Anti-Fog Products for Glasses: Do They Work?

In our usual unscientific style, we try to come up with some unusual ways to compare six different solutions for reducing lens fogging to find out if any of them actually work and if so, which performs best. The list includes OptiFog, Clarity Defog It, No Fog Cloth, a simple AR coating, and shaving cream.

    I standardly fog my glasses (prior to cleaning with a microfiber cloth) simply by holding the lens in my mouth, being careful not to touch any part with my tongue or other mouth surfaces, and breathing out. The water we give off from respiration is fairly pure and mineral free so as long as you don't accidentally get any saliva on the lens, you've coated your lens with what's pretty close to distilled water vapor. This both acts as a lubricant for the microfiber cloth and helps dissolve any water based dirt particles. I'd think this would be useful for testing anti-fog products too.

    Wouldn't be better to make use of lenses with antidote coating. I believe it is much better and more convenient. It was some good years ago and may be available from vision ease. Also, not every coy try has this product. However, I appreciate your effort and please continue the good work. Now, how long will this NOFOG remain? 1 hour, 2 hours, ..... For the cloth of antidote, do we it need application on the ophthalmic lenses every hour, or how many hours.... I am from Canada, and the NOFOG, or antidote matters for me. That is important for me to have clear vision. Thanks again and have a great fruitful day.

    Hello, I just wanted to share that astronaut Chris Hadfield says NASA started using Johnson’s No More Tears baby shampoo as an anti fog agent on space suits for space walks after the anti fog agent he was using got in his eyes during a space walk and caused him to temporarily loose his eye sight when it got in his eyes. I looked up your video because i was curious what is out there. I found this bottle of something called Xene at the power plant where I work. The bottle looks really old and I can’t find it online. The stuff really works. It’s amazing. But it seems like it might be toxic. Not sure what it even is. Thank you for the video.

    I use a 'Neck Gaiter' as a mask you can find them at your local Walmart for $20 dollars. Least for me using the 'Neck Gaiter' as a mask don't fog up my glasses. While it's not the best choice for a mask but least it will still have a use after the current world issue is over with. You can wear the 'Neck Gaiter' as a head bandanas and wear it damp to help keep you cool during those hot days. You can also just wear it damp around your neck to help keep you cool during those hot days.

  • @LaramyKOptical

    @LaramyKOptical

    3 жыл бұрын

    OptiFog (as mentioned in the comments below) is one of them. We get good feedback on them. Essilor had a no-fog product I'm not sure if they still do. Like AR since it is a micron thick it will start to break down as soon as it is applied. So you might have good results for 3, 6, 12 months (in my opinion). If fogging is a huge problem - creating dangerous situations I guess I'd give it a try.

    Far be it from me to undermine your good work. That said, the oven thing... your face has to be right above the door when it opens. That's when the fogging happens. Also, another great test would be a shower mirror. They mostly come with an anti-fog coating, but once that wears off (and it absolutely will), the mirror will never not fog during showers.

    I think the product themselves is engineered in error, or currently or was to complex. However today we have many more optiosn to revist the engineering of googles for absolute no fog. Why, does it occur. It occur because of a temperature change on both sides of hte glas, which attracts molecules to move in that direction. So old houses with single panes, verse double panes, verse triple panes. I have seen hydro phobic, and hydrophilic properties do various substrates like plastics ot sprays over teh GLass, or plastic to whatever various thing it is... The question is the binding positio to the surface and ot eliminate that operation. My stusy would involve... single, double and triple isolated wall design/ sealing. and electrical special surface design, but a wire method, or the len itself has small channels that slightly obfscate the lens, but superficial to the process of fog elimination. Just like the earth... its a gradient of movement of cold nad hot fronts and oisture content. So its predicatable to how it happens, its the method of prevention that I ma currious about. So hwo does one prevent it... The triple would be interesting because its creating and insulated varriable where teh gradient between teh substrates doesn't have a steep curve but is lightly offset.. and the centralized barrier would ahve no moisture inside to condensate.. so... the insulated varialble should keep two distinct temperatures. hmm
