Another Walk on the Beach

Join me looking for rocks on a northeastern lower peninsula Lake Huron beach.
Some of the rocks you will see in this video:
Petoskey Stone - Hexagonaria ~360 million year old fossilized coral.
Favosites - another fossilized coral, sometimes called "Charlevoix stone"
Horn coral
Cladapora - another fossilized coral
Puddingstone - a conglomerate rock
Gowganda Tillite - This stuff is over two billion years old.

Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

All those banded stones, the ones that don't tumble well, would look nice on an outdoor window sill or in a rock garden. The bands don't show as well when they're dry but you get to enjoy them whenever it rains. I have a flower pot with a small jade growing in it. I covered any visible soil with smooth, rounded flat.....ish stones and get to see all those pretty bands each time I water it because they show better when they're wet. Maybe you could do something like that for your wife? Oooo, better yet! A rock garden with a water feature!!

I have wanted to make a birdbath or a bird bath with a pump to pump the water out of the birdbath and over the side. I just haven't spent the time to find out how much it would cost to have a big boulder moved to my back yard. It might happen someday.

Michigan Rocks Yes, and then I'll get to live my dream, through your videos, lol. I've always wanted to have a yard with a water feature to display all of the rocks I've collected over the years. I don't have access to all those fantastic 'pebble' beaches like you have, though.....that I'm aware of, anyway! Gonna do some research over the winter months...thank you, Google Earth....to see if I can find some that aren't too far or too difficult to access, like you had suggested!

My husband and I just love your videos! They are done so well and we always feel as though we're right there with you. Rocks are natures jewels, for sure. After watching many of your videos, you've inspired us to buy a rock tumbler, grit and a few pounds of rough small rocks to tumble. At age 68, I've wanted to buy a tumbler for years so you pushed us over the edge with your educational gems! Thank you so much. You have to be so proud your videos have had so many hits. Not only are you a teacher, who by trade has a great impact on young lives, but you've impacted so many online and continue to do so. Please know you are appreciated and we look forward to more videos. One more thing, I noted a couple comments in other videos about Yooperlites. I've just discovered them online recently and had to buy a couple small ones off eBay. They are a hoot! But are totally unrecognizable unless you flash a UV light on them. Many of the rocks you pass look as though they could be Yooperlites. Maybe take a UV light with you next time you're out toward sundown. Best wishes to you!

I think those rocks are called mudstone. Please don't be offended by this, but I consider coating the rocks with something like polyurethane cheating. I don't really want my rocks coated with something. I can get a matte finish or a little better on those by tumbling. That being said, I don't mind at all if you coat your rocks. I also appreciate the advice even if I don't take it.

Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: I admire how you only harvest rocks you're going to have a purposefor...leaving stones for those who forage after you. You and I have that in common. When I rockhunt...I meditate at the site first...give prayers thanking God for the day, my life, and my safety. Then I meditate on the wondrous magnificence of our Earth and thank her for the gifts I will receive that day and renew my vow to be a good Earth citizen and have as little impact on the site as possible. I try to make reparations where possible as in picking up trash and filling in holes where appropriate. I hunt thoughtfully. When I'm done...I repeat my meditations and prayers...thanking God for the day, my safety, and my life. Then pay respect to the Earth for allowing me to walk amongst beauty and for gifts received. This may all sound silly...but added depth to my experience. It was like a balm to my soul and eased the bruises inflicted by a toxic society . It healed my body as I exercised and breathed fresh air. I enjoy reminiscing about it now. Thank you for a opportunity to share about my rockhounding style. I highly recommend simple respect and gratitude to deepen your rock hunting experience.
