Should a Christian observe the Sabbath? - Tim Conway

Should a Christian observe the Sabbath? I should have expected this one would come up too. Ah, I thought about this one. Is this going to get me in trouble?

You're going to need more then a little one sentence comment to prove that. If you believe God's word is wrong, which is what Tim has used, then defend your point with scripture.

I can't remember when an apostle chosen by God can override the written commandments of GOD Himself. With all due respect brother, Paul's letters to the gentiles were controversial in most part and even Paul confirmed it how controversial his writings were. Secondly, the same Paul most people like to easily quote kept the Sabbath! Yes, read that again. Let us not be guided by imperfect writings of men who acknowledged that they were in need of admonishments from God. Let us be ruled by the eternal word of God which clearly states in Exodus 20:8 "REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY". Just for the sake of clarity, the Sabbath day is the seventh day of the week-Saturday. God bless you.

I think, keeping the two commandments of Jesus is better than keeping the Sabbath. Keeping Sabbath but not love thy neighbour is as bad as not keeping the Sabbath. Jesus said he did not come to do away with the Sabbath but he wanted his followers to observe all other days like Sabbath too....they must live holy throughout the 7 days of the week and not just Sabbath only.

Too bad that God didn't have the foreknowledge to know that Jesus would change the day of the Sabbath when he commanded all his children to keep His Seventh-Day Sabbath as a Perpetual Covenant throughout all generations forever till the end of time in Exodus 31:16-17 When Paul said don't let anyone judge you I'm pretty sure he was talking about men not God LOL.

Gentiles would only be judged if they tried to keep the Sabbath, especially if they were not circumcised. Jews and Judaizers hated Gentiles trying to observe their practices without officially becoming Jewish. I think a more careful reading of Colosssians is needed in the response here.

Colossians chapter 2 English Standard Version: 16Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.17These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.18Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, .... In most churches, there are false prophets who only care about money. Jesus hated churches, they pissed him off so he preached in the hills and the streets amongst the poor, crippled, and disillusioned by the Pharissis. The "Sabath" is a Jewish thing and "Sunday" is a Christian thing to remember the last supper and sacrifice of the Lamb; a day of brotherhood and breaking bread. Sabbath is Jewish and if you read Colosians 2, 16;17 you will understand the difference. "Saturday" is not the Jewish Sabath, Saturday is the day to worship the Roman god Saturn. Jews went by the Lunar Calendar, not the Roman Julian or Catholic Gregorian which we used today. So in Orthodox Jewish tradition the "Sabath" can fall on different days (Mon, Tues, Wed, etc) in different years depending on the Lunar calendar, not the Roman one.

It was a shadow to point to the time when you could finally rest from your work because Christ makes you whole. Everything in the law was a shadow of something greater fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He has entered me into the sabbath because he has brought me into the resting place of God, the most holy Place, because he has made me complete in him. Nothing i can do can complete me, so now i rest from my works as God rested from his because Jesus made me whole.

The apostolic writings MUST be read and interpretted through the lense of the Tanak (old testament). You can't take a verse like Col2:16 (which means just the opposite of what Tim Conway says) and make a whole new theology out of it. You have to read the begining of the book first and interpret the end from the begining.

To make this even more clearer to our readers, I'm going to clarify a little. The bible says: Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his COMMANDS and do what pleases him. AND THIS IS HIS COMMAND: to believe in the name of his son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as HE HAS COMMANDED US. Those who obey HIS COMMANDS (which are: to love others, and believe on the name of his son, Jesus Christ)......

@RemixtLatino Oh, I agree, there are other days in which people were to rest on, which were considered to be a sabbath of rest. However, the phrase in Colossians 2 is undoubtedly speaking of weekly, monthly and yearly celebrations. the weekly sabbath, the monthly celebrations, and yearly celebrations. The yearly celebrations were considered to be the things that happened once a year, the monthly, once a month, and the sabbath was weekly.

The contract is still there to be viewed anytime, it's not destroyed, its not gone, but it no longer has power over either party. It's still around for learning, but it can no longer dictate to the person what to do, or what needs to be done, nor can a person come under the punishments listed in that contract. The person is no longer bound by it because it's been completed. This isn't anything sneaky, it is an example of the first covenant in the scriptures.

Hebrews 4:1-9 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. 3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

You see, if they had truly received rest on the seventh day, would God really have spoken of another day, calling that day today? When we come to Christ, he makes us complete in him. He makes us whole, he justifies us, pardons us. We're complete in him...and when Christ does that he raises you up to sit with him in heavenly places, where you can truly rest everyday.

In Isaiah 66, it also mentions the new moons-do you keep the new moon celebrations? Read Isaiah 66 again-it says they will meet "FROM ONE SABBATH TO ANOTHER"-that means everyday will be hallowed before the Lord, not just the sabbath. Otherwise be consistent in youe interpretaion and begin keeping the new moons, because it says "from one new moon to another", as well.

@FireFly1499 Did you know that the phrase is used around a total of 8 times in the bible? And when I reviewed the other 6-7 times it is mentioned in the scriptures, I learned that it meant the seventh day sabbath, considering it was related to the showbread that was performed every seventh day. That is one of the things that clinched it for me since the bible is not up for private interpretation, it often reveals itself what things mean.

The Law differs to The Book of Ordinances The Law was written by the finger of God in stone. The "Book of Ordinances" (Ceremonial Law) was written by a man (Moses). The 10 Commandments, the Law, was placed WITHIN the ark (Exodus 25 verse 16, 21 & 22) below the Mercy Seat (26 verse 34) The Ceremonial Law (of Ordinances) were placed IN THE SIDE OF THE ark (Deuteronomy 31 verses 24 - 26) The Law, placed below the Mercy Seat, is permanent (of God, by God). The Ordinances were temporary (of man, written by Moses himself).

Isaiah 24:1, 3, 5 (KJV) Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. ☝️ What everlasting covenant? Ephesians 2:15 (KJV) Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; ☝️ The Commandments of Moses, written by him spoke of Ceremonial Laws. The Law of God speaks to the 10 Commandments. If the Commandments of God are done away with, then Romans 7:12-14 (KJV) Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. ☝️ The Law is Spiritual (of God) The Law contained in ordinances were of flesh (written by Moses). The 10 Commandments still stand... it is the Sabbath that people wish to do away with, but want to keep the 7th commandment, Lest any man should come at their wife, or any woman come at their husband.

@Myhopeisinhim : That is only the Biblical lunar months or "moonths" based on the 30-day cycle of the moon that God set in place by the lights in the sky and which Yeshua kept all of His life. Would you criticise a Gentile for not keeping Gregorian months, (which ignore Hod's 30 days and put 28, 29, 30 & 31 days instead)? So why doubt that a True Believer would keep the God-ordained Boblical calendar made up of "New Moons" or "new months" every 30 days? 🙃

Ellen white taught that the sabbath was the greatest command, but that is not what Jesus said, nor did Jesus quote two of the ten when asked what the greatest commandments were in the law. It's also interesting to note that when asked about "the law", he never asked which one for the sake of the listeners. There was only one, and that was the book. The book of the law, also called the book of the law of God.

I detest sin, I may fall because of my sinful nature, but I desire to follow the law of Christ. I don't desire a sinful life. My life was so radically changed when he came into my life, I couldn't even begin to contemplate returning to how things used to be. the circumcision command is still in effect today, except it's not the circumcision by the law that is important, but circumcision of the heart. The circumcision a person needs cannot be fulfilled by human hands, it is something that only God can perform in the heart spiritually. It is done in the Spirit rather than with human hands. The same goes for the sabbath, the sabbath or rest you have for today is not something that can be accomplished by human hands, but is entered into.....

@danpants24 One of the mistakes people make is to assume that sinning is sole transgression of the law: Rom 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because [he eateth] not of faith: FOR WHATSOEVER IS NOT OF FAITH IS SIN. The bible tells us that sin existed before the law was given, and the above verse explains exactly how that was possible.

spiritually through Jesus. You guys look at the letter, thinking the sabbath can be fulfilled by simply choosing not to work, spending time with family, and worshiping God on the seventh day, as the letter speaks of, like others do with circumcision, thinking it can be fulfilled simply by cutting the foreskin. Neither of these can be accomplished in the flesh. People look at the letter to dictate how these should be fulfilled, and completely miss that it is fulfilled in the spirit, not flesh

They focus so hard on keeping the law, and thinking that doing so shows love, they miss showing people many other ways that love can be presented, shown. Things they can do that will touch the heart of those around them. To be honest, just because someone doesn't steal from me, murder me, covet my possessions, commit adultery with my husband, that still doesn't mean they love me. Those may be some examples of what we might not do IF we love, but not doing them doesn't mean you love that person

@RemixtLatino Lev 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day [is] the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work [therein]: it [is] the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. Just like the other feast days, the sabbath is a holy convocation. If the phrase in colossians was never used anywhere else, and never shown to mean seventh day sabbath elsewhere, then I would consider that you were possibly right, but it is shown to mean seventh day sabbath before.

By warning against the right of the false teachers to "pass judgment" on how to observe festivals, Paul is challenging not the validity of the festivals as such but the authority of the false teachers to legislate on the manner of their observance. The obvious implication then is that Paul in this text is expressing not a condemnation but an approbation of the mentioned practices, which include Sabbathkeeping.

@danpants24 Okay, so are you admitting that laws do not actually have to be written by the finger of God in the decalogue to actually be part of it, they just have to rightly fall under one of them listed, right?

@Myhopeisinhim 2Ch 2:4 "sweet incense", "shewbread", burnt offerings", "sabbaths", "new moons", "solemn feasts" Not the 7th day Sabbath there. If you refer, or care at all for the verses I took time to share here, you'll know this has nothing to do w/ the 4th commandment.

by the word of God in Heaven we are Going to Worship God and honor His precious Sabbath Isaiah 66:22,23 "For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me ,saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.23 "And it shall come to pass, that form one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the lord."

@RemixtLatino And the same with what I've mentioned:) In time the truth will be made known. I just pray people will wake up before it's too late. You don't think the sabbath is a shadow, and you think you've shown me that it isn't, and I believe the sabbath is a shadow and have given you the reasons for why I believe the way I do. Time will tell. I don't think we have much longer to wait, eh. His return is very close.

@Myhopeisinhim Big difference is you won't find any of the other sabbaths blessed or practiced until after sin. Yet the 7th day Sabbath and both blessed and sanctified before sin. I guess that means nothing to you though.

The book of the law which contained ordinances was placed in the side of the ark. The Ten commandments were placed inside the ark under the mercy seat between the two cherubims. Exo 25:21 And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee.

still have food back at your house. You don't really need what you wanted to buy anyway. Maybe even allow them to come into your house and clean up? offer them a clean set of clothing? Dress their wounds, etc. This is the kind of love Jesus was talking about. Self-sacrificing, thinking more of others than of yourself. Putting others before yourself, as Jesus did for you when he died on the cross. The love he asks of you is greater than anything you can find in the ten

@free0fight The Holy Spirit convicts me, sin isn't just of the ten commandments, it goes deeper. Even a good deed can become a sin when done for the wrong reasons. Even something that isn't technically a sin can become a sin when not done in faith.

Exd 16:28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? Exd 16:29 See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. Another reason he gave the sabbath was: Deu 5:15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and [that] the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a......

@JacobGboy: Have you heard of the Peshitta? Some believe it to have been written in Aramaic, the language Yeshua actually spoke in. Peshitta Hebrews 4:9 says, "It is therefore the duty of the people of God to keep the Sabbath." What if this is the proper interpretation? Then what will you do?

Hey Trina:) In Hebrews 4 it does mention that there remaineth a sabbath-keeping for Gods people, but what day does it indicate in the chapter. Heb 4:7-8 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, TO DAY, after so long a time; as it is said, TO DAY if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. The day that Christ makes us complete is the day we enter into rest..let that day be today:)

"Wherefore my sentence is that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and [from] fornication, and [from] things strangled, and [from] blood. For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day" (Acts 15:1921). As you can see, the Sabbath day is specifically named in the Apostalic Decree. ALL 10 Commandments were a foregone conclusion.

You enter into his true rest the moment you believe and Christ makes you complete. He isn't in the habit of making you incomplete again. You are brought into his resting place, into the very resting place of God. The very throne room of God because Christ prepared the way! Each day you live, is today! You never live in yesterday, you never live in tomorrow..Today is the day of salvation, today is the day of rest. Will you enter in?

@Myhopeisinhim So this I'm very curious about. While you're giving me references to ordinances and book of the law of Moses stuff, what exactly do you do with the Scripture I posted some hours ago? Pretend they're not there? - You know that they revealed the truth about Col 2, and your verses. - You know they soundly established the law won't change - You know they said the Sabbath commandment remains to the people of God - You know God is righteous, and now u kno so is His law from beginning

Thank you brother. This teaching is Absolutely correct. The word of God is truth. Isaiah wrote of the days when the Law shall be written on our hearts. Col 2:16 spells it. The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth. People tend to forget that the Lord built His Church. He did things forbidden on the Sabbath and declared "The Sabbath is meant for man and not man for the Sabbath" .For those who still keep the Sabbath, just remember to keep it to the last tiny bit or its death. Thank you Jesus.

@Myhopeisinhim Neh 10:33, thats fine if it was done on the 7th day Sabbath at one point. What has that to do with the commandment. The commandment does not say anything about shewbread. Reminds me of (I know you're not one of them) SUNday keepers that try to say that because ppl broke bread on the 1st day that all the sudden its worship service, when ppl broke bread everyday back then :/ The connection is not strong.

Intercessor. Who will intercede when Jesus declares "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still." | Revelation 22:11 There are various verses that reveal something you are not considering at all.

@kell4809 - Sabbath can be found 115 times all throughout the entire Bible! I'll keep it! The rest can do what they wish, but I truly feel this is why He will say, "Go away from Me, you never knew me at all!"

The fact that no one is shown as having kept the sabbath, nor do we see any command of the sabbath given in the book of Genesis, and we see the bible tell us that it was made known to Moses, shows us that it wasn't given before. The bible tells us that the law was given to the unrighteous man because of the hardness of their heart, and their unrighteousness. We also see this being the case regarding the sabbath to.......

the way you separate the law out the window, and some new specifics come into the equation. It no longer becomes about what is written by the finger of God, or by the finger of Moses, but rather by whether or not you can fit it into one of the ten. SO which is it, is it by what God wrote and what Moses wrote, or is it by what can be connected to the ten as the means of separation? The book of the law is the book of the ten commandments, it can't be separated from it. You take the book away....

@danpants24 Rom 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Rom 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. This verse shares a few things, but two I want you to look at are 1) Sin existed before the law 2) The people between adam and Moses sinned after a different manner than Adam.
