In first episode of second season Ann tells to Anne that she doesn't deserve her. I think Anne doesn't deserve Ann. I feel Anne is so cruel to Ann sometimes.

As Angela Steidele says while writing her most recent biography: Anne Lister seduced me and then betrayed me. She also says that she was very passionate, elegant, Smart but she was also a monster with her lovers

Anne is dismissive but Ann is manipulative. I'm not fooled by the doe eyes and soft voice.

Anne sees Ann’s intelligence and capacity for independence and mental health when no one around her did. And through their life together she does all she can to protect her (legally) when her mental health and her estate management takes a turn, including acting fast to travel together in Europe again, stepping away from her own business affairs at Shibden that need her attention, in order to lift Ann’s spirits and not let her family institutionalize and take full legal control of her. From what I had read so far, they seem to have had marriage ups and downs around personality, emotional needs, physical/mental health, etc like all relationships do, and didn’t always treat each other well (and I thought Season 2 showed that really well in their interactions), but they both wanted a partner to see them and admire them for who they were, share life and commit to them, and found it in each other, so in that way, I think they really did deserve each other in the best sense of the word! Anne deserved someone who had the courage deep down to move in and live as companions and admired her traits that even her immediate family and past loves were sometimes embarrassed by, and Ann deserved someone who could take care of her without treating her like an invalid and encourage her in her confidence and her interests like travel and art. I am still hopeful we’ll get a new network onboard for Seasons 3 and 4 after HBO did everyone so dirty, so we can see the portrayal of their later years together.

Love the line: "...I saw for the first time the real you" Walker needs to find the freedom to be who she was meant to be, not what the tribe reduced her to, and Lister is helping guide her back to whom she was meant to be. I love these scenes where there is a mature sharing. I see Lister's love for Walker and even more pronounced I see true caring by Lister. Love after all is just a word; Any good therapist will tell you so. It's all the actions in a relationship that creates a marriage. Lister is carrying the load of estates and a woman who was never allowed to expand into her own womanhood. Gosh, I will miss these two characters. Love Suranne & Sophie together, as said often, their chemistry on screen is stunning.

This scene is so brilliant and well thought out. They bring to the screen real issues that gay people face and how it can break or make them strong. I commend Sally Wainwright for the series and for the actors doing the best on it.

I believe according to the diary, Anne does not appear to cheat on Walker after the marriage. She writes that, on that trip to visit Mariana at Christmas, that she acted with propriety when Mariana visited her room for an hour. It's not clear if the writer just put that in the show for drama. Female Fortune book, that much of the show is based on, has that excerpt about the trip.

Powerful scene between Anne and Ann!! Am I right that we didn’t see a scene at Nicholson’s in this episode? Are we to assume that they were taunted in the store due to the marriage announcement?

Am I only the one who thinks this relationship is quite toxic and manipulative? Mostly on Lister side but both play a part in how destructive it really is. I understand, that giving the time period that this took place. That gay or lesbian relationships, have consequences and harsher repercussions. I still find it quite negative, that this type of drama is trying to romanticising this behaviour as a good thing? I still like to watch the show, but giving some things I've seen online about the show. Saying it's has changed peoples lives or it being positive view of lesbian relationships. Mostly pressing from the BBC. I find that a bit worrying.

@@yawyaw1458 I don’t know. Although I sometimes find it to be overbearing think that it’s very reminiscent of the times. These women have been hurt by everyone around them and therefore in comparison it isn’t as bad as what they’re already facing. They are trying to stop those habits once recognized but ultimately they don’t see a problem unless brought up by one another. We see it as gaslighting and manipulation but they might just see it as healthy communication. And also we can learn what NOT to do with our partners in this situation. 🥰

Newer episodes prove fleeting of drama and story line with more and more sex. It’s like the writers couldn’t come up with good content so they throw in more and more sex scenes. I find this amazing considering that Anne was a real person who wrote a secret one million page diary. Certainly there is content there to be gleaned?

Passion and intimacy are also part of the story. After all the show is a love story between two women, it's never been a show about the success of the coal mine.

Considering Season 1 is 8 episodes, there are very few sex scenes. And, Season 2 has very few. Coal mining gets a lot of screen time. And, politics is a big part of Season 2, as well.
