Anthony Hopkins Interview 1978 Brian Linehan's City Lights
In this interview from 1978, actor Anthony Hopkins talks about the film Magic: his roles of Corky Withers and the voice of Fats, learning how to be a ventriloquist, learning some magic tricks, using experiences from his childhood to play the role, playing piano as a child, director Richard Attenborough, and director Norman Jewison working on the film for almost a year before a falling out with producer Joseph E. Levine.
He also talks about his role as Dysart in the original 1974 production of Equus on Broadway, Equus director John Dexter, reviving the role in LA and directing Equus in LA, not playing the role of Dysart in the film Equus, his fascination with Hamlet and desire to perform Hamlet and direct it, his friendship with Carol Burnett and being part of a community of actors.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. The calmness in Anthony Hopkins' voice is very soothing...I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone be so completely open whilst also being so completely at peace with themselves...that was a wonderful interview, Hopkins has a confidence in the way he speaks that can only come from a total lack of fear. Here is a man who has slayed his demons and walks free of fear.

Back when TV was for adults. It's nice that the interviewer stays silent and lets Anthony talk for so long.

An only child. Father hated when he played piano = trauma. Introverted yet easy on the eyes. Why? Perfectionism is a sickness. I know. I used to have it. Drove my friends away as they would say I'm a "control freak", that I wanted to steal everyone's power. But it's a result of insecurity and a way of trying to heal wounds to the psyche. Tony picked up the piano again because his father wasn't there to berate him. This is a troubled soul even now, he looks for divinity. He worries what is beyond death. I hope he finds peace before he passes. Sir Anthony Hopkins, thank you for being. Thank you for all the gifts you've created for us. They are part of your legacy and will be forever I should think. When we die, we will be joining billions who have gone before us. So. We should be at peace with it.

@@vintagesoul73911 I guess I'm mixing up things bc I saw him in a film in the 70s where his hair was blondish but it could have been white or grey. He obviously died his hair darker for sotl bc it's dark then at the Oscar's its white. Although sotl was filmed a good amt of time b4 the 92 Oscar's it already was a very long time from its release in feb 91 since an Oscars came after that in 91 all the way til March of 92 . Plus the film started in late 89 into early 90 but was held back months & months bc Orion was pushing dances with wolves for its promo in 1990 & moved silence to after dances with wolves run to 91 so it was basically 3 years between shooting & the Oscars. That actually unwittingly helped sotl become a phenomenon bc it just missed the oscar deadline so it made a fortune at the box office then was kept going through cable & video rentals then all the Oscar nods made more people see it then it made history becoming the 3rd film ever ( & not since in 30 years ) to sweep the top 5 so younger people like me who were too young to see it in feb 91 we were all catching it again bc of the Oscars wins well into may of 92. That's an unusually very long run for people to add onto the phenomenon & was all accidental. If it was released in late 1990 it all could have been different. If a movie gets released too close to its Oscars then it could vanish but this kept going & going. Basically I was 9 when it came out bc it was early in the year b4 my bday & 11 when I saw it in april after my bday in 92. So at 11 since things were way more relaxed with kids viewing access a whole new group of kids got to see it bc I know in almost 6th grade I was given way more independence.
here's a man who's been off his rocker for probably most of his life, and has become one the world's most venerated actors. He actually used that "skill" to make it happen like others.
I find the watermark in the image ridiculously big and distracting.
