It doesn't matter how many iterations they make of Anne Of Green Gables, this version is THE standard: the best cast, the best chemistry between members of the cast, the best adaptation... simply the best! How I adore Richard Farnsworth's Matthew, and Colleen Dewhurst's Marilla. What treasures they are in this.

I admit nothing like this version of Anne of Green Gables is the best. I wished I had gone to visit "Prince Edwards Island when I had a chance but can't due to my age. I loved how Sullivan who produced this mini-series was so wonderful and went by the book version too. Loved it then and NOW!

@@Trogdor1365 That's really true. You can see from this scene that Marilla is sympathetic to Anne's feelings, but she also feels Anne needs to be taught how to behave, in order to get along with people. She is being what psychologists now would maybe call an authoritative parent. I can't remember whether the scene is in this movie or the next, but there is one after Matthew's death where Marilla tells Anne "I never loved you any less than he [Matthew] did." And it's wonderful how Anne's and Rachel's relationship recovered after this rocky start. She became almost a third parent to Anne, especially after Matthew died and she moved in with Marilla.

She has turned thinking one thing while saying something quite different (for the sake of manners, mostly) into an art form. She's not so much repressed as deeply self-controlled. I really love her, and Colleen Dewhurst played her to perfection. ((Murilla is also in several episodes of the "Avonlea" TV series (made in Canada). It's a great series. There is one episode called "The Materialization of Duncan" that gives deep insight into how, deep down, Murilla really feels about being a lifelong spinster. For years I never saw the ending or got to see what happened at the end I only got to see like half the storyline and it made me pine to know what happened? Did she end up with Gilbert or did she marry somebody else or what happened?? Years and years later as I am 37 I found out what happened me and mom watched it together cause she didn’t know what happened either and I was nuts about it and my sister-in-law bought it for me and I went bonkers

Barbora. I am chuckling at your spelling of Anne’s name. In the book Anne hates her name, but insists if she has be called Anne, it must be spelt with an ‘e’. So by spelling it as Ann in your original comment you committed a cardinal sin as far as the character is concerned, almost as bad as calling out her red hair. The books are great, and I highly recommend you read at least the first one. Megan Fellows did a wonderful job, but to really understand Anne you need to read the books.

I think the reason they were so big on wanting a boy is because they simply felt like a boy was built to do hard labor on the farm and in the fields while a girl typically isn't built for such work. I'm being general here. In the midwest where I'm from the women are certainly built for such work.

Yes. Farm labor was the only reason they even wanted to take in a child in the first place. Not only are boys *typically* better built for hard farm labor, but in that time it was also just a matter of gender division. Able or not, it just wasn't something that "well-born" girls and women were "supposed" to do, just like boys were just as able to make a cake, but that wasn't what they were "supposed" to do then.

Well it was customary as well. Marilla being the head of that house and being unmarried was not the way things were back then, and there was no security or safety in that life, though in Anne's fictional world, this wasn't the devastating position it was for so many women..so having a boy to take over was mandatory and customary on many levels. This book is truly ahead of it's time lifting up females and their strength, showing the world what a better world with independant women could look like.

As if with special respect without having done anything at all in life or with themselves, like they have as much quality opinion as a mature person. and at the same time held back like babies from the adult world ( not sick adult fun world, but career, family and responsibilities)until adults have time to haphazardly deal with them.

@@happilyeverafterhanna pretty sure if you live in the west you do NOT live in a civilized area! Modern western civilization most definitely does not treat children in a civilized way . They arent even safe from pedophiles. Abuse, particularly sexual abuse is rampant and abusers barely punished so children are not safe. Children are isolated from adult society and left babied and unprepared even when young adults. They are exposed to crass language and crass ideas . And rarely afforded an apology when mistreated like Ann got from miss Linn. You somehow think our society is civilized with all the barbarian lowest class behavior going on and probably think women are free because they can go to work for industry and thats the pinnacle of their lives. Like believing women are free rather than USED by the medical industry for profit through abortion. Western society definitely isn't civilized today on any level. Life has been reduced to the lowest level of functioning. The use of manners is largely what makes a society civilized because it shows the care people use when interacting with each other. Today manners are scoffed at and the law of the jungle admired. We have really done our young people wrong in today's society and values

Isolating them in a baby world out of adults way is established. You forget here that Ann got a very thorough apology. People will say shit all the time. Ann wasnt some small child either. Kids today aren't treated like they're human. Adults don't have time to bring them into the adult world. They stick them in schools and in front of tablets and phones in the never never world of 'social media' fantasy . Its isolation and isolation is death to kids. They need inclusion into the grown up world they're trying to learn about like they're supposed to. And in today's perverse adult mind, that doesnt mean flaunting sexuality and telling them they might be trans or gay. Adult world doesn't mean X rated. It means knowledge and skills. work and responsibility. Open your own eyes. Kids dont want to be lated in the head by nice people like you who tell them they're 'special" and walk away. Well nobody is special without a reason. It makes nice people who don't want to be bothered feel better. Grow up. Kids want reality not fake games. Conflict resolution is a valuable lesson and skill. Linn was rude, that wasnt denied, but ann got a very adult and thorough apology herself. Anyone who pretends kids have more respect and love today than back then, or as exemplified by this story, is a fake person who doesn't want to see what life kids have today . With the sexual exploitation, Isolation into the school baby world, and exclusion from responsible adult life today, kids have seldom had it worse. Definitely not better than that period of time

What made her think it was ok to "twit" Anne about her looks? If Anne should apologize to her, Rachel should apologize first for what she said. And she said it in the third person which is always rude when a person is standing right there. And she managed to jump on all the things Anne hated most about herself. It's too bad Anne disliked her red hair so much. I love red hair.

Rachel was very rude and insulting to Anne and had no right to talk about her that way, especially directly and bluntly to her face like that. I'm glad at least that Marilla told Rachel off for her rudeness, and was understanding to Anne when she told her that her behaviour was inappropriate. I'm also glad that when Anne apologised she was genuine and honest about it (and not forced). While Rachel could have apologised to Anne as well, I suppose she at least acknowledged she was too hard on her and didn't hold a grudge. Sure, I agree she needs to better acknowledge and change her own behaviour, still I suppose this was something decent. Good on Matthew for being the honest and gentle peacemaker in this situation. She's no looker either and is over the hill. No one could just stand there and take that sort of verbal abuse and not respond, especially someone who is portrayed as being super strong spirited like Anne. This is MANY adults, why her character is so important..and the sparing that goes on between her and Anne so vital to the storytelling. Anne changes the norm for most children who fell in line and took it. Anne's responses indicate, keeping children down through harsh and unacceptable treatment was historically changing...children were becoming a powerful force unto themselves and others..Rachel represents the past and the attitudes of patriarchy and religious oppression, while Anne represents the future of children recognizing their worth and standing up for it.

this makes my blood boil.... why should a child apologize for giving back what they got from a sour old bat. it wasn't advice like "your hair is a little messy and should be taken care of better" it was blatant insults that were never apologized for! Anne went through this whole speech while the crone just said "oh you shouldn't mind my insults... they were only what I thought and I wont apologize for them" I hope Anne gets a better caretaker. I didnt even know what Anne of Green Gables was until the rasberry cordial scene popped up in my recommended this is only the 2nd scene ive watched. i'll have to watch more this is a very interesting series.
