Annonaceae Fruit Review / Comparison - Soursop, Cherimoya, Sugar apple & Atemoya

Hello everyone, in today's video we are going to review and compare some of the fruits of the Annonaceae family.
The Annona fruits I am reviewing in this video are
-Guanabana aka. Soursop, Graviola (Botanical name: Annona muricata)
-Sugar apple aka. Sweetsop, Anon (Botanical name: Annona squamosa)
-Cherimoya aka.Chirimoya (Botanical name: Annona cherimola)
-Atemoya (Botanical name Annona atemoya)
What do these Annona fruits taste like?
-Guanabana - Taste is sour/sweet. Many people say it tastes like a mix of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mangos.
-Sugar apple - Taste is very custard, a mix of tropical custard. The taste is very sweet and almost no acid (sourness).
-Cherimoya - Taste is very sweet, no sourness of all. Taste like just pineapple and mango with a mix of other tropicals fruits, a very strong sweet taste to the fruit.
-Atemoya - Taste can range from sweet and sour. A hybrid of both the cherimoya and sugar apple, its taste in some of them is more similar to a cherimoya but still has the same sweetness and custard taste as a sugar apple.
My favorite fruit that I tasted in this video would be the Spikey Guanabana as it was very sweet with little to no acidic taste, also the meat to seed ratio was incredible. I also love atemoyas but the ones I found here in Colombia seemed to be not as up to par as some named cultivars we grow in Florida such as 'Phet Pak Chong' or 'Geffener' atemoya.

What I like the most about sugar apple, is that from seed to plant to fruiting it takes only 2-3 years. Thus, planting all of the seeds in containers and letting them fruit to taste the ''new'' variants and keeping the tastiest not only it's doable but it also happens really fast.

Thank you for showing this comparison. I've been googling and even asked a you tuber with a custard apple what the differences were between sugar vs custard apple. He said he wasn't sure. I appreciate you breaking this down to simple terms

Custard apple is far more coconuty than sugar apple. Though it is possible to find sugar apple with a bit of coconut taste, I actually have one, usually sugar apple don't have a coconut flavour mixed in there.

Great video! Can you tell from your lifetime experience. Which are your annonas ranking in flavor wise? Not only this video but in your lifetime experience. I’m also wondering how good is sugar apple, because it has so much seeds that I’m not sure if I should grow them. Thanks 🙏

Hi, thanks for this informative video! If you can bear a little bit with me, I have 3 questions for you. 1) How does the taste of the Annona Reticulata and Rollinia Deliciosa compare to the 3 annonaceae fruit that you've just reviewed? 2) Which Cherimoya variety has the sweetest taste? The Cherimoya that you reviewed is the 'African Pride' variety? 3) If I grow an Annona tree from the seeds, would these produce fruit? I've read that Annona tree grown from seed may or may not produce fruit but I don't know if this is accurate. I am from Malta and grafting is not an options because these trees do not exists. I would like to try and see how these behave. Thanks and keep it up :)

That's giant spiky soursop, omg! I would love to get some seeds from that. I just tasted my first cherimoya and it tasted like a mash-up of all the Annona's to me. Sweet, but a touch of tartness (i guess that would be the pineapple taste). The sugar apple is way sweeter than all the Annona's I've tasted so far, imo

Loved the video. I'm in Florida, and getting my first annonas, a couple atemoya seedlings, in the mail soon. I've seen from several sources that the annona seeds are poisonous. Are there any alternative uses for them aside from planting?

Hello thanks, Annona seeds can be grinded up in a blender into a powder and can be used as a natural insecticide . Don’t eat the seeds although if you do nothing bad will happen if you accidentally swallow a few- I’ve accidentally eaten a couple of seeds here and there of sugar apple and atemoya ( like 1 or 2 ) and nothing happened - but I don’t mean to do it on purpose and if anything I avoid swallowing seeds.

Great video! Greetings from the Philippines!!! Sugar apple and soursop are well established in the Philippines having been brought by the Spaniards from Latin America during the Manila Galleon trade era. Cherimoya and Atimoya are also grown here. How were you able to bring fruits and plants from Colombia? I thought the US Customs is strict with regards to these things. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Well done dude. Enjoying the videos. We get cherimoyas in the market from USA as well as Chili depending upon the season. USA fruit always top notch. Unfortunately, none of the fruit from Chili are even edible. They seem to ripen up fine, but are just horrible tasting. Any idea why? This is really bad when trying to get people to try new fruits. No way will they try them again...especially when they are very expensive. Thanks!

  • @gardenflorida

Thank you Jay I appreciate the support. I believe from Chili all the way to the USA might not be ideal, as you have to harvest them too early to transfer well that distance- by the time they arrive here from Chili they probably don’t have much flavor due to picking them to early. This is probably why they taste horrible.
