Just had my first today; while it's not pleasant the Nurses are excellent and will put you at ease and it's a breeze if no inflammation or obvious problems ... please don't worry! No pain relief needed as it's a simple test, but they can give gas & air or sedation if you do want this x

Dr. Cooper, thanks for your videos and the humor. I watched many videos to prepare for my first colonoscopy earlier this month. I had been using the Cologuard test for several years but the last one came back with positive genetic changes, so my MD recommended a colonoscopy. The prep was actually very easy to do. Starting about 5 days prior to the liquid diet, I began reducing or eliminating raw veggies & fiber foods per the GI doctor's instructions. I was given a split Miralax bowel prep with two Dulcolax pills. I used clear water enhancer drops for the prep solution and it tasted fine. Lots of jello, some chicken broth, electrolytes with water, clear sodas (sweetened with stevia - I don't have digestive issues with this plant-based sweetener), and black coffee (oh, how I missed having cream for a few days!) There were 5 polyps removed: 3 in ascending & 2 in descending. The lab results were that 1 or more was an adenoma and the others were benign (hyperplastic). The results did not say where the adenoma was but it seems to be from the ascending colon, per your info. I will need to return in three years. And for my colonoscopy, I chose no sedation. For several reasons: I wanted to watch the exam. I had no desire for sedation medication side effects & I can drive myself home. My appointment was for a Monday afternoon, so I had the day off from work and didn't lose sleep the night before. There was a some pain for a couple of minutes from the air filling my colon, mostly in the descending colon while the polyps were being removed (no pain from the actual polyps removal). Just kept focused on breathing through it. The team was so caring and efficient.

@@MarkCooperMD, can you make a video on capsule endoscopy. Because most of the time when problems occur in small intestine. Doctors perform endoscopy, no results, then colonoscopy, no results, then narrow down to a dye test through endoscopy. In these cases I believe capsule endoscopy is a better option. Regarding this video it's highly informative. Thankyou.

Hi Dr Cooper, is Epsom salt a good alternative for a bowel prep before a colonoscopy?

Definitely a strong no. The electrolyte balance in bowel prep is to prevent injury to both your colon and your kidneys. Excess epsom salt can harm your kidneys.
