Antebellum Greek Revival Georgia Mansion -- video tour (SOLD)
Edit Sep 2017: the house is now sold. Yay!
..........
This video is about a wonderful antebellum house for sale in Macon, GA. The Napier-Small-McMullan home (156 Rogers Avenue) has had but 3 owners in its nearly 170 years. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Although you can see the pictures online, nothing tells the story like a walk through by family members who purchased the home in 1971 and have loved it since then.
Please join us on a heart felt, albeit a little long, tour (the house is 6,000 square feet, by the way, which takes some time...). You can also see more pictures and link to the MLS listing at www.156RogersAvenue.com.
To make navigation of the video easier, here are time markers:
Start - Front of house
1:00 - Front porch and front hall
2:17 - Living and Dining Room
4:41 - Pantry, Kitchen, Backyard
6:07 - Sunroom, Powder Room
7:26 - First floor master/Mother-in-law suite
8:51 - Upstairs, Bedrooms 2 & 3, Bathroom, balcony
12:10 - Bedrooms 4 & 5, Bathroom, Bonus room
15:30 - Closing
Lastly, a few other notes:
1. We are not professionals. Don't even hope.
2. I say more than once gold plate when I mean gold leaf. Apologies.
3. I also say the main rooms are all 20'x20' but in the official listing, there is some minor variation from this.
4. Yes, there is a lot of blue here... I swear it makes for a nicer neutral than you might think.
Enjoy! And again, please visit www.156RogersAvenue.com for more information and contact details.

Thank you to all for viewing and commenting. I'm very happy to report that the house sold...closed today. I have not met the buyer but my mom could not be more happy that a lovely, generous man will now call this place home. Warms my heart.

You kidding me the fire places are gas gas fireplaces are so not for this. House what happened to the good old wood burning fireplaces
@jimjordan5630
5 жыл бұрын
@@danielp5570 Most probably the fireplaces in that house were not originally "wood burning" but are probably "coal burners". The fireboxes for burning coal are much different than the one for burning wood. The chimney would have also been slightly different due to drafting and the heat that would have gone up the chimney. A lot, if not most, of these old homes have had their chimneys "lined" and have gas logs in place now. unless they're listed as a Historical landmark or fall under some other guidelines to maintain authenticity of the period and/or original structure. I know because I own a 1910 Neoclassical with eight fireplaces also and have had "experts" from several organizations give me info on the work that I'm currently doing. I hope that this info is of a help and for clarity of the subject.

Am deeply gratified that your family respected the house and didn't do a 'modernization' of it during your time there. It's bones and antiquity are well preserved. Thank you for taking care of it. I hope the new owners have treated it well.

I am in love with this home. I can only hope to find something like this in 5-10 years when I am ready to buy my forever home. We just bought a small starter home south of Savannah. But I dream of one day owning something like this.

OMG what an amazing property! The home is spectacular, well maintained and still holding all its charm.
Can’t help thinking about what I would do this place 😍 remove all the carpets to reveal the original hardwood floor. Remodel almost all of the bathrooms. Imagine how fun it would be to decor everything!! The dream
There are some very beautiful old homes in Macon, Ga. I was there this time last summer. I remember seeing this home, along with many other beautiful old homes that have lot's of "soul", unlike the homes of today that look thrown together by comparison. They just don't build things today like they did back then. You'd think it would be the opposite with all the advances in technology but the older I get, the more I realize that what is being called "progress" today actually means the opposite.

So glad this home has been sold. Am sure it will be purchased by a family that will love it as much as all of you have for so long! Thank you for sharing it with so many.
What an absolutely priceless gem! It's my dream to own a home like this and help preserve it for future generations.
I can't afford to buy your home, but I absolutely loved your video tour. I have watched it more than once. I hope my children remember their childhoods as fondly as you and your sister. Seems like you all had an enchanted childhood there!
What a beautiful home and such a great video tour with warm and wonderful personal memories. I hope that someone buys this house who will give it the same loving care and preserve it as your family has done all these years. I think the personal stories are the best selling points.
That is best chandelier I’ve seen, exquisite actually, and sometimes I don’t like them! This one is light yet airy and no doubt bright..

I like seeing this style of architecture.
Such a beautiful home, I wish... Thanks for the lovely tour.
That is my kind of place! Same era as my Grandma's farmhouse. I would update kitchen, paint, and carpet, and maybe hide a residential elevator somewhere, but the new owners are so lucky.
Been on the market for a little over 200 days. In 1 year, I plan to make a move and this home is on the top of my list. If it's still available, I'll fly down there.

I was raised in the house on the corner of Rogers n Clayton Ave. Dr. Lemon owns the home now. The staircases in the front n back have no nails they were made using wooden pegs.

I absolutely love this house! I love history so any historical house or building has always been an interest of mine. I love when people have old house and keep a lot of the original shelving and fireplace. I hate when people completely remodel an older home and you can not even tell what decade it is from! I just seen this house in a documentary of harriet Tubman on Amazon prime. Another thing is I cant believe this only sold for 121,300. I couldn't imagine even putting a number on this house, especially one that low. I guess that's what suck about living in California, cause just a room in thos house would sell for over a 100 thought in ca. Any how definitely a beautiful dream home to me
Great "bones" ! Im super curious to see the new owners "new n improved" video. Loved all the "memory" stories. Especially your mothers, about the dinning room. I could almost see myself eating Christmas ham at the table.
Beautiful home. ❤️❤️❤️

🙂 Good tour Maureen 🤔 Lovely house 😊
Woah! The website says its estimated $224,200. I thought it was like $3,000,000 AT LEAST. I live in CA. so I was expecting it to cost more. I wish that house was here and at that price! :D I've seen a REGULAR house for $3.4million
Gorgeous love the mirror not the drapes i would love furnishing it with antiques Alot of original charm too
In ten or fifteen years when I need a house, I need to own a historical home like this. Luckily where I live there is an abundance of those.
What a fabulous piece of history. I saw this house featured on www.oldhouses.com. I'm sure you're sad to see it go Maureen.

I live in Ga. too . I love this house !! I love all the light fixtures . I actually love wallpaper , but I might would upgrade some of it . I even love the 70's paneling . I guess I'm just ole fashion ? I love the red and green , but I've never been a big fan of blue . I think if it was my house I would turn the pool room into a playroom for my grandkids . I love all the closets and storage space , but that's one thing I would upgrade first if it was my house. I live in an old farm house and that's one thing that I complain about all of the time . My closets smells musky all of the time . I can't put none of my sheets in them , because they make them smell bad . My husband can build and repair anything , but I can't get him to fix nothing in our home . Drives me crazy !! lol !! Anyway..... you all were so blessed to get to live in such a lovely house . I hope whom ever moves in the next time takes good care of it and makes some wonderful memories like you all did . Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful house !! Love it !! ❤

May I offer advice on the repairs? Break them down either per room, or per necessity. Make a list of what you need, but don't overwhelm him with them. Ask him if he will give you x hours per week on repairs of projects. Then ask for 1 thing to get done, or one group of things, (i.e. changing all the faucet washers the same time) . Ask him what he will need on the way of tools or parts per project, get his agreement to fix that one thing, then get the parts. Then when he has finished, say, "Ok, all done, let's go play!" (or eat or visit friends or whatever.) don't overload him in the beginning, just focus on that one thing to be done that one day. After a time, all will get done and the house will be as you need it to be. More importantly, the marriage will be intact. As for the closets, maybe you need ventilation holes in them. Drill3/4" Holes along the bottom, and along the top of the doors. Add some screening behind them so critters don't set up house. To test if it is a ventilation problem, try leaving the doors open for a few days to air them out. Close them and open the next day to see if they still smell musty. That will be your answer. You can buy cans of Damp Rid that will absorb odors and place one in each first before drilling holes.
Beautiful house/get some money into it/and it will be beautiful!!!
If it wasn't in such a populated neighborhood I would definitely buy it lol
BEAUTIFUL home! If only I had the money it would be my family's home! I don't even know what state it's in but I would move lol
I can’t believe the sheer quality for the price for that price the most you would get in Scotland is I 3 bedroom terraced hose in a sketchy area

Luv this home wish i was in a position to purchase and restore this property to its grand days is the stories true of ghost in this home.Anyway lots of luck my only option would be rent to own anyway thanks for the great video tour.
Not feeling the wall paper and the red stairs........I'd have to redo that whole thing. I love the idea of chimneys (hopefully operable) in all those rooms!! Overall, although definitely some work needs to be done, a lovely, lovely mansion.
OMG, HOW I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THIS HOME.......
Your home is absolutely enchanting. I'm sure that you're using a realtor to get it sold. Might I suggest that you get in touch with the folks over at Circa Old Houses. I'm sure they'd love to feature your home in an upcoming episode and/or publication. The site is somewhat of an online gathering place for people who love old houses. I'm sure that you'll be able to reach a broader audience of people, many of who are looking for that special old house to make their new home. It's always been a dream of mine to live in a beautiful Antebellum mansion, but I'm not at a place in my life right now to take on such a large home, but I really hope that you are able to find someone as passionate as me to become the next steward of your family home. I think you'll increase the odds of doing so with the help of the folks at Circa Old Houses. Best of luck to you.

Wow❤
I see that there are many resources thst document the history of this property. I am from a generation where the parents of many of my classmates purchased properties during this same era. Some of them spent their entire lives in the same homes and were recently placed into a position where the property had to be put onto the market due to declining health and old age. For me this has been the saddest part as I would prefer to have had one of the children continue on with the legacy. A number of factors including rampant crime along with poor market conditions means that in many cases it takes years to sell the property, there is just no demand.
