Unfortunately, I had to put it down, keep your faith, and push forward. Homesteading and farming is hard work, and it takes perseverance trusting in God.

I totally understand your pain & disappointment. We recently had a similar tragedy last week. Last year, we got the perfect barn kitten. She met all of our wants & needs. She was a beautiful long haired calico. We named her Jewelee. Her mother was a feral cat & Jewelee was born outside. Her mother taught her litter to hunt as soon as they could get around. They were in the same environment with the same risks. Like you, we learned from the tragedy. We are not going to give up having another barn cat. We are going to make changes before we get another one. We are still very sad but we are going to move forward. Thank you for telling your story. People need to know the challenges of this lifestyle.

Jason. Dude. This breaks my heart. We just started sheep last year, and about one month in our ram got stuck in the fence netting. Found him very close to death, but somehow he recovered. Just as easily could’ve ended up with a loss. We did have a trail cam up, and for no reason at all, he just plowed into the netting in the middle of the night. He had been getting zapped for about four hours when we found him. Since then, no other issues with the netting. Up to five healthy sheep now. Hope to get into pigs soon! Y’all have been so inspiring for just about everything on our littlehomestead. Keep up the good work.

Hey, I am sorry that it did not work out, but I figured I would let you know how I successfully had goats around electric fence for the last 10 years. I never used the netting but I used the poly wire which is pretty much the same without the chance of them to get stuck in the fence because there is just less of it. I would also propose have the goat/sheep in a hard fence (cattle panels/combination panels) along side the electric fence. We would let the goats out in the electric fence to eat grass in the morning then feed them a little to get them back in the hard fence at night. The hard fence would be permanent fence but you could have the electric fence be temporary and move it around the hard fence and just opening the cattle panels when needed

That sucks Jason, we also have 4 sheep going into our second year now. They graze like yours within an electric fence during the day but we always bring them back to a barn , secured overnight. A handful of sheep text gets them to follow us anywhere. A slightly larger “sheep tractor” within their fence would work as well, additionally providing shade during the day & a secure bed at night. Don’t give up on them, we’ve had a lot of joy raising ours.

You might try again later with 3 strands of poly wire. We've been doing poly wire for almost 3 years with our kathadin flock. We invested in a marrema/pyr lgd and he lives with them in the paddock. It's good to have a wether to lead them. We rotate every 4 days or so. The poly wire is super easy with reels. We use net fence only for temporary times when we need to hoof trim or inspect and when we are moving them. They respect the net fence because we did good exposure training with them, so we don't have to electrify the net fence any more. It's purely visual for them now. Also, if they have a shelter in the paddock, they have a place to run to when spooked. Our terrible experience of losing a dog to a hot net fence taught us how important thorough training is.

Sounds like an issue with the electric fence. The fence show only shock, but with low amperage, it should not kill. If it tangled and choked the animal, then you need cattle panels or something like it to corral the sheep.

Oh yeah, and we tried the netting for weaning the lambs from their moms and the same thing happened (netting flattened by flying lamb hoofs) - the only fencing they really respected was the solid fencing (we have both cattle fence and sheep fence)...hang in there, you do livestock really well

Hello Jason, my sympathies are with you. Before we moved from Oregon, we had milk goats, one first freshened doe and a doeling that we raised to the breeding age and bred. The doe was a great milker and the doeling was due to kid for the first time. I woke up at 4 that morning and she was struggling very badly to breathe. We lost her less than an hour later 😕. It was a terrible taste in our mouth, but that’s part of it. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. The losing sucks, but the knowledge is the bright light of the situation. We haven’t gotten goats again, not because of the loss, but because we aren’t there yet with getting the farm back in shape for the stock to be safe.

Sorry the sheep did not work out this time. I ditto the trail cam idea. Something substantial is scaring them.could be deer. Does NOT make you a bad homesteader . Red cabbage saurkraut is good too. ... Easy cabbage dinner.....Put your favorite sausage, bratwurst or whatever in a saucepan. Put some potatoes (whole small ones or cut up in chunks bigger ones) on top of the sausage. Then put wedges of cabbage on top of the potatoes. Add a bit of salt and about 1 to 1.5 cup of water for a 3 qt. saucepan. Cook until potatoes and cabbage are done. To spice it up a bit, use a hot spicy sausage. It's a meal. So good and so easy. ❤

Condolences with your loss. It never gets easy. I lost one of my goats in electric netting. I still use netting and have had no issues since. May you all feel better soon.

I'm so sorry! That is really defeating. I lost a couple goats the same way and will not leave goats unattended in net fencing ever again.

No failures Jason. Only a difficult learning experience. You now know what you are not going to do the next time. Maybe a cage type system like Ben made for Miah. Lorraine, your high tunnel is producing like crazy. You really have a green thumb. Thanks for sharing. Y'all have a Blessed week.

No failures. Just major learning curves. Yup, set up cameras. Then possibly a different fence within your fencing. Sorry for your loss but someone will help you figure it out! And good on Loraine! She rocks!!

The problem with sheep is getting them to survive their own stupidity. I never saw such a critter for self annihilation.

I know it is more expensive and less flexible, but we have fenced and cross fenced our acreage into small 1 - 2 acre pastures that we rotate through. We never had good luck with netting. Sorry for your loss.

We lost our first batch of layers to our local fox family. I do understand the loss and yet determination to learn and grow.

With our sheep, we had to build permanent fenceing, as with sheep if one jumps off a cleft all the other sheep will follow. We made connected fenceing so we could move them from one pen to the other as they ate down each area, We had 3 all in line so it was easy to move them back and forth

Me and my lady have rehomed 500+ animals and lost 5, those 5 make it seem like we did everything wrong, when in reality we’ve done everything right. Keep your head up. Only thing to do from here is learn. God bless

Sometimes lessons learned are not always happy ones. Sorry you had to deal with such a great loss. I’ve made some doozies myself that I’m not proud of. Thanks for having the strength to share so others can learn also. You guys put so much hard work into what you do and that’s something to be proud of. The “why” always gets me. I still can’t bring myself to cull. I know I will need to someday for sure. I will take your advice and remind myself of “why” and maybe that will motivate me to learn. Thanks for all you share.

So sorry for the loss. Couple of beefy boys would be good to eat all the grass you are growing.
