I find it strange that people cheer and clap their history and heritage being destroyed 🙄, I worked at a coke plant that was built in 1843 and the last oven push was in 2014,I worked the night shift on the morning it was due to be closed down and the company that owned it invited the locals up to watch the historic moment,cheers clapping and smiles as a local business dating to the Victorian era closed its doors with the loss of 200+ jobs all local men from the neighboring village too 😅, completely baffled me and I left feeling they hadn't a clue on the heritage they'd just lost 😔 This stack should have been left as a monument to the men who built and worked there! They aren't just chimneys,they are links to and reminders of our past industrial might and the dedication of the men and women that made it possible.

Would that be Monckton Coking Plant near Barnsley by any chance? I remember them blowing up the ones at Smithywood Coking plant in Sheffield near where I live. That was back in 1987. It used to stink so it wasn't really missed kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYSHttWee8bQebg.html

It is sad to see our industrial heritage being destroyed in a matter of seconds, these monuments should be preserved. Keep up the good work mate you consistently put out great content 👍

The Land around the former mill & channel is earmarked for Housing, Lets hope it includes social housing as well. For a chimney to be proud and erect for over 120 years + is as you say a tribute to the workmanship of years gone by, But like every big large erection eventually it will became a deflated and flacid memory. It's hard & stout protuberance a warming memory for future discussions . 🥒 🥒 .

So sad. Another piece of our past gone. We need to be reminded why such structures are important and why they were built in the first place. They brought prosperity to some but many of the men and women who lived and worked in those industrialised areas very often lived in poverty and had short, brutish lives.

As a kid i recall having a cup of tea in Fred Ds back Garden with my Dad who knew Fred a little bit. in my 20s I often saw Fred up and down the M65 in his old land rover

It is amazing how long this chimney stood. As you said, survived two world wars and preceded the Titanic. When things are around so long, I hate to see them go! Shame it had to go, if it actually had to. Thanks for capturing this for us. Yes, those bricks must be worth having. ☺️😌

This brought back some memories. As a child in the 70's my dad took me all over the North of England to see many of these Chimneys brought down. At the time I was too young to realise the significance.

I worked for English Heritage back in the day (2004-2005) and at they time they seemed to be very concerned with preserving the industrial heritage. I'm surprised a beautiful old mill would be allowed to be demolished like that. How very unfortunate. Same thing with the chimney. Surely the value of these old structures goes beyond utility.

Think it’s down to money.Sadly. My parents visited Chesterfield Cathedral yesterday (the crooked spire). Fabulous place, ruinously expensive to run, like all such places. Today we know the price of everything but the value of nothing. The Crooked Pub or even that Sycamore tree as two perfect examples.

Another great document, cheers for sharing! Two youngsters put on the High-viz a managed to walk into our Aussie rules Grand final two years ago, great effort!

One of my friends parents lives at the bottom of the road Hertford mill was on, and another friend at college used to live in the now demolished flats round the corner. I remember litter picking for the council about 10 years ago as an agency worker and kids where wandering around the mill before it was knocked down and going on the roof. The Chimney by the M62 at milrow is ellen road steam engine from memory, we visited when I was at school 30odd years ago.. Having looked you can go in on sundays.

The Chimney that was smoking at the end is Ellend Rd Mill it is the last working steam mill working and the first Sunday in every month they have it open for the public to go in.

@wanderingturnip Sadly it's the powers that be in Oldham who are destroying our town's last embers No consciousness what so ever I love Oldham, but it's a skeleton of what it used to be

Loved the fact you worked chimneys and mills into this video consistently especially when they were done together

I remember watching the powerstation Chimneys coming down at Ringley. Also i actually watch the great Fred Dibnah bringing a chimney down just outside Bolton. Great spectacles but sad in a way. Great footage there Dave👏

Fred would’ve had that chimney in that trench easy. Even he said though that he didn’t like doing it because it’s erasing history. Just think about the time, money and man power it took to build and then maintain it. All the steeple jacks that had to ladder it countless times over the years.

Heartbreaking! Great video once again, shame it had to be to say goodbye to yet another historic landmark remembering the glory days of our industrial revolution. 😞Cheers 🍺

I went all the way through the mill from top to bottom and crawled from the boiler house and actually stood inside the chimney stack looking up at the sky when I worked for Oldham Council about 15 years ago

I didn't realise they were pulling down the old Rock Nook mill near Littleborough. But reading up on it it seems that they've had to since it's collapsing.

i used to live in a cottage across the road from that mill in littleborough, it has been empty for many years, i didn't know they were demolishing it.

Oldham, apart from being a disaster zone in its urban centre, also hosts probably the worst busker in the North. He's quite young and can't carry a tune for love nor money. People pay him to stop.

Loved this, Fred would have too, they are our history and deserve the reverence you put on them. So sad that all this lovely history is being lost with the march of so called progress. Like Stoke and the hoardings put up stating new squares and apartments, but the money given to improve, is lost to sideways ventures and companies that never provide. I admire your stance for our our lost history and I love your passion. Well done!!

Hi mate new subscriber here from Oldham itself. Just letting you know there was another mill next to the Manor called Kent mill that was knocked down in the 90s. Some good pics on the t’interweb. Growing up in 80s I used to spend all my time playing in and around the old mills and think it’s sad how one by one they’ve all gone especially the chimney stacks.

I tried getting in that Mill last year and we nearly did, but the further we got in it was really dangerous so we came back out. A bit further down there is a house with some old cars outside ones a TR6

You've got to come and have a look at Leigh Spinners mill, it's a fine example of a mill that's being put to good use, embracing its heritage and is thriving!

Ellenroad Mill at Milnrow in steam first Sunday each month is the mill chimney smoking at tge end of the film..worth a visit. My grandfather was night stoker at the mill back in the day, his job to stoke the boilers and keep them burning overnight ready for steaming at 6 am each morning.

An absolute triumph of a video yet again. Already looking forward to the next one.

hi this chimney reminds me of the one what use to stand next to the english sewing cotton company mill in belper derbyshire although the mill still stands [that was built in 1912] the chimney had to be destroyed as it was unsafe. but the mill is a great site as you enter the town from matlock but there is still a mill and chimney on the A6 at cromford belper. really enjoy the videos but this one was a little sad to see our history gone but at least you have a record of this great old mill chimney thanks for your videos.have a great week

We had a holiday and stayed in a village called Crich near Matlock and I think I remember the mill you are talking about on the main road. Lovely area Derbyshire. Cheers from Queensland.

The smoking chimney is at Ellen road steam museum. Its open the first sunday of the month . If its smoking you know the steam engine is operating. There was a classic car show in the grounds this morning . But of a washout though unfortunately .

I've been living in the shadow of the Hartford Mill chimney since 1971, so sad . . I miss it 😢.

just to clarify: i: hartford mill chimney was never listed, it was the mill, listed in error instead of hartford works, 200 yards up the road. took ages to de-list. ii)manor mill is a fully functioning warehouse, used by ultimate products. they sell populard branded household goods. iii) the chimney in milnrow is part of the ellenroad steam engine works. the largest still working steam engine in the world. worth a visit.

I met Fred Dibnah back in the early eighties. It was during a day out with my grandparents to Bakewell (I think?). Nice bloke. My grandad was in the Royal Engineers as a lad, so they had a good natter. On your Bolton upload you mentioned having an interested in finding industrial history. If you head to the other side of Huddersfield from you, there's the National Mining Museum. There's also the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a touch to the south. You could probably visit both in the same day.

Hi Dave. Another cracking video - thanks. I’ve just had a weekend in Carlisle and wondered if you’d considered visiting the city. The architecture within the city walls is really varied and interesting and the (not too depressed) shopping area is surrounded by buildings that would benefit from your detailed inspection! The big bonus for visiting is two cracking chimneys just outside of the city walls. Well worth a train journey IMHO. All the best mate. Paul

Manor Mill looked gorgeous 😍. Really liked it's chimney. Great footage of the chimney demolition.

There is a chimney at the bottom of Edenfield Road/ Spotland Bridge.. if you go around the back of the mill you can actually go inside the chimney..

I got to sit with FRED for well over an hour as he and his second wife had been put in a room to meet and greet and sign books if any had got them with them. This was at The Steam Farm down in Devon. I had also taken a photo of my home built Steam Locomotive which he took great delight in hearing of its construction. The mob eventually found and only got a few minutes with him.

You should make a video about Wainhouse Tower in Halifax, it is actually a very posh Chimney. Sir Henry Edwards, A wealthy neighbour of Wainhouse, made complaints about the smoke nuisance caused by the Dyeworks, leading to a feud between the two men. John Edward Wainhouse developed the idea of building a chimney 350 metres up the hillside from the Dyeworks, connected to it by an underground flue. Wainhouse had a good appreciation of architecture and determined that the chimney should be an object of beauty.

I live in Oldham and I'd just watched your Bolton video and thought, you'd love Oldham! The algorithm is working!!! Love this stuff, you'd be great actually working in a Council and taking all the stuff you've learnt from visiting these areas and talking to the people to understand what they actually want and the consequences of each initative thats launched.

There's also an area called Walton le Dale where Cromwell got a savage slap .

hey David Burnip guess what there is an old chimney in Melton Mowbray on Thorpe road where the old hospital was and its being turned into flats and houses. its fenced off but i think you can still admire it quite close up. let me know if your coming to take a look and i can come and show you where it is... bless you.

Near where I live in Bedfordshire we had the Stewartby Brick works and they had like 20 large Chimneys some were knocked down in the 70s and then the brickworks closed in 2008 about 6 very large Chimneys stod until 2021 when they got blown up You would of loved it large brickworks with 6 very large Chimneys near a railway with a bunch of borded up buildings Those Chimneys were a landmark of Bedfordshire you could see them from the railway and when I saw them I knew I was home And like you said about early memories those Chimney stacks at Stewartby were mine like the mill was to you Now they are building new houses on the land

In florence italy if you buy a building in the city centre youre legally responsible to maintain and repair as it was origionally. Its important to keep our physical history we should spend the money on renovating these magnificent peices historical structures . We could reuse theae buildings !

Love your work. Hope you have steele capped boots with your hi vis and hard hat kit.

If you get a chance it might be worth taking a trip down to Swindon. From what I have heard about 25% of the shops in the centre are closed down.

Nothing like your heritage getting blown up🙁
