All about the Atemoya tropical custard fruit (Annona x Atemoya)

Hello everyone, in today's video we are going to talking all about Atemoya fruit.
The 'Atemoya' is a hyrbid between two other tropical fruits - the sugar apple (Annona squamosa) crossed with the cherimoya (Annona cherimola). When these two fruits are crossed we get the Atemoya.
The atemoya fruit is special because of its traits from both its parents the sugar apple and cherimoya. The atemoya is able to grow in both highland and mountinous regions such as California - as well as lowland regions such as Florida.
Unlike its parents, the cherimoya (Annona cherimola) has a hard time growing in lowland regions such as Florida, and prefers highland mountain regions such as California. On the other hand the other parent sugar apple (Annona squamosa) prefers to grow in lowland regions such as Florida and has a hard time growing in highland mountains such as California. But growing atemoya solves both of the situations because it is able to grow in both lowlands and highlands.
Atemoya has its comercialized varities such as my favorite 'Phet Pak Chong', 'Geffner', 'Lisa', 'Priestly', 'Bradley', 'Tim', 'African Pride' - just to name a few. But there are many atemoya varities being bread as we type this and as atemoyas gain more in popularity amongst humans.
Atemoya also has the ability to grow, and produce heavily in a pot. This is great for those who are limited on space in their yard or simply cannot plant in the ground. Growing atemoya in a pot is very easy and can be rewarding as well.
Atemoya is not too picky with its soil, it can grow in various of soil types as long as it is amended well with compost and general plant nutrition. I reccomened a simple mix of 25% peatmoss or cocopeat + 25% perlite + 50% premium potting soil mixture such as Foxfarm or HP Promix. You may also add compost as a top layer.
If you are looking to fertilize your atemoya osmocote is always a simple fertilizer that works well with atemoya trees.
Atemoyas can vary in size, texture, shape, and color depending on the parent crossage. The best atemoyas taste very chewy, sweet and are juicy. My favorite atemoya varitiey is 'Phet Pak Chong' developed in Thailand. It is very chewy and meaty - reminds me of eating a jumbo sugar apple.

I just had my first taste of Atemoya today, and WOW! It was SO good!! I don't know what variety I had, but I'm definitely going to get a tree. Are all the varieties easy to keep small? You first recommended Atemoya to me on Facebook when I posted about fruit trees that can be kept small.

Your videos are pretty informative. Thank you. Just one question. Can I grow sugar apple in partial shade? In backyard I am getting only 2 hours of direct sunlight and remaining time dappled light due to trees. How many hours of sunlight do they ideally need?

I'm also in Florida. What is your favorite cultivar of Atemoya, and do you know of a place I could buy it? I only really have space to grow one and I was told that some cultivars aren't as good as others.

Love your videos!❤️ I tried these for the first time exactly one year ago. I liked the taste so much that I decided to plant the seeds. I ended up with 3 seedlings that are doing ok I think, even though I'm not sure if the Mediterranean climate that we have is suitable for them. They're probably a little smaller than they should. The thing is, I'm actually having doubts whether they're sugar apples or atemoyas. Where I bought the fruit they were labeled as cherimoyas but I'm almost sure they weren't. (We don't have this fruit here in Greece) When I bought them I thought they were all sugar apples but thanks to your videos I realized that cherimoyas, atemoyas and sugar apples are all different species. My fruit looked a lot like the first atemoya you tried in this video. Could I perhaps email you you some pictures of the little trees and tell me what you think? I even have a picture of the fruit that their seeds came from. Many thanks!

Thanks for the support! If you would like you can send me a photo of your seedlings to see what Annona they are, Atemoya seedlings usually have a variable outcome in their leaf size etc. My email is GardenHarleyFL@gmail.com.
