The layoff question can be a great opportunity. I have been part of a layoff (the last group to be laid off in a company now no longer in business). I treat the question as if it is "how do you handle a personally catastrophic event?" This can be an opportunity to talk about resilience and problem solving, and how instead of getting "stuck" you find a way to move forward. Employers like having people whose response to crisis is seeing opportunities, as all businesses have their moments of crisis.

I wish I had stumbled across your site much earlier. I retired from the military after a 33 year career to join the civilian sector. I now work from home as well. Your first few comments on "take the leap" truly hit home. Great advice to anyone else thinking of a massive change. As a WFH employee now, I have "LMAO" at a few of your shorts. Bang on! Well done, and keep it up!!

Being in the workforce for a number of years, I tell my Team I don't ask you personal questions and I'd like the same consideration. I cannot fathom why anyone needs to share any personal info. It's a workplace not a family gathering. Just my opinion that we all deserve personal anonymity.

I really relate with this. I find that I am the best person to deal with my own issues. And I'll often socially retreat to focus on my own mental health. So what my friends and co-workers see is either me being super positive and supportive... or they just don't see me much at all.

I LOVE your content! I relate to so many of the things you have said and many of your skits are unfortunately a reflection of my corporate career. As I have watched so many of your skits I often wonder if you have been my work bestie in another life LOL. after 40 years in the corporate IT world i’ve been retired now for five years but still enjoy your content. i view it from not “how should i behave/react” but “how should i HAVE behaved/reacted”, sort of recapping my former work life. many of the topics or issues you cover are not new but have antecedents in decades past. tbh, this new pro-employee philosophy would not have flown in the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s. i’m glad to see it happening now. keep up the good work edu-taining us all. ps maine and new hampshire are great places to visit, too.

I live in california if there are questions you'd like answered. About confidence, I can attest to that. It really does depend on self knowledge. Also, there are so many worse things that can happen than someone making fun of you or whatever, so once you brave that, people just become people.

For checked luggage, my dream luggage is from Briggs and Riley. They are pricey, but once you read their warranty, you'll be sold. (They cover damage from their workmanship, but also anything the airline does to it.)

I agree with you. I would like to visit BC. Definitely Canada in general is a wonderful place to visit. Toronto itself does not offer Nature. I am 2 hours outside of Toronto, and maybe BC tops my area with beauty, but ON has just a very different kind of beauty. I have many avenues for hiking, swimming and kayaking.

I love your comment, and I can totally relate. At a period of life I did care too much about what others would think of me, and I had to really reflect about my own personal values and personal priorities, even here on KZread. There is this very interesting book about the “Top 5 Regrets of the Dying”, and number one is “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me”. It is definitely worth to live a life with no regret, by accepting who we are and sharing that side of us with the world 💕

For the sick question, I generally tell my manager if I will be offline or if i am online, I try to get through my meetings or whatever and try to not talk as much as possible and let my sales guy take the lead. I may clue my sales guy in that I am sick too, depending on how bad it is.

In regard to "decision/ritual". ALWAYS SLEEP ON IT. And I mean 'go to bed and go to sleep and then wake up." I also adopt a 'devil's advocate' approach. Especially when I arrive at a decision or when a decision is 'obvious'. I allow myself a night's sleep. When I awake, I adopt the mental position of the 'opposite point of view'....the devil's advocate. I live my day as if that position was 'natural' to me. Over the course of the day, as the issue-in-question crosses your mind, keep this position as your 'default approach' to the thought process. You may discover new aspects to the decision. Sometimes they reinforce your original thoughts. Sometimes they don't.

After working at one job for a few years, most people have "built up" a few weeks vacation time each year. When interviewing, most companies will only offer 'one week vacation to start', putting you back on that same ladder. How do you factor this into compensation negotiation? Do you just go for an increased salary, or do you push to start your new job at your previous vacation level? They company always hides behind 'this is our policy'. I see no labor law that supports such a policy. TIME is the one thing you cannot purchase. I believe those vacation weeks are worth much more than a typical week's compensation. PS: I have found a solution to all of the issues you raise here on this channel.....I retired. Now, my time is my own. I cannot stress how much it will improve your life to get away from the employment cycle.

MOST companies offer one week vacation to start? In the white collar world, that isn't true. It's more like 2-3 weeks/year. Which I still think is not enough, for the record, but no one should take a job with 5 vacation days a year!!!

I don't know if it my area/industry (I'm STEM cambridge UK), but on the redundancy/layoff question, as someone who has been had this occur twice (and served a third) in an 11-year career, none of the interviewers have ever seen it as a negative. Often, they've had it happen to them and know what the market is doing, so they almost see it as "normal".
