Answers to Difficulties: The Lord’s Day with W. Robert Godfrey

Does the New Testament excuse Christians from observing the Sabbath? In this message, W. Robert Godfrey walks us through several passages that some interpret as problematic when it comes to obeying the fourth commandment. Furthermore, he reveals how these passages reinforce the continued relevance of a weekly Sabbath for the people of God.
This message is from Dr. Godfrey’s 6-part teaching series The Lord’s Day: Sabbath Worship and Rest. Learn more: www.ligonier.org/learn/series...

Hello @shadstla I also thought the same. However, if you listened correctly, he is not advocating Sabbathkeeping as in the 7th day weekly Sabbath of the 4th Commandment, BUT for the 1st day of the week, Sunday. 😂 I was unbelievably surprised at such a shocking ending to a what was first a beautiful beginning study on Sabbath creation.❤ Reklamation Ministries

”For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.“ ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭66‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭KJV‬‬ If we will be keeping Sabbath in the new earth why would it have passed away for us here today?

A 7th Baptist layperson, Rachel Oakes Preston, introduced the 7th day Sabbath to Millerite Adventists. Frederick Wheeler, a Methodist Adventista began to observe the 7th day Sabbath. Christ did fulfill the law, however, why do we keep the other 9 commandments and then say the 7th day Sabbath can be thrown out? God does not change. Malachi 3:6. Not one jot or tittlel shall pass from the law until heaven and earth pass away... Matt 5:18.

Because so many want to ignore God and follow the Pope and the Catholic tradition at the same time calling themselves “Protestant”. Don’t they know that Protestant means protesting Catholic doctrine that does not follow biblical teachings. Sunday is the first day of the week and God said the Sabbath was the 7th Day? Sunday sabbath is the command of the Pope not God!!!

Thank you for sharing. Some observations based on what was shared in the presentation: 1. Paul and other disciples kept the sabbath in the book of Acts. Chapter 17 notes that Paul reasoned with the Jews in a synagogue for at least three sabbaths; and in Acts 18, Paul reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, persuading the Jews and Greeks. 2. The passage in Colossians 2, that referred to "meat and drink," when considered in context, it referred to the ceremonial laws, ordinances and sabbath days, not to the law of God and the fourth commandment of the seventh day sabbath. 3. The sabbath is as much a part of the law of God as the other nine commandments; and the sabbath commandment is the only one of the ten that begins with "Remember" and the one that identifies the true God, the Creator. It's also the sign and seal between God and His children that they may know He is God and the One who sanctifies them (Exodus 31 and Ezekiel 20). 4. There are eight references to the first day of the week (what we know as "Sunday"), and none of them intimate that God transferred the sacredness of the seventh day to the first. Thus, He blessed and sanctified only one day - the seventh (Genesis 2, Exodus 20).

If we read Col 2: 16,17 contextually as Dr. Godfrey suggests we will find that Paul is not refering to "The Sabbath" of the Lord of the decalogue. We just have to read Col 2: 14 to see that Paul is referring to the mosaic sabbaths. These sabbaths were established thru Moses written by Moses' hand as a witness against us and were placed outside of the Ark of the covenant (Deut 31:24-26). The Sabbath commandment of the decalogue were spoken by Gods mouth(exodus 20:1) and also written by his own finger(exodus31:18)(Holy Spirit=finger of God ) by the Holy Spirit himself not just inspired and was placed on the inside of the Ark. This shows the immutability of Gods' 10 commandments. God says "I change not." So it is my prayer people will see that Paul was refering to mosaic sabbaths i.e "new moon sabbath" etc. that Dr. Godfrey alluded to as well.

For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:3-11 This is how we make it into heaven By grace through faith Not by the keeping of the law The Law cannot save us and we cannot keep the law The law shows us our sin and our need for a saviour

Remember the Sabbath of creation was pre sin. You would think that if Christ wanted to shift the Sabbath to Sunday He would have said something to His disciples about it. None of them kept Sunday as Sabbath. That is why the debate in the NT is not there. Do we make void Gods law by entering into the new covenant experience? Follow that logic through. How can we live in the spirit of the law without living the letter? Because i have faith in Jesus do i make void His moral law in my life or through the power of His Spirit He writes this law on my heart and then it is manifested in daily life. I delight to do Thy will oh my God Thy law is within my heart. This is the new covenant experience. Paul asked the retorical question, do we make void the law through faith? God forbid we establish it. Christ will never fill anyone with His Spirit and lead that person to live contrary to His law. Makes no sense. God bless my friend.

Revelation 14:7, "... worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea..." Could it be that Revelation 14:7 uses the simular wording as Exodus 20:11, "the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea..." so we remember to worship Him by keeping the Sabbath holy which He established at the end of the week of Creation? If all nations acknowledged God as Creator of mankind and the heavens, the earth and the seas, what respect there could be for the sanctity of human life and all of creation, what a better world it would be. Forgive us Heavenly Father and have mercy on us.

Constantine , Emperor, instituted the Sunday keeping for the gentiles and Saturday was kept Holy by the Jews. And all the converted gentiles that believed obedience to God’s commandment and Jesus example . Again, Jesus kept the Sabbath and obeyed for us all the commandments, knowing that they would not do so, especially forgetting His Holy day. When we will face God at the judgment and He will ask “ why you changed My commanded day Sabbath to keep? What will you say? I listened to men thinking’s and reasonings for changing it” will that do? The keeping of the Sabbath or any other commandment is not for salvation but obedience and sanctification. I am saved by His grace alone and His life that kept all His Father commandments.

Lovers of God don't keep His law to earn salvation, but they keep it because they already have it; and love to God always leads to doing those things that please Him (1 John 3). For when a person loves someone, they will natural obey because they don't want to hurt the other person (1 John 5).

@@mikemccormick9667 Dear friend, I mean you no ill, but you, like many people today, have believed a lie from Satan about Sunday being sacred. Yet, it's not about getting upset about being deceived, but, out of love to God, following what He says in His Word alone instead of the "traditions of men"' that Satan has worked through to instill the error of Sunday. Thus, no where in Scripture is it intimated that it was on Sunday when John received the Revelation from Jesus. Chapter 1 states John was in the Spirit on the Lord's day. Scripture is crystal clear what day is the "Lord's day." God calls the sabbath His holy day in Isaiah 58 and says in Exodus 20 that the seventh day is the sabbath "of the Lord thy God." Jesus said in Matthew 12 that He is Lord even of the sabbath day. Hence, the Lord's day is the seventh day sabbath. Regarding Jesus being raised on "Sunday" and the Apostles supposedly worshiped Him that day. A careful review of Scripture will show this to be false. Yes, Christ was raised on the first day of the week (what we call Sunday); and in Scripture a day begins and ends at evening (Genesis 1). However, the Apostles were not worshiping Jesus on "Sunday" because when some of the women came to tell them that Christ had risen, their words to the disciples seemed as "idle tales" and they didn't believe them (Luke 24). They were also not worshiping Jesus because they were in hiding, with the doors shut, for fear of the Jews (John 20). For they, still in disbelief, thought they would suffer the same fate as Jesus, and thus, hid from the Jewish leaders. For they also knew they might be charged with the "missing body" of Jesus (Matthew 28). Also, the Apostles didn't believe and worship Jesus until the second day of the week (Monday) because that's when some of their "hearts burned within them" when Jesus revealed Himself first to those two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). After Jesus then left them, they returned to Jerusalem to tell the rest of the disciples that Christ had risen indeed. Yet, they still didn't believe until after Jesus appeared to all of them, ate some broiled fish and an honeycomb and then "opened their understanding." Yes, God knows your heart, but He also winks at your ignorance (Acts 17). You didn't arrive at this juncture in your relationship with Him by accident. His Holy Spirit is working with you and God is calling you to "come up higher" and keep all of His commandments, including His seventh day sabbath, out of love to Him (John 14). As far as emergency workers, Christ left them and us an example where He performed many acts of healing on the sabbath day and rebuked the Jewish leaders for them willing to get a sheep out of a pit, but would not lift a finger, so to speak, to help someone in need on the sabbath (Matthew 12). With that said, one should not go out of their way to "emergency work" on every sabbath as a practice. Yet, there are emergencies that arise, and God would expect a person to offer aid in order to save life, even if it was His sabbath day. On a personal note, I've heard of people who did perform emergency work on the sabbath and chose not to get paid for it (i.e. they donated their wages for that day to someone else in need and/or to a charitable organization). The reason this Sabbath and Sunday question is vital is because the Sabbath and Sunday shows to whom a person is loyal - God or Satan. Sunday belongs to Satan through his Catholic Church (Revelation 13), while God's seventh day sabbath is His (Genesis 2, Exodus 20, Revelation 14). For it is about a day because honoring one or the other shows to whom we truly love and obey; and this shall come to a head in the near future when Sunday is legislated into law (Revelation's "mark of the beast") and citizens are mandated to honor it instead of God's holy sabbath. The time is now to honor God and His law, including His sabbath, out of love to Him because to procrastinate about it will make it that much harder to trust and obey God when one is threatened with fines, imprisonment and death for failing to honor Sunday when it's made the law of the land (Revelation 13).

It is concerning that you tell others to forget the only commandment that says remember. You point out that the law shows us our sin, but you don't mention the obvious: that the law is love. love for God and love for our brother 1 john 5 : 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? matthew 5 :17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. james 2 :10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. Rev22: 13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Rev 12: 7 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. there is also a warning in mark 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. He spends and entire session in another video showing that creation was where the sabbath was first established, before man sinned, then makes the statement in this video that if the sabbath was not applicable in the new covenant that seeing that the sabbath was important that the apostles would have for sure made direct quotations concerning it but yet he abandons all of that over Colossians 2:16 and try’s to use it to void the 7th day sabbath and replace it with mans tradition… even less evidence for Sunday observance… this is a shame. Acts repeatedly give evidence of Paul keeping the sabbath so did Jesus… it’s no wonder, he advocates for Babylon at this point, speaking of fermented wine in communion service…

"Answers to Difficulties: The Lord’s Day with W. Robert Godfrey" (Sorry for the VERY long "comment". But I believe it NEEDS to be espoused) Kind Sir...the 4th Commandment of God...is one of the most debated and argued fights; until this day. For the Sabbath for Jews, choose "Saturday'; most Christians choose "Sunday" and the Muslims choose "Friday". But the funny thing, when looking at that fact; is the names of the 7 days in a week, did NOT come into being: until after God gave Moses his 10 commandments. And worse; the Israelites could NOT work on any day for up to 100 yrs. because they were in a wilderness and desert; being fed Manna for 40 yrs. And another possible 60 yrs, BEFORE they came to their "Promised land". Before they could start plant crops and harvest it. Worse; calendars then; were far different than our western calendars. So there is NO way on this earth to discern WHEN was the 7th day happening. But it gets worse. As time went on, most people do NOT work; but 5 days in a week. Yet the 4th Commandment says they MUST work 6 days of ever week; and ALL every year. And there was no exceptions. Like "vacations and holidays", etc, that can be up to 4 days. Like "Thanksgiving days" and "Christmas Days". Etc. And worse; less that 200 miles east of Sydney Australia is the Universal "Day line." Where the day switches. So think about this: you worship on Saturday. And you are flying west over that date line; going to Sydney. Which is Sunday once you cross that line. And other people who worship on Sunday; will cross over that line with you. Now how are all of you to determine the right sabbath day? Huh? And finally. Because I have done that myself. Now...IF... Your wife wakes you up at 5 in the morning; VERY sick; and she needs to get to the hospital now. So you jump out of bed and turn on the lights. And that electricity is made by employees who are working. Then you pick up your telephone and you get dial tone. And there are people working to give you that DT. Then the 911 employee sets up your wife going to the hospital. And the ambulance comes and takes her to the hospital. And there are many employees waiting to help your wife. And they do it and save your wife's life; and you are bawling and praying that Jesus will save her. And they did it Praise Jesus! Now I ask you: Which one of those myriad of employees disobeyed God's commandment 4th? Huh? I DON'T think so; of my loving Jesus! So consider this: the 4th commandment did NOT tell us when it was to start. And He gave NO names of the 7 days. So do you suppose...that one group can begin working on Monday, but another one begins on Sunday, etc. So IF they work full 6 days and the next day, regardless of what it's called. And they then worship on that next day, regardless is their Sabbath; is obeying God's commandment? Huh? I think so.Praise Jesus' Holy Name. Finally: I have been retired for 26 years. And I have not hit a lick of work; ever since and I love it. So I worship Jesus, who IS God every day, of every week. No kidding. Now, do you believe I am disobeying Jesus? Huh? I don't think so. End of Story and I rest me case... ..In any case kind Sir, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN!.

Secondly, if you knew your history, you'd know that the catholic church proudly claimed that THEY are responsible for the change from Sabbath to sunday. THAT should tell you something. Check out thier "Catechism of the catholic church". The Bible also says (I'm paraphrasing) you are the subject to the laws of who you obey. @@Psalm119-50 According to Scripture, the seventh day is the "Lord's day." God stated in Isaiah 58 that the sabbath is "my holy day." Jesus stated that He is Lord even of the sabbath day (Matthew 12). Thus, the "Lord's day" is the seventh day sabbath that John was in the Spirit on when visited by Jesus on the isle of Patmos (Revelation 1). Regarding that passage in Colossians 2, when carefully studied in context of that chapter and Colossians, it referred to the ceremonial ordinances and sabbath days (that were nailed to the cross), not to the law of God and the fourth commandment of the seventh day sabbath. For if the law of God was "nailed to the cross," then humanity is now free to take God's name in vain, dishonor one's parents, steal, etc.

Conspiracists - especially from the SDA - love to blame Constantine and the Roman Catholic Church for changing the sabbath from Saturday to Sunday when, in fact, the change from sabbath observance to Sunday worship began centuries before either existed. Although Constantine made Sunday the official Roman day of rest (in 321AD), doing so merely facilitated what was by then a widespread, centuries-old, majority Christian preference in the western Roman Empire for worshiping on Sundays. The earliest _clear_ reference to Sunday worship is found in the _Epistle of Barnabas_ (c.120), I which the writer says: “Your present sabbaths are not acceptable to Me… we keep the eighth day with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead”. Note the antisemitism already creeping into the church. Justin Martyr (c.140) wrote of “memoirs of the apostles” being read on “the day called that of the sun” alongside the “writings of the prophets” ( _First Apology_ 67). Many others also wrote of Christian worship on Sundays well before the 4th century; and of other Christians who continued to worship on Saturdays.

He is the door to the sanctuary; Jesus is the door to the Kingdom of heaven. He is the inner court surrounded by white linen; which is symbolic of being covered Christ prefect righteousness. Jesus Christ caused the sacrifices and their oblations to cease, (Dan 9:27) by his one perfect sacrifice. In contrast to the time of the Gentiles, wherefore the sanctuary of God is trodden under foot for forty and two months. How so? This church who calls herself the mother church, claims to be *the door* to salvation. And the white linen surrounding the inner court is the righteousness of Mary and the saints of the Roman church. She claims that Christ sacrifice and Atonement for sin was not sufficient, for she instituted seven (works) sacraments. She through infant baptism makes a mockery of the rebirth of the new man. Her Catechism thinks to replace the inspired word of God. Her prayers to dead saints and to Mary, thinks to replace Christ work of intercession at the altar of incense. Hers is a false spirit which thinks to cover the light of truth. This beast and her king think to change times and laws of God. And goeth into perdition.

@@larrybedouin2921 I'm simply setting the record straight as to what history attests, which is contrary to SDA claims, in particular. Since you want some scripture to consider- Taken as a whole, the New Testament is unequivocal in its support for the Christian observance of the Jewish sabbath. For example, Jesus told his disciples to pray that when the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place, their flight not be on a sabbath (Matthew 24:15-20). Jesus clearly anticipated sabbath observance continuing until the end times. When writing to gentile Christians in 48AD, the Council at Jerusalem noted: “from early generations Moses has had in every city those who preach him, for he is read every sabbath in the synagogues” (Acts 15:21), indicating the letter was being sent to sabbath-observing congregations that included gentiles. In Acts 20:7, the breaking of bread refers to the evening meal after the sabbath was over. Acts 20:11 confirms that Paul departed at daybreak the next day. Taken together, the clear implication is that, after preaching on Saturday night, Paul's intention was to depart on Sunday morning - not to observe a Sunday sabbath. The offering referred to in 1 Corinthians 16:2-3 was not gathered during a worship service. Indeed, the text strongly implies that what was set aside was to be stored at home - not brought to the worship service for collection. For Jews, taking up collections at a sabbath service was (and still is) offensive. The Apostle Paul - the apostle to the gentiles - regularly observed the sabbath (Acts 13:14 & 42-44; 16:13; 17:1-2; 18:4-11). After at least 15 years’ Christian ministry, Paul declared: “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I offended at all” (Acts 25:8), meaning he still kept the sabbath. Although Romans 14:5, Galatians 4:9-10 and Colossians 2:16-17 are often used to claim sabbath observance has been abolished, it is far from clear that the sabbath-observing Paul was referring to the _weekly_ sabbath in any of those passages (note that none of them refers to _the_ sabbath). In Romans 14:5-6, for example, the concern is whether one should fast on certain days, not with sabbath observance. Galatians 4:9-10 concerns the observance of other dates in the Jewish calendar. Note that the weekly sabbath isn't mentioned. Similarly, Colossians 2:16-17 concerns _a_ sabbath, not _the_ sabbath. In Revelation 1:10, the reference to the Lord’s day does not mean Sunday. Once again, it at most means after the sabbath was over. It may also be just another way of saying 'the day of the Lord'. The ISV translates it that way.

You miss the point, the Law did not begin with Moses, the Law was established from the beginning, including the Sabbath. The Law was reintroduced to Israel at Saini after Moses was sent to rescue them because they had stayed for 400 years under pagan Egypt and adopted Egyptian customs and norms which were contrary to God. God wanted them to remember his covenant with Abraham who according to the Bible kept God's commandments. It was imperative for Israel to be reminded of their everlasting covenant with the lord, and this covenant new or old has Gods commandants as the key identifying component. Your theology is not correct sir, the ordinances were done away with yes but the moral and health Laws still apply. The One sabbath day aside the ceremonial Sabbath days still applies.
