanting your videos for about a year now ! I was prescribed lexapro back in October of 2021 and was going some research of other people’s experiences with Medication and came across your first video of you stating meditation since then you changed my views on medication and made me feel at ease since I wasn’t really supported by my family and really felt alone! You changed my life and for that I will always wish you nothing but happiness!! Hope you see this message and let’s you know by sharing your experience you saved a life ! THANK YOU 🙏🏻

I was prescribed Zoloft after having my second child but after a few years I took myself off which was dumb. I have always struggled with depression and severe anxiety. I don’t know how to live a life without constantly being stressed about everything. I don’t have insurance so I have not been able to see a doctor. I was scrolling instagram and saw Hers. Figured, why not. After going thru all of the questions and chatting with a doctor, I’ve been put on the generic lexapro. I was worried about it because I am not a big medication person but this video makes me feel calmer about it for sure. Thank you. I just want to be able to live and breathe and enjoy life. Finally. It’s way past due. At 37, I’m annoyed with my self for not doing this before. 🎉

Asia, I wanted to thank you for de-stigmatizing taking medications for mental health. I found this video about a month or so ago when I was still in the trenches of anxiety and depression (and other stuff) and was still scared of taking meds. It took a couple tries with other meds but I’m finally on a good combo of a couple meds and I feel more like myself again. Thank you for making this vid.

I remember watching your video back in the day, about your struggles. Came out of depression as well and there's no better feeling than this. I was hella shocked at first that a person can have so much energy purely bc I did basic personal care in the morning AND STILL had energy to do other things. Absolutely mind-blowing lol no wonder ppl can achieve so much if they have regular amounts of stamina throughout the day. If there is someone thinking about going on meds/ going to therapy: please do it, you will not regret it. You might need to switch your meds or the therapist but truly nothing feels better than not being miserable all the time. Thanks for the video Asia I really do believe it helps with destigmatization ❤️

Thank you for being so open and outspoken about both depression and anxiety and medication! I agree stigmas must be abolished! So awesome your mom was so understanding and you had such good luck with your meditation! I've had depression since 2003 and meditation I've tried my liver hasn't tolerated. I feel like I have to choose between coping with life and a healthy body. My hope is that future generations don't feel this way. Thank you for sharing! I hope everyone reading this feels validated! I'd say it gets easier but you get older and wiser ... stay strong everyone 💚💚💚

Thank you for sharing and being vulnerable about your mental health, Asia. I come from a Filipino background too, and I did get the stigma of "Why do you need medicine for that, you're just thinking too much and doing it to yourself". I was (very persistently but gently) told by at least two medical professionals that I might have a mood disorder or issue, and I was in denial for a while, until I had a breakdown, and had to reprocess old memories and stuff and do group therapy. Through therapy/EMDR, learning DBT/CBT, boundaries, joining support groups, and meds for a small amount of mood stabilizers and anti anxiety, MY HEART RATE TOO IS SORT OF NORMAL NOW lmao

During my treatment I also gymed daily, juiced veggies and fruits, quit alcohol, limited coffee to three times a week, and started vitamin d, light therapy, and vitamin b12 for best results. The lexapro gave me the motivation to do all these things to get better. i have ocd that spirals into depressive episodes if i don't control it. the cons of lexapro for me were slight weight gain, being sweaty, and slight insomnia.

@@Shahid4real That’s okay. Now, I try to get out in the sun more and drink more lemon water. I feel like a house plant lol. Listening to some of my favorite music helps a lot too. I journal which sounds really corny but it does help a lot. Also, I have experimented with a few marijuana thc products. Some trial and error with that one but I have found one (a liquid product) that I really like using every now and then that a family member makes for me and I mix into my hot tea or any beverage at night before bed. Sorry for my long essay. I just want to be helpful.

@@sabrinag3357 no no it's okay it was helpful. I'm on laxapro for about a year now, before that a 6 months of heavy medication which really messed me up and I quit mid way and after that I started the lowest dose of laxapro. Currently my issues are manageable tho it becomes overwhelming sometimes. I wanted to quit coz I don't think medication is helping and feared the long term effects of it, as I am in my mid 20's.

@@b1l4l yes i have! My life is drastically better ever since ive started taking it. i feel like i can be myself in public and ive made so many friends. If youre really struggling i really do recommend starting medication because its hard to try to come out of your comfort zone when your anxiety is up the roof, medication will ease it, making it easier for you to apply strategies to improve your social skills

very nice and interesting video, I suffer from selective mutism which is a social anxiety freeze or flight disorder since I was born, the problem was that I just found out about it this year after I suffered almost my whole life from severe anxiety and I thought it was normal 🙈 the way I found out was that I also got depression to a point where I didn´t feel anything anymore, now I will soon start a group therapy and I quit my job that wasn´t good for me. I think it is interesting how you talk about your experience with medication because I always thought medication isn´t a good thing because we need to solve the root of the problem instead of numbing the body with medication, but the way you explain everything makes sense and maybe I will talk about it with my doctor and consider going on medication for my anxiety disorder.. I´m glad it helped you and I wish everybody the best 💕

Not saying we shouldn’t have medicine, I am saying it needs to be safer

24:10 the stigma is a big problem in working class white families too. Recently started taking lexa and told my dad about it and he's like "nah dont take that crap just take B vitamins" 😂😂😂 "man up" is necessary sometimes but I been dealing with this since I was 7 years old and hasnt changed in 20 years so clearly what I'm doing before aint working

That's funny I told my dad last night I've been taking Lexapro for a week and he said the same thing to stop taking it and take magnesium at night 😂 I only plan to take about 6 months, a year if it has a positive outcome, just enough for me to feel better enough to make some lifestyle changes and get out of my head so I can do more in my life

@@josie1857 hope it works for you. It made my anxiety way lower but made me very blank. And it made me really callous like I didn't care about hurting other people's feelings which is something I struggled with already. Combining it with wellbutrin worked for me really well. I take 5mg lexa and 300mg wellbutrin xr. Been on that combo for maybe 6 months and I feel both a little less anxious and a little less depressed. Magnesium glycinate and B vitamins are actually pretty good, far from a cure but def noticeable. Also get some sunlight if you don't already
