Anti-Markovnikov Radical Halogenation of Alkenes

Leah4sci.com/Radical presents: Anti-Markovnikov Radical Halogenation of Alkenes
Need help with Orgo? Download my free guide ’10 Secrets to Acing Organic Chemistry’ HERE: leah4sci.com/orgo-ebook/
In this video, you’ll learn how the radical halogenation of an alkene in the presence of peroxides differs from the typical hydrohalogenation alkene addition reaction. You’ll learn how to apply initiation and propagation steps of the radical mechanism, how to identify the most stable intermediate, and understand why the anti-Markovnikov product is favored.
You’ll also learn about the stereochemistry of alkene radical halogenation.

    I'm wondering why did the reaction initiates with bromine not hydrogen?? Thank you is not enough...your videos really helped me

  • @Leah4sci

    You're so welcome! The oxide radical grabs the hydrogen from HBr to create a very stable alcohol molecule. (The alternative would be to bond the oxygen to the bromine, and that is not energetically favorable.) That leaves a bromine radical to initiate the radical halogenation. So H should go on the most stable (substituted) carbon?

  • @Leah4sci

    @Leah4sci

    3 ай бұрын

    Yes, you can think of it that way. The radical intermediate will form on the most substituted carbon of the pi bond after reaching for a bromine radical in solution. That leaves the more substituted position available for the H of the HBr reagent.
