Another crappy Cat Engine (3208)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the 3208 turbo that is in our TR 96 new holland combine. Its starting to cause trouble. Think the fuel pump is starting to go. Have to bleed injectors more and more each time we have to start it. Gets worse everytime.

I remember when they used the 3208 the transit style school busses. If they were geared right. They ran like a champ for sure.

Had a 3208 in the 30 ton farm truck that hauled everything, did regular maintenance and never had a single issue. The truck had over 130,000 miles and always started on the first crank.

I never saw any manufacturers engine that didn't have to be maintained. The problem is that people always have time to rig the crap up to keep it running but never time to fix it right.

@@Northern_Farmer And? Any 5.4 Triton I have had has had to have the rocker arms replaced. Oddly enough, every Duramax I have had has gotten stuck in limp mode. No engine is perfect, every engine has to have a weakest point. For the 5.4 it was rocker arms. For the Duramax it's always computer-related. For the Powerstroke it's almost always the glow plugs. And unfortunately for the 3208 it was the fuel pump. Just be lucky it wasn't tapered crank bearings or dropping valves... It can always be worse

We had these engines in a fleet of cement mixers back in the 1970s. They have bad overheating issues and would blow the head gaskets. The mechanic have one of these on the engine stand rebuilt all the time because he was constantly having to change them out.

I think I would replace the governor shaft seal. They will such air in around the shaft. First indication is haveing to bleed at startup. Next they will start to die when they idle down.

I have riden in a few school buses back in the early 90's with this motor. Those buses would go from fremont ca to san jose, santa cruze watsonville and gillroy without any trouble. The only time there was an issue was with an overheating issue that the driver had indicated to me that the mechanic was looking at while I was waiting to take off for home on a friday afternoon.

Just got my first 2 about 2 years ago in a boat. 425hp versions. Just had the first issue almost looking like this video in the beginning part. But much worse. Mine has major blow by. Like the amount if you reversed your hoses on a shop vac and vaporized the oil as it shoots 10 feet out the crank vent. Def a hole in a piston I believe. If anyone knows anyone in the clearwater florida area that knows these cats please let me know. 🙏 BTW this was not the engines fault. It was an inexperienced captain who drove with 20 feet of rope around the prop coupled with 10" play on the water pump belt. He used 30 gallons more fuel than the other engine on a relatively short ride...at night. Smh

Another thing I was oging to add. If I was able to drive I would even get a current ford f250 f350 or f450 and get my hands on a cat 3208 and have it installed with a manual transmission. The cat 3208 can from what I have seen outlast and outperform any of the powerstroke or any of the newer diesels that are being produced on the market today.

That is the hand primer pump on the fuel line. They are a problem because the seals will fail allowing air into the fuel system.

A carter rotary vane pump similar to this. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000CIQ5DG. Napa carries them, no need for the high performance version standard pump works fine.

naw, its a fuel leak. just replace all your soft lines, banjo crush washers, ect. kit shouldnt be to much, and it will fix your issue. if it were the pump you would have issues while running.

Not necessarily. Have a mk1 Clio with a leaking injection pump. Very difficult to get running once it's sat overnight, but the second it's running, despite the first 30 seconds misfiring and smoking, it runs fine. But on an old diesel with air "leaks" the first thing I would do is exactly what you said, replace all the rubber return hoses (had those start leaking on many of my our old diesels). Edit: oh wait sorry your post is over 5 years old... oh well.

They are a fully mechanical engine usually with no onboard electronics, no cylinder liners, fairly high maintenance and with their own quirks like most engines. Like anything, maintain it well and it will last. Fuel pumps are expensive items for these, but a lot of the other parts are pretty cheap. Fully cast iron heads/block with gears so they are extremely heavy for a big 8 cylinder 10.4L with just 375hp (with turbo) output. If you had a 210hp version, the question is .... why bother?? Some early versions have a cast iron camshaft which sucks! Later ones were forged.

Depending on the application.. My dad worked for a Caterpillar dealership about 20 years and could get a marine 3208TA to turn 475HP. Said it was not pleasant to be in a pleasurecraft next to one (or 2 in this case) while it was running, but it would do it.. He built a lot of truck engine 300's that were just T models, most NA engines were 210, and were more or less a dog. Turbos and aftercoolers were where it's at on the 3208, according to him, but different pistons, rods, camshafts, injectors, ect were needed for major power changes.. I'd talked to him a lot about putting one in my Chevy truck, and that was he told me about them. Said maintenence was the key to keeping them alive. In the end it was cheaper for me to just rebuild my 6.5 GM, add an aftercooler, and what not, than to repower with the Cat, but it would have been cool.. lol
