I agree. Germans are nothing special. I work with Germans and find in many ways they are grossly inefficient.

SC ST ko job doge toh kaha India me engine banega, Shame even after 75 years of Independence India cant make it own production working Engines of tank , planes, fighter jets and even Train Engines technology are foreign copy and some are directly made by Alstorm. All genral class top minds of the India work in the foreign countries like USA Germany France japan and other European countries while most of dumb heads work in India government companies because of reservation .

Guess what, now our government will woke up and will push up the engines that had got developed by drdo for frcv. Atleast now, our indigenous program will get more push.

Lolz tata doesn't even have its own engines in cars and truck 😂😂😂😂 thry use Cummins engine. And Cummins is an American company. The problem is no private indian companybhas ever joint ventured with russian companies like maz yamz which makes military vehicles engines for russian army. Its so sad that even after 75 years off independence we are still dependent on simple hardware like land system.

Indian Army doesn't care about Arjun anyway so they might as well wait for Datran engine, even if that means a 1 year delay. Investing in Datran now will actually help speed up future armored system projects so it is double benefit.

there has to be a 5 year program where the govt pumps the equivalent of the current defense budget for R & D every year. we need to develop basic capabilities and do it fast. Turkey is leading in drone tech, south korea has a better defence industry than us. War is serious business and the preparation for war should be on a war footing.

Our procurement and product development process is License Raj we never got rid of. Army has to decide every minute detail including engineering details instead of telling the Product Developer (DRDO) it needs to offer X amount of reliability.

india is strong in this type of field, indian army should must accure this type of indegenious platform and test thing regerousely

This reinforces my view that we can only depend on ourselves. Whether it is tank engines or heavy torpedoes or anything else, we have to have our supply sources at home.

We have Cummins India, they are pretty solid engine manufacturers. We should contract them and make them develop a brand new engine whose IP is registered locally in India - (Namo Bharat trainset model). Cummins US would actually encourage a move like that.

@@libshastra Cummins is American company, it making engines for tank will challenge General Dynamics engine in M1 Abrams tank, GE will withdraw from jet engine deal if that happens. Only way this can be successful if GE or Cummins buy each other in huge amount that it won't make profit difference for them.

India's critical weaknesses such as 'Engines' Technology - Aero or Tank or Navy - to be strengthened rapidly by research for future needs of sustainable supplies for India's military purposes.

If we go forward with equipping the DATRAN 1500 to the Arjun Mk1A, how long would it take to make the deign changes and test it? Would it be earlier than when we start receiving the MTU engines?If remaining tests on the engine is done by the time design changes are finished to make the engine fit, would it be feasible to go ahead with the plan?

Need to work on two things parallelly 1) start negotiations with German companies if required, involve governments from both sides 2) Start the design for integration of indigenous engine with Arjun Mk1A and try to minimise development time of the new engine. Give them commitment for Arjun Mk1A / mk2 follow on orders (beyond 118 units)

Our folks will figure out something, many genius people are there. This could be another hard push for next steps of Atam Nirbhar Bharat.

Germany is behaving like a girlfriend with too many tantrums.

Do we not include the delivery duration in contract? When companies acquire contract they must know penalty for not delivering on time.

Arjun Mk 1A was offered the latest MTU MT 883 engine & RENK HSWL 295TM transmission. But it seems for somehow reason, India had to go with same MB 838 and RK 304S of Arjun Mk 1. And Germany needed time to restart production. Instead of waiting India is going for indigenous one.

This blow May be help to develop our own engine 😂😂😂. don't take it negatively ,time tells you who is your reliable friends!!! And how to deal this situation with indigenous equipment 😮😮😮

India should develop own engines. For the time being Cummins can be used, even big engines of Cummins are reliable with good supply chain in India.

Now Indian Army will go for tank engines from mars and will keep on testing arjun mk 1a for 100 more years on jupiter.

An IC engine, unlike a jet engine is not beyond India’s capability. Many Indian private sector firms like Ashok Leyland, Kirloskar, Mahindra, etc. have built globally competitive engines. They have decades of experience in building IC engines. DRDO should drop the development of an IC engine and outsource the program to one of the private Indian firms. MTU and Cummins are also private companies. Somehow, we don’t want private Indian companies to make a profit on Indian defence products but don’t mind if foreign private companies make a profit.

When we go through the news of weapon development by India, it feels there are four different countries involved in this 1) Army, 2) DRDO, 3) Manufacturers and 4) MoD It is so frustrating. GoI has a huge annual budget. They should spend few lakhs to arrange meeting of these entities so that they can work with better coordination

I think your reportage is pretty incomplete. The work on Datran 1800hp was started in 2010. It was being developed in collaboration of various companies of competence in engine design like BEML, Kirloskar Cummins, Mahindra etc. It was being envisioned to be used for Arjun Mark III. So even if delayed it is better to develop indigenous platforms rather than unreliable foreign partners who can play politics in times of war.

Given how long the Indian Govt. takes to make any decision and place orders I am not surprised they are running into such issues. Western companies are private sector companies that are answerable to shareholders and they cannot keep their production lines open forever while the Indian Govt. makes up it's mind. Very different from ordering something from Indian Public sector companies which are answerable to no one. This is similar to the 404 engines for the Tejas where GE has to literally reopen their production lines for India. Reopening any production line is not a cheap endeavor.

There are no short cuts. Till India wont understand there are no friends or foes in Poltics and international affairs. There can be only tactical understanding with international affairs.
